Another statistic that proves Gretzky is the greater goal-scorer between them. If he took as many shots as Ovechkin, he would have scored 1,114 goals.

The only thing more impressive than Gretzky hitting 1000 points in only 424 points is him hitting his next 1000 points in almost the same number of games (433 games). Fastest and also the 2nd fastest 1000 points in history. Lemieux has the 3rd fastest.

To all the bozos, who you play with matters. In Mario’s first nine years in the league, he only played with two 100 point players, look at who Gretzky played with in Edmonton, are we going to act like that has no bearing or factor on the numbers? Give me a break. Mario was playing with guys nobody has ever heard of until they traded for coffey, they drafted Jagr in 1990, but Mario miss more than half of that season, Mario also missed time during the 9293 year with cancer, missed all of the 94-95 season, so even when Mario had talent around him, he didn’t even play that many games with that talent.imagine putting Mario Lemieux on those Edmonton Oilers teams, are you kidding me? The dude would have 1200 goals and 3500 points

The average performance of league clubs after 2005 (when Ovechkin entered the NHL) is significantly lower than in the 1980s and early 1990s. In the 80s, performance per game ranged from 7 to 8 goals, and the most “fun” season was the 1981/82 championship - 8.03 goals (it was in that year that Gretzky set an all-time record - 92 goals in the regular season). In the first half of the 90s, scoring in the NHL gradually declined (with the exception of the 1992/93 championship), and in the 1996/97 season there was a sharp decline in this indicator - to 5.83 goals per game. In the 2003/04 regular season, the performance dropped to a terrible 5.14 goals. This may be due to increased competition in the NHL. After the collapse of the USSR, many hockey players who played in the Warsaw Pact countries went on to play in the NHL. The best players on the planet are playing in North America right now. During the Gretzky era, there were almost no Europeans in the NHL. In the 1983/84 season. Only 50 foreigners played in the NHL. Ovi came into the league during the dead puck era, playing against bigger, faster goalies who are outfitted like they're working as dog training dummies. The defenders also became very large. Gretzky scored half of his goals against some skinny, dangling fools who jumped 5 meters out of the “frame”, trying to cut the corner, and then fell on the ice. In the 1988-1989 season. In the NHL regular season, 1 field player from the countries of the former USSR played, after the collapse of the USSR in the 1991-1992 season. 24 field players played in the 1993-1994 season. - 63, and in 2003/04. - 71. As can be seen from the numbers, the higher the field players from the countries of the former USSR played, the lower their performance in the NHL. Performance correlates with the number of FSU players playing in the NHL. From 1975 to 1991, USSR clubs played 108 matches with teams of the National Hockey League. During this time, USSR clubs won 58 victories, finished 10 matches in a draw and lost 40 times to NHL representatives. In 1990/91 USSR clubs won against NHL clubs 17 times, lost 8 times and tied 3 times. This indicates the high competitiveness of Soviet hockey players. For example, the results of the teams in which Gretzky played at that time against the USSR teams: 01/04/1980 Edmonton Oilers - Dynamo (Moscow) - 1:4 12/27/1985 Edmonton Oilers - CSKA - 3:6 12/31/1988 Los Angeles Kings - Dynamo (Riga) - 3:5 12/04/1989 Los Angeles Kings - Khimik (Voskresensk) - 3:6 12/03/1990 Los Angeles Kings - Khimik (Voskresensk) - 5:1 Also, the symbolic team of the century included 4 players who played in the USSR championships and 2 players who played in the NHL. The six members of the symbolic team were selected through a vote organized by the IIHF. The election committee included 56 hockey experts from 16 countries in Europe and North America. Symbolic team of the century: Goalkeeper: Vladislav Tretyak (USSR) - 30 votes. Defender: Vyacheslav Fetisov (USSR) - 54 votes. Defender: Börje Salming (Sweden) - 17 votes. Winger: Valery Kharlamov (USSR) - 21 votes. Winger: Sergei Makarov (USSR) - 18 votes. Center forward: Wayne Gretzky (Canada) - 38 votes. Ovechkin played in the NHL against more competition than Gretzky. But you can compare the results of these players at the time when Soviet players began playing in the NHL. Gretzky played 373 games in the NHL from 1993 to 1998 and scored 120 goals (an average of 0.32 goals per game) at the age of 32-36. Ovechkin, aged 32-36 (from 2017 to 2022), played 353 games in the NHL and scored 222 goals (an average of 0.63 goals per game). Gretzky played 721 NHL games from 1988 to 1998 and scored 302 goals (an average of 0.42 goals per game) between the ages of 27 and 36. Ovechkin, aged 27-36 (from 2012 to 2022), played 721 games in the NHL and scored 441 goals (an average of 0.61 goals per game). During these periods, Ovechkin beat Gretzky in the number of goals scored. In addition, regulations contributed to improved performance in the 1980s. Goalkeepers wore narrow pads, less strong helmets and game skates, not goalie skates as they are now. Video replays were introduced in the league only in 1991, when Gretzky had already crossed the equator of his career and stopped scoring goals with automatic bursts. In 1993, the rules for playing with a high stick were changed - it was forbidden to lift it above the crossbar, but previously it was allowed to swing it up to the shoulder. In 1996, when Gretzky was three years away from retiring from the sport, a trapezoid was introduced - a section of ice was outlined where field players were prohibited from making contact with goalkeepers. Ovechkin also beat Gretzky in the number of seasons in which they became the best snipers. Number of seasons in which the player became the best sniper: 1. Alexander Ovechkin - 9 seasons 2. Bobby Hull - 7 seasons 3. Phil Esposito - 6 seasons 4. Wayne Gretzky - 5 seasons 5. Gordie Howe - 5 seasons 6. Maurice Richard - 5 seasons 7. Charlie Conacher - 5 seasons 8. Pavel Bure - 3 seasons 9. Teemu Selanne - 3 seasons 10. Mario Lemieux - 3 seasons 11. Brett Hull - 3 seasons 12. Bill Cook - 3 seasons 13. Babe Dye - 3 seasons Wayne Gretzky never became the best sniper after 1991, that is, when, after the collapse of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact, European players poured into the NHL (the number of Europeans in the NHL increased more than 5 times), and competition in the NHL itself increased! And Gretzky’s performance dropped noticeably. Wayne Gretzky himself said in an interview that it is more difficult to score now than when he was playing (I quote him: “scoring 13 goals now - and this is just my opinion - is much more difficult than scoring 15 goals, as I managed in ’93. "). NHL and WHA leaders in era-adjusted career goals: 1. Alex Ovechkin - 948 2. Gordie Howe - 925 3. Jaromír Jágr - 841 4. Wayne Gretzky - 758 5. Teemu Selänne - 741 6. Brett Hull - 738 7. Jarome Iginla - 706 8. Brendan Shanahan - 672 9. Phil Esposito - 671 10. Maurice Richard - 653 Source: hockey-reference

Gretzky just casually beats Lemieux by 215 points through their first 500 games by scoring 1102 points in those first 500 games. Gretzky’s thinking: “No big deal. A 215 point difference is only a season for me.” Proceeds to score another 1,755 points (more than Lemieux scored in his entire career).

@@Childofbhaal - Yes. But you need to look at their PPG over the same number of games that Lemieux played (915 games). Gretzky destroys him 2.37 PPG to 1.88. Add to that Lemieux only played 170 games past age 31, compared with Gretzky who played about 500 games past age 31. It’s amazing that Gretzky still somehow finished with a higher PPG despite this.

Quite the players in Mitch Marner, Mikko Rantanen and Sebastien Aho. But for the sake of the Original-Argument, for Connor to be a WHOPPING 404!!!! Points over Jack is True INSANITY! Saying that now is obviously true ,but if you take a look at what they had done by the draft year, it would have been total madness to select any of them above Puljujärvi.

@miikaIS obviously there's some hindsight bias, but it seems like they just thought there's no way he'd fall to 4th, so they didn't investigate. I think it's quite telling that a Finnish GM in Columbus passed on him. There's also talk about him not developing well because of the way the Oilers org handled him (and they do tend to be atrocious at talent development up until the last 3 years or so). But yeah, the GM had said they were looking to trade down during that draft to begin with, which, in hindsight, would have been better. Finally, a friend of mine is a Finnish hockey player who now plays in Australia. He played against Puliujarvi when they were 16 and said he was way better than everyone else at that age, but was fairly dull in terms of intelligence. He worked really hard, but didn't pick things up quickly, depending more on his athleticism being superior to the other players. That doesn't translate well to the NHL, and it seems like most Finns knew this. The Oilers could have traded down to pick up McAvoy, kept Hall, traded Eberle for a decent second pairing defenseman and gone for DeBrincat in the second round. Again, perfect world and all that.
@miikaIS
@miikaIS 10 ай бұрын
@15748109 I am not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that hindsight makes it impossible to see it anymore the same way it was back at the draft. Also, remember that it is not just purely athletic matters that decide draft choices. As we saw this year with Michov. The business side of example comes to play. Imagine which is more marketable to investors, U-20 top scorer and gold medalist or defender that had won nothing and might be really good in 4-6 years? I am also from Finland and definitely agree with the assesment of Puljujärvi hockey intelligence. It was never at the level of a top scorer. He does have hockey IQ as shown by his advanced stats, but not that of a top scorer. Which was his status when coming to the draft.
@EarlofSedgewick
@EarlofSedgewick 10 ай бұрын
@@miikaIS fair enough. I get that business decisions come into it, but that's where a GM like Yzerman is critical. He understands that most fans want to see a winning team, that excited fans buy jerseys only once if the team doesn't go anywhere. I really don't understand how Edmonton has managed to put such a weak team around their two all-stars for nearly 10 years, and the Puliujarvi pick seems indicative of the mess, especially after the Yakupov disaster.
