Route: The Harrogate Line
- Between York and Poppleton Stations
Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barriers crossing with 2nd generation Obstacle Detection (MCB-OD2)
Location: Millfield Lane, Nether Poppleton
A selection of Harrogate Line services passing this level crossing near an industrial estate in the outskirts of York, just beside part of the city's outer ring road. This level crossing is the first in the country to have a second-generation obstacle detection system installed at it (mainly like a renewed version of the obstacle detection system currently seen at various locations). However, this was still in its trial period at the time of filming, and it had to be monitored by a crossing attendant who manually confirmed the crossing is clear before allowing releases on the signals reading over it. Since filming, it is apparent that the system is fully working independently, and another independent example has also since cropped up at Duffryn Level Crossing near Llanelli and Gowerton.
The level crossing detection systems (LIDARS etc.) are mounted on thick supporting masts and are overlooking the level crossing, rather than being mounted on the trackside within the level crossing, and it's not believed that the covers are designed to open like those on the LIDAR's on the older design do. Large, grey, rectangular reflectors are also located on the backs of each entry side wigwag, and these (along-side triangular reflectors fitted on the thick supporting masts) allow the systems to scan the whole level crossing whilst in operation and delay it being fully closed and cleared for trains until clear if it were to be obstructed. Like at other obstacle detection system crossings, telephones connected to the supervising signalling centre are also provided for drivers of large/slow vehicles to use.
The level crossing in its current form opened in August 2022, also when the previous automatic half barrier installation was decommissioned in favour of it. All four barriers are full-length and there are now twice as many alarms as before. This seems kind-of over-kill for a quiet road like this especially when considered there wasn't too much of a problem having the previous half-barrier crossing here; this road became very quiet at times. On one side of the road, other than potentially for purposes of clear detection, the level crossing is unnecessarily wide with most of the footway space taken up by anti-trespass guide.
