I found a very good deal for a Kity 636 Jointer/Planer combination on eBay, to replace my current one. It has a wider cutter head (25 cm), a VERY powerful motor and an overall much better build quality.

You will have great times with that machine. They were made in France, most of them were made on the simple idea to use one single motor to power many machines. They were also manufacturing bigger machines with their own motor. I own a 20 yo table saw of this brand (a Kity 619) and a planer/jointer Kity 637. Both a awesome machine very reliable. I bought my saw for 400€ with 6 blades (up to 270/300mm blades just work fine), a rear outfeed table, a side table to rip up to 1000m wide sheets, and a cross cut sled with a 1200mm bar. The planer is quite similar, the tables are 260mm wide, 1200mm long, and can joint up to 250mm. I add a digital scale on it to ease reading the thickness I'm aiming for. Enjoy.

Look on Ebay to fing in UK very low priced jointer blades, I found a pair of 260mm knives for around 20€. A french e shop may also help you to find parts for these old ladies..

I liked the way you refurbished and older tool to be used again. That's how I done my woodworking shop, a tablesaw , bandsaw, and jointer all refurbished. It's a great way to save money and have good working equipment. I like doing that as much as the woodworking.

You're quite an entertainer. I love your humor. You are intelligent, innovative, and more of a woodworker than I will ever be. Thank you for all of it. Here in the USA, you need to buy two machines to do the work of your Kity. Oh there are probably equivalents here but way out of the price range of weekend warriors like me. I like your Kity and what you've done with it to make it functional. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like you defiantly got your moneys worth there, mind you the way you take machines apart then put them back together again, i don't think it matters what condition the machine is in. I think the way you make things to add on to machines to make them safer, or better than before is Brilliant. I don't know how you do it, Well Done. Barry (ENG)

The motor looks a lot like it is actually a re-purposed direct drive table saw motor (note the extra flat construction & how the mounting flange goes away to the side and rear - that's to increase the effective cut depth - and all standard industrial motors have a nameplate). Probably leaning more towards the 4 kW (5 1/2 HP) mark. Very nice setup!

Marius, Your designs and builds are quite uniquely intuitive and fun to watch. The extend of your knowledge and abilities is quite impressive and far above your age. Your knowledge of mechanical engineering and industrial design is really remarkable. You must be a mechanical engineer. Impressive videos and productions... Kudos! cool video I have the same machine, mine also has a horizontal drill/panel saw and molder that you can activate by changing belts (they are separate machines mounted on a table with only one motor). She works really great, it's nice to see that there are more people who have this brand. I believe it’s a brand from the Scheppach group.
@MariusHornberger
@MariusHornberger 7 жыл бұрын
How well does the molder perform? That's the only other machine that could be useful in my shop (once it's big enough to allow for that)
@bartblankers1
@bartblankers1 7 жыл бұрын
It performs pretty well for such small one because it has a 1.5hp motor(3 HP in your case) the downside is that is only has a 15mm (or 16mm I can check that for you) but with the right spacing rings I use molders that need a shaft size up to 30mm. it has a really nice adjusting system for the molder height.one other great feature is that is has a slot in the table to use the sled from a table saw, so you can cut counter profiled tenons. If you want to I can take some pictures during the weekend, or if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

That's a great looking machine. I would never have the confidence to drop 400 euro on a secondhand purchase off ebay in case it turned out to be a dud. I have the modern equivalent built in china but it still works well. Try not to lift it by the tables though. I made a set of handles for mine with two long wooden 'bars' that were screwed into the main body where the tables attach. You can then do the equivalent lift but without stressing the tables.

Hello! The company that made this was bought by Scheppah. I think everyone has seen what "good quality" tools makes this company! Also in Germany another company, Elektra Bekum, that made stuff like this planner was bought by Metabo and the same happend. I dont think you could buy machines like this at hobby level. Now sheet metal and plastic is cheaper , lighter and easier to produce. And also the chinese only have to change the color or the stickers on them.

Your “new” planer/jointer appears very much reminiscent of the old-and discontinued-Swiss Inca tools. They were well engineered. There appears to some subtle and not so subtle differences. After some for 40 years I sold the Inca tools and bought a Felder 531 Pro. Excellent combo tool, but there are times that I miss the Inca tools. Well made, light and easy to move around the shop-and the country.

Looking up Kity 636 I found mention of it as a current model in a 1992 issue of American Woodworker. Your machine's styling looks older to me than that, but looks on industrial grade machines aren't a big concern to manufacturers, so don't give that much weight. Nice machine, sweet build. Looks sharp.

I have one of these in a single phase configuration - I think it is 1.1kW motor. It did not have all the dust collection parts but I made my own. It is on its original stand. It is a great machine and I will implement some of your mods to improve my one.

I just found a set of 4 Kity machines on the original table an are thinking about buying an extra motor so i don't have to change belts >> Do you think 1.1 kw is big enough for the planer or should i go for a bigger one ? ( the machine is not mounted yet so i have no idea )
@lightningstrike20111
@lightningstrike20111 7 жыл бұрын
Eric Koster i find my planner works well with the 1ph motor that is of that rating i think. It depends on the amount of material you are removing at a time which is a cross section of thickness x width of piece. I've run beech and cherry through mine that were the whole opening width taking about 0.2mm at a time but anymore would slow the motor. Running spruce however i could take nearer half a mil at a time at full width. Having not had a machine previous I've nothing to compare it to.

Honest to god, I'm almost 50 years old and I'm so stupidly happy with this thing I practically want to sleep with it at night. Your old jointer/planer looked like something out of a Little Tykes toy set, but this newer one looks like a great option if someone is short on space! Good width, too (25 cm = 10")! I think an 8" is the biggest I've seen with a benchtop model before I saw this one! In fact, this is probably as good of a benchtop model as I've seen...most of the other ones I've seen look like buyer's traps: cheap to buy but ultimately a waste of money.

I had a similar machine when I first started woodworking. It was an 8" (200 mm) jointer planer by Jet. Your's looks to be of higher quality than mine, but the dust collection set was always EXTREMELY annoying and I replaced it after a year. I am a bit surprised to hear you bought that machine for 400 E.... I bought a Makita 2030N for 400 USD. Much bigger machine with a 5' jointer bed. Are tools in Europe just a lot more expensive than the US?

weird, I've just bought the exact same Kity 636 combo P/T of ebay. I'm in the process of looking for a 2 pole single phase 2hp motor. The cutter head subs at 7000 rpm, the pulley on the cutter is 50mm therefore you need a 150mmm pulley on the motor.

My motor has 2800rpm and a 120mm pulley. That speed work good. If you can, get a even more powerful motor, you won't regret.

I have the opportunity to buy this old jointer with the matching table saw for about 300€. Would you say that’s a good deal?

You are running out of room! I have trouble working in a one car garage, you seem to have half that space and accomplish a lot!
