I put the word out, searched for 8 months, went to a lot of auctions and farm sales, and was rewarded by finding my beloved 275 pound Peter Wright. I think it's worth a thorough search!

Thanks for another great video. I have been looking for an old anvil for a couple years and finally decided I would purchase a new cheaper anvil just to get started. My wife and I stopped at a consignment store a couple days ago and she pointed out that they had a few anvils against the wall. Well, I walked out the proud owner of a 100 lb Colombia anvil that is pretty good shape for just $3 a lb! Keep looking. They are out there. The other two were in extremely bad shape.

I love my cheap amazon anvil because it's my first anvil and it's great to learn and mess up on. Someday when I start to sell products I want to save up for a old anvil. Knowing it was used for potentially 100s of years by many other people is awesome.

Yup I bought a nc anvil new. Cast steel. You can beat it with a hammer and it doesn’t dent. However had to do some sanding to make it how I like it. Can’t complain. Worth it to me!

I bought a early 1900s Peter Wright. It has love marks I like to call them. It still works. I want to buy a new 150+ pounder. Anvil prices are outrageous for used right now.

Wonderful comparison and very useful insight, as always thank you for your time. One quick question, I have noticed that the face height of the colonial patter and the Pro Grade anvils were noticeably higher than the Accacio, is it because the Accacio is permanently mounted and the others loose or perhaps something else?

How hard is it to replace the steel plate on the old anvils? I have an old one like the one in the video only double the size and want to put a new steel plate on it.

My current anvil is a 70lb Vulcan that I paid a hundred bucks for, the one before was a Peter Wright that I spent something like $150 for, the one before that was one of those harbor freight anvils that I paid about $60 for, I don't regret any of those purchases. Anvils are a complicated subject

I looked hard for 3 years, and on and off for 10. I finally just bought a new Emerson. It has no flaws except what i hammer into it, and it is every bit as good as anything I've ever used. The anvil's capabilities far exceed mine.

I started with a 55lb Harbor Freight anvil. Looked for months to find an anvil online. I live in Staten Island New York. No luck. I went with a 100lb TFS anvil. I bought it through Centaur Forge and got it delivered for $537.00. I am very happy with it. Granted I'm 66 years old and this is a hobby to me. But my opinion is that new is better unless you are stuck on the nostalgia of an old anvil.

🎶🎶 I like big anvils I can not deny🎶🎶 🎶🎶Them big old anvil sure catch my eye🎶🎶 Oh oohh I probably just got out in time out for that. Sorry Ms Jess and Roy, I couldn't resist. Yes I've been bad. Love to see the anvil videos. I agree, if you can't find one used that won't take a ton of work to be in good shape but a new one. There's not much difference in price these days. Ok I'll go to the corner now... 🙏 God bless y'all now and guide y'all along the way. Crawford out ⚒️🧙‍♂️

If i could ask your opinion i have some choices: old used round edged swayed face 100-150lb for $200 or new chinese steel 88 lb for $300... My next options go up due to shipping.

The Amazon link takes you to a COLIBROX anvil, not an Acciaio 66lb anvil? COLIBROX appears to build the HF anvils.

It comes down to price and availability for most new smiths. Bargains are still available for old anvils (and even good new), but it requires a diligent search (or a barrel of luck). New anvils are available, and can be delivered right to your door. So, for most of us, the new anvil is the easier option. It's always a balance between price, quality, and time (or availability). Finding the perfect anvil is worthy of stories, and there are lots of those. But, as I have heard with most of these stories, the best way to find a good anvil is to already have a great anvil in your shop...

My only qualification for expressing an opinion is my grandfather was a blacksmith which made him a practical man. While I tend to believe the older anvils were made with more care and could have been better when new than new anvils available today I agree with you about wear, use and abuse. That’s why I would much prefer a new low budget anvil over an experienced anvil.

I'll tell you that it's gotten even worse. I was in an junk shop in Winder GA. Small little shop in the middle if nowhere. The CHEAPEST old anvil their was about 65lbs and $600 and it was not in great shape. Needed resurfacing bad. All the way up to $1600. Yea. Can grab a brand new Atlas of the same weight for $450 and its nearly flawless.

I'd also mention this is all true but may changed based on your location. Germany, Belgium ... we got a LOT of anvils floating around, at about half the prices you mention. Also, I do'nt like forged wrought iron with hard steel face anvils; too prone to faillure, unless they have really thick faceplates. I prefer cast tool steel anvils, and there are plenty of those floating around here.

I got crazy lucky with my anvil. I picked up a ~100lb Wilkinson x Dudley in pristine condition for $150 about a month ago. Couldn't have opened my wallet any faster if I'd tried.

Hey, you don't open your wallet too fast or the seller might think that they have made a mistake with the price. This advice is null and void if there are other potential buyers present, then it is First In, Best Dressed.

Oh no, I know. I just couldn't bring myself to haggle with the guy when it was already way lower than I know he could have gotten. He just seemed happy to know it was going to be used. I'm also planning on making something for him and his wife, but he doesn't know that yet.
