when non singers sing i listen. following sumner as he sang from the beginning in a lonely place, ceremony, procession, cries and whispers, temptation , age of consent, and on and on to bad lieutenant, i never questioned his singing talent . he has always been a fabulous singer .i like danny kirwan's voice , too.

All in all this was a good cover of the song musically especially , i wont criticize the singing, because the vocals are good, but he just doesn't have the dark creepy croon Ian had that made , and gave Joy Division their unique feel that we are all accustomed to, but in the same sense we must remember this is a tribute, not a replacement.

@escobesco This is right around when they got back together and decided to start doing Joy Division songs again. They do a version of "Atmosphere" that I don't particularly like, but I might end up posting it along with the rest of the session.

Didn't they reunite for a Commonwealth Games ceremony om 1998? I was right there as a student in Manchester, but missed it. The regret!

actually this song was made essentially by Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner

Fair comment, and I do enjoy the cold industrial sound that Martin Hannett created with New Order and Joy Division so that's probably why I find this a bit...umm....warm. I still think it's a great version all the same. I'll listen to it again now and report back.

Barneys voice always spoke to me more personally than Ian Curtis. Don't get me wrong , JD were the blueprint but New Orders creativity and musical impact far eclipsed that of a band that with Curtis at the helm was unfortunately doomed from the start. Fortunately, the talent they held was so strong that JD produced an amazing body of work before his death ultimately could have derailed them permanently. The focus of direction they found when Gillian joined provided the balance and stability their restless natures required to channel their blueprint for life changing and affirming music. And this version nails it to the wall.

I think it's largely unfair to compare NO to JD because we only have the small amount that JD got to do and NO's music was very different except for maybe Movement which comparable to JD's music

That's rather odd considering Peel Sessions were essentially live demos. Not to mention that detractors of Martin Hannett felt that he over-produced. If anything, this only sounds cleaner because it was done 20 years after the original.
@Fraser431712 жыл бұрын
I really like this but It's much too studio polished methinks. The JD versions sounds really gritty and underproduced and is all the better for it. I'd love to hear a New Order version recorded in the studio before they commited it to the God of Remix.
@barbconch12 жыл бұрын
I really don't think Ian was much of a singer either, especially live...i know I will catch hell from JD devotees but the band took it to another level after Ian...we'll never know how it would have been w/him but NO made much better albums thabn JD

Fantastic version. One Joy Divisions great songs

It's alright but certainly a tad too perky and peppy for my taste, and for this particular song that's so despairing at its core...maybe Shadowplay or Wilderness would've fit better for such a nineties-y reworking

This probably another reason for Hooky quitting. I think he wanted NO to do what the Light is doing but Bernard's voice is to high pitched for most JD tunes. NO does Transmission quite well but BS could not do an entire JD lp

Bernard shouldn't have to mimic Ian, he's on a different scale entirely...
