My name is Allera Padgett, a 24 year old kindergarten teacher in New Orleans, LA. I am the owner of Allera Padgett and Company and founder of Girls with a Vision nonprofit organization. I have a passion for helping our youth reach their full potential. I felt the need to ensure my kindergartners are set for success in all aspects of life. Our classroom economy not only teaches the value of money but also responsibility. My students get paid, pay bills and then have the opportunity to spend their extra money at our class store. I will continue to provide high quality lessons for my students.

I love what you are doing here!!! The enthusiasm and creativity you have put into your teaching is something that I have always felt goes far undervalued in this country. My teaching days began with my sister and I playing a game similar to this one (my game was limited to a grocery store)... I love how you’re using the children’s desks as the area they “rent”. I’m 54yrs old, and I still remember the names of the teachers who played an important role in my life. I think it can be said with confidence that your name and certainly your lessons will be remembered by any student lucky enough to pass through your classroom.💖 love from DE 🎃💙

I love this idea. This teacher is awesome. Maybe teaching them this early will stick with them. I hope the parents continue it at home. The child that said he was about to be broke cracked me up.

"I'm about to be broke!" That was a sure laugh for me. I hope there will be another episode about balancing the checkbook and managing the credit cards. Perhaps that's for first year students?

Excellent, Miss Allera. I was taught about finances by my mom and teachers in high school home ec. classes. These values will go such a long way with these youngsters, and they'll teach their parents and siblings which is even more important. They will have lifelong success because of you. I do hope this program is spread throughout the grades to build on the concepts so that kids can learn as they mature and are then ready for life when they graduate. These are the lessons that can be used in reading, math, spelling, critical thinking to help graduate young people ready to are for themselves in life and not be scammed or taken advantage of. I admire people like you who are able to help kids learn the skills they really need to take care of themselves and move ahead in life. Deborah

Too cute! Luv it and please post some more. I wanna see who balances their account and whose in the negative, what other expenses they incurred and so forth. Yeah, I know I’m asking a lot but kids will get the hang of it and enjoy doing it as well.

Only bummer is that cash will be obsolete by the time these kiddos hit college. Also teaching them how to comprehend the "virtual money" of a credit card would be super helpful...maybe once they hit elementary school. But this teacher has hit on a really important issue.

The tangible aspect of paper money will always be important for early learning. When they learn later on about virtual currency, the concepts they first learned by handling the play money and watching as they "earned" it and paid "bills" will stick with them.

Baby steps, baby steps. She has to build the basic foundation for concepts later.

@zuzuspetals9281 I agree. It's just that I am awesome with cash.....yet I get into trouble with credit card (virtual money) even though I am an old adult. I think I was fishing for ways to get ME to fully stay aware of my invisible money.😅.....and stay constantly cognizant of concepts like compound interest. But, yes, maybe not a good idea to start THAT in kindergarten. 😮

This is awesome.. I wish I was taught this in school.. I had to learn financial literacy by myself.. I hope she doesn’t end up fired or something else because she’s trying to teach kids how to take care of their money and not let the snakes take advantage of them..
