In this series, I'm doing a part tutorial, part vlog, part timelapse of my 1989 Toyota mk1 MR2 AW11 restoration.
Work in this video:
Painting Duplicolor paint shop (Performance Red)
Sanding
Compound (Meguiars 105)
Polish (Meguiars 205)
Buffing
Wax (Meguiars Ultimate Wax)
Reassembling

If you want a recap of the progress and more shots of the paint, watch my previous video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j813iraAsr-9mI0.html Again, this is probably going to be the last MR2 Project episode in a while since I'm just taking a break. But other videos are still coming in the mean time. On top of that, the engine rebuild series is probably going to be the next big step for the car and I'll most likely start it early this fall. My plan is to make a little set and turn that series into a slightly higher production thing than these casual vlogs. It should be doable since an engine rebuild mainly stays in one place and has a set start and end to it vs the car.

This paint is beautiful. I previously owned an 88' MR2 in white with the t-top, a/c and power everything, but my gray Toyota alloy wheels were the exact same as my 87' Corolla FX16 GT-S. I upgraded the exterior by having the mirrors painted white, purchasing the 89' supercharged MR2 smooth door handles (having them painted white) and purchasing the 89' MR2 supercharged rear spoiler with the LEDs (having it painted white with the factory silver stripe), because I'm my opinion, they looked better than the black door handles and the single light under the rear spoiler when I was single. I really enjoyed it the time I had it. Everything changed after I married my wife and had daughters. I went from driving awesome 3 pedal 5 speed manual transmission sports cars to driving a 2 pedal 8 passenger minivan. I did not see that coming.

Dude this whole series was the most information about having a project car I've ever got in my life. AND LIKE NOT BORING OR ANYTHING AND GREAT. I hope you keep making videos and series like this to help get people into building their projects!

I never comment on youtube, but for this, i just felt i had too and i just wanted to say i love the videos. I just finished all the ones on the mr2, and they are easily my favorite car videos i have seen on youtube. Just keep up the amazing work you do. Also, i love the retro style you go for. it's my favorite, too, and I never realized i need to watch someone who loves the retro style like me. So, hopefully you will be putting out more videos. Side note i also might be getting my own mr2 soon

Something for next time would be to flat the clear coat and spray a final wet coat over the top for a really smooth, flat finish with minimal orange peel.

A fine paint bush can be used to touch up those pock marks. With just the right amount of paint on you will fill up the hole without it dripping or showing the rough edge. Then a local sand and buff and it will be close to invisible. Same technique as what you will eventually use for stone chips. An air brush will wont fill a hole.

Yeah I considered brushing it on too but wasn’t sure if it’d leave obvious brush strokes. But they are so small and sanding would make sense to smooth it out. May give it a try at some point down the road.

It’s looking great! And, as a person who’s also going to be rebuilding a spare engine in the future, I’m excited to see how the engine rebuild is gonna go

I've found nail polish works for very minor scratches on cars that I can't be bothered to fix with a proper paint job.

This is extremely odd, correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like an mgb in your profile picture. Funny enough, my garage currently contains a 1970 green mgb and my 1988 sc mr2 ( it is also red).

Its a common failure point. Clean everything up and use superglue to bond the insert back in the handle. The mating faces have matching serrations so it works out to be a reliable repair.
