Hi Roland, thank you for your comment. We are launching the kit on February 15th and will be available for purchase on Microchip direct (www.microchipdirect.com/dev-tools/MPFS-DISCO-KIT?allDevTools=true) and all other authorized distribution channels.

Does Libero support a free license for the PolarFire SoC, just like Vivado is free for most Zynq 7000 and Ultrascale+, or Quartus for Cyclone V SoCs? Can the bitstream be loaded from dynamically, e.g. from kernel-space, or even user-space? Is bare-metal supported on the application cores?

Hi there, thanks for your question! Libero SoC does offer a free license for certain PolarFire SoC devices. Specifically, for the MPFS025, MPFS095, MPFS160 (non 'S' Devices) and MPFS250T-FCG1152E, MPFS250T-FCVG484E (Kit devices), you can obtain a Silver license at no cost, which includes support for mixed language simulation, programming, and debug functions for one year. You can access this free license by going to the web for the free license download. www.microsemi.com/document-portal/doc_view/137168-libero-license-selector-guide. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your question! The PolarFire SoC family has been in full production for several years. The Discovery Kit uses production silicon. Let us know if you have further questions about this. (And we aren't sure why your previous question disappeared!)

Thank you for the question. The development tools used for PolarFire FPGA/SoC are Libero SoC ( www.microchip.com/en-us/products/fpgas-and-plds/fpga-and-soc-design-tools/fpga/libero-software-later-versions ) and SoftConsole ( www.microchip.com/en-us/products/fpgas-and-plds/fpga-and-soc-design-tools/soc-fpga/softconsole ), both which run on Windows or Linux. If you mean the DSP FIR Filter demo GUI, yes it is Windows only.

93K logic elements, 292 Math blocks, at 50 MHz. (Smallest FPGA in the SoC series) 4-core SiFive U54: RV64GC single-issue in-order five-stage pipeline at 625 MHz. *Not a five-core CPU!* The fifth RISC-V core is a management core. Seeing such a low-power CPU which supports only RV64GC (it is from 2017) is a bit of a disappointment IMHO.

Hi there, thanks for your comment! The PolarFire FPGA platform was launched in 2017, with PolarFire SoC in 2019. The Discovery kit aims to bring commercially available, programmable, and affordable RISC-V development platform to the mainstream. You are correct, the processing complex is a Quad-Core RISC-V SoC (SiFive's U54) capable of running a combination of Linux, RTOS or BareMetal in SMP and AMP modes. A really ambitious programmer could probably get Quake 2 or 3 to run on this?

Running Quake 2 or 3 on Microchip’s PolarFire SoC FPGA could be possible given its 64-bit RISC-V cores and Linux support, but it'd require significant optimization and adaptation. A cool challenge for any ambitious programmer!

@@MicrochipTechnology Quake 2 & 3 ran on Pentium 2s. We played at lunch in the software lab at my job. They didn't even require 64Bit architectures or GPUs.

Hi Arthur - The toolchain you're referring to is the Libero® SoC PolarFire Design Suite, which is designed for Microchip’s PolarFire FPGAs. This suite includes Synopsys Synplify Pro synthesis and Mentor Graphics ModelSim simulation, along with tools for constraints management and debugging. The PolarFire kit includes a free Libero Silver license which can be downloaded from the Microchip website, where you can also generate the license. Hope this helps!
