BlackSeaRC presents a fully detailed look at the brand new Rastar McLaren MCL36 F1 1:12 scale radio-controlled car. This video includes:
- Overview of packaging
- Unboxing
- Sponsor logo DIY decals
- RC handset overview
- Close-up look at all details of the car
- Look at the real F1 car on which this scale RC model is based, including interesting tech data
- Battery installation and power-up
- Functional testing (throttle and steering)
- On-road (outdoor) test drive
- Display with McLaren P1 GTR
- Review summary with good and bad points
- Alternative Rastar F1 RC cars
This MCL36 is specifically based on the McLaren Racing Team F1 car that competed in the 2022 Formula 1 racing season. It is an officially licensed model. The papaya orange and blue fluorescent livery with sponsor logos is similar to that used for the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. In this race, McLaren finished in third place, their best result of the 2022 season. The car carries the number 4 and driver Lando Norris is represented in the cockpit (landonorris.com/). The sister car was the number 3 driven by Daniel Ricciardo.
This is a superb 1:12 scale RC model full of realistic details. Manufactured from injection-moulded plastic parts, this model features carbon fibre effect finish on the components and highly detailed front wing, suspension components, undertray, monocoque structure, cockpit with driver figure and sculptured rear wing. Tyres are hard rubber and represent the Pirelli P Zero yellow-banded C3 medium compound slick racing tyre. The model comes with some factory painted graphics but is also provided with a set of 39 DIY self-adhesive decals with sponsor logos.
This RC car comes with a 2.4GHz handset with push button controls for throttle and steering. It has an in-built antenna. The controls are non-proportional.
The part number of this product is 99800. I purchased mine from here:
www.detmir.ru/product/index/i...
A smaller 1:18 scale version is also available (Rastar part number 93300).

Hi BlackseaRC. I just want to say I really appreciate you for being very kind to your viewers. I have read a lot of comments here and some of them one may feel as “rude” but you always respond to them in a very professional and calm manner. For that alone I have subscribed. But other than that you are very informative and people like me can really learn a lot from you so hope to see more videos of this type of hobby from you. And also yes, as one commenter said before, you have really nice English. Very admirable.

Thank you for leaving your kind comment. It is always nice to have some positive feedback because it is often difficult to tell what viewers like and what they don't like. The statistics show that I have viewers from many parts of the world and sometimes the comments are translated. I know from experience that sometimes this can lead to misinterpretation and the translation can change the meaning of words slightly. I always try to reply to every comment. However, I am also aware that sometimes people are writing comments just to be controversial or deliberately confrontational. Usually, it relates to my choice of music or to say that toy grade products are not proper RC's and are 'garbage'. In these cases, there may still be something to learn and even if not, they have at least given me a free comment that has helped promote the video. Anyway, in the world of KZfaq, there is no point to take offence as it is impossible to please everyone. With regard to my content, you will see that I have a mix of 'toy-grade' and 'hobby-grade' RC vehicles, but the general theme is that I like products with a high level of scale realism. Of course, I appreciate that someone who buys a 500 USD RC car will likely not be a fan of a 50 USD RC toy car. On the other hand, lots of people collect the cheaper models and they are always more popular on my channel than the more expensive ones. Yes, if I had the choice I would love to have a collection of just high-grade RC vehicles but I try to balance it out. I am sure you will find some interesting videos on my channel, whatever niche of RC vehicles you are into. Let me know what is your area of interest? Off-road or on-road? What scale? Toy or hobby-grade? My dream is to design and build my own RC vehicle under the BlackSeaRC brand. I have the concept in my head, it is just a matter of trying to make it happen...

Thanks for watching and leaving your comment. All the Rastar RC cars are fully licensed and the level of detail is always very impressive. I know they are only toy grade but there are lots of serious Rastar collectors who like them for the scale realism. I think soon we will reach the point where 2.4GHz fully proportional electronics are so cheap that they can be integrated into products like this. Already, brands such as WPL are using this equipment at a similar price level. It would make the cars much easier and more enjoyable to drive. I have seen a few conversions done on these types of cars and I might try myself if I can find some parts at a reasonable price.

I agree with you, the angle that the wheels turn on Rastar cars is never very much. I think this is to give them greater stability so they do not overturn when steering (the tyres always grip well). The emphasis on Rastar cars is usually good scale-realism and great detailing, rather than performance. Do you drive inside or outside? If you are interested in RC vehicles and want another in the future, then a machine with fully proportional steering and throttle controls would give a nicer driving experience.

I like the McLaren because of the bright colour scheme. For example, there is also a new Ferrari but in plain red it is less interesting than the McLaren. Also, it doesn't come with a driver and that looks a little strange to drive a RC car with a cockpit that is empty. The stickers on the McLaren were quite a challenge though. I wish they had factory painted all the sponsor logos as the finish is better.

As always, nice video. I recently got both the Ferrari and McLaren versions in both sizes (1/12 & 1/18). These will definitely be fun to upgrade. Just did a full hobby grade modification to the 1/18 Ferrari. Not too fast (12mph) but a lot more fun. Hopefully I can make a video soon. I modified the older versions (Both sizes) of the F138. I have videos of those if interested.

Thanks for watching again. Your conversion project sounds very interesting! I always thought the larger scale F1 model would be ideal for a conversion as it has more space in the chassis area but also it has a chance to run smoother due to the slightly larger size. I don't know how Rastar claims this model has independent suspension though, or maybe the older F138 had some kind of movement there? I will check your videos.

Interesting review, good detail of the model. In fact, the detailing is very similar to the F1 1/18 scale model, but 1/12 has a plus - it's a pilot and a larger size. The quality of detail F1 rc car in 1/18 scale is also good and even comparable to diecast F1 bBurago models. If you are interested, you can see the review and comparison on the Auto Check channel.

You are right, the smaller scale F1 cars do have a huge amount of detail. With the normal car models at 1:24 scale, I think they lose a bit of detail compared with the 1:14 scale versions. They also have painted windows and no interior detail so in that respect you get a better deal with the F1 models. I think the Rastar injection moulded plastic models are perfectly acceptable as display models. In my mind the quality of the plastic moulding is not inferior to die cast metal models. The graphics are also nicely done but I am not a fan of the self-applied decals.

My view is this. Rastar wanted the buyer to feel as if they had helped to 'build' the car and for this they gave them do-it-yourself stickers. But in reality, many buyers are children or their parents who will not attach the stickers properly. Some of them are so tiny you can hardly see them. The area of adhesive is so miniscule, if you even touch the sticky surface the adhesion is lost. Also, even if you are a pro-modeler, the stickers hide the carbon fibre effect and the thickness/colour match makes them a little too conspicuous in places. On curved surfaces, the edges of the stickers can easily lift. I think Rastar should provide the car with the livery complete. This should be factory painted, like the base colours and sponsor logos that are already on the car, not stickers. That would give a much better overall result in my opinion.

I have a friend who has a long, freshly paved driveway with a teardrop roundabout (incredibly smooth). I was considering getting either one of each or a pair all three Rastar 1:12 cars (F1-75, MCL36, AMG W11 EQ) to race with my friends with a homemade circuit. Do you think these cars would work for that? How much does the type of batteries used effect speed? Is there signal interference with more than two cars?
@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC Жыл бұрын
Hello there! It sounds like an interesting idea. The 2.4GHz frequency will allow multiple cars to operate at the same time without signal interference. Just be sure to power up one car at a time so it can bind with the handset. One thing to note is that these Rastar cars do not have proportional controls so you might have a few crashes when driving together in a confined space. You could always consider the 1:18 scale versions of these cars which still have a great amount of detail despite being slightly smaller. It would also be cheaper as well if you are buying a set of cars. All the cars use AA type batteries so the speed difference between brands will be negligible. The only real difference will be that a more expensive battery with higher mAh rating will offer a longer run time. You might have seen other videos on KZfaq where people modify these cars to make them faster and drive better. This can be done if you are prepared to make modifications yourself but it won't be cheap.

@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC Жыл бұрын
I applied them by hand but I think tweezers would have been helpful due to the very small size of some of the decals. Furthermore, when you touch the back of them with your fingers, some of the adhesion can be lost, especially with the smallest decals.

@freddy1641 Жыл бұрын
@@BlackSeaRC oh I see, would you consider tweezers to be useful for the bigger decals?
@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC Жыл бұрын
@@freddy1641 All the decals are pre-cut so you just need to wipe the surface where you are applying them, peel off the sticker and press it down well in the centre and work out towards the edges (to prevent air bubbles). Press firmly, especially along all the edges. I don't think you need tweezers for the larger decals. I recommend to really think carefully about the position of each decal before applying it because it is not always easy to get them correctly aligned and once applied you don't get a second chance. It will probably take you 30-60 minutes to carefully fit the full set of decals.

@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC 8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately not. It is a pity that a model of a Formula 1 car doesn't have greater performance but Rastar typically uses the same electrical components in each car. This means that the 1:12 and 1:14 scale products drive in a similar way. Most people like Rastar products for their scale realism rather than their driving performance. @BlackSeaRC

@@SSKARTING I don't have any of the 1:18 scale Rastar models but I do have one of the 1:24 scale models. This seems pretty fast for its size. Although it is smaller and lighter it only uses 3x 'AA' batteries, whereas the larger scale cars use 5x 'AA' batteries. Therefore, the speed you can expect from all scales of vehicles is similar and falls in the range of 4-6mph. For indoor use, the smaller scale vehicles turn nicely but if you have space, I prefer the larger scales as they provide interior detail.

At least some of the graphics are factory painted but adding 39 decals by hand was a bit of a challenge. Some of them were just a few millimetres long and really it was very hard to stick them properly. Also, the thickness of the decal is then visible on the surface of the body. The larger decals also masked the carbon fibre weave effect so I would have definitely just preferred Rastar to do everything in the factory. Unfortunately, all their F1 cars are like this. Why they did it I am not sure because you have to be pretty skilled to stick them neatly in the right places. What did you reckon to the speed? I hoped it would be faster. I guess they fit the same motor and gearing as the 1:14 scale cars but because this one is larger it is slightly slower and has a bigger turning circle. I am really tempted to try a hobby grade conversion of this model to see how fast I could make it go but I'm not sure I can justify the cost of all the parts.

The real MCL36 has a top speed of 223mph or 359kph. So my reasoning is that the 1:12 scale RC model should be able to achieve a speed of 18mph or 30kph to be realistic in terms of performance. In reality the top speed is only about 10kph, one third of what it should be...

Yes, it is a lovely model, I just don't know why Rastar decided to include some stickers as DIY. Maybe they thought it all adds to the experience but it is not exactly like building a kit is it! Perhaps water slide transfers would have worked better, like those commonly used in plastic model kits. The problem is that the surface is not really sticker friendly and some of them are so tiny that the area of the bonding surface is virtually nothing at all. By the time you have peeled them off and attempted to place them, half the stickiness has already been lost. I like the fact that this model has been released quite quickly. @@markieh04 Maybe Rastar used DIY decals because they wanted you to feel as if you'd helped to construct the car yourself (a bit like building a kit but on a simpler level). Unfortunately, the decals are just a pain to apply because some of them are ridiculously tiny and even worse, they don't adhere very well. I was super careful when applying mine yet some don't line up very well, others are starting to peel off and some of the orange colours have faded in the light. If they were factory printed, they would have been much more successful. This is one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to buy any more F1 cars, although I think if a group of people had them it would be great fun racing together. The temptation is there to buy them all and convert to hobby grade so we could have an F1 race but that would be divorce territory 😅😅! It would be cool though 😎....

@@markieh04 No repost but I did add a link on the 'Community' tab to celebrate Lando's first F1 win so that might have given the video some extra promotion. The problem is that modifying Rastar cars is an expensive business. There are already competitor products available with fully proportional controls at a comparable price. If you buy a new motor, ESC, steering servo, transmitter, receiver, battery, LED lighting, etc you have spent a considerable amount of money. However, if it was there supplied by the manufacturer, the cost would only be a little bit more than it is now. Having said that, I want to modify a Rastar car in the near future just for my own fun.

@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC Жыл бұрын
The steering sounds awful, I agree. The steering uses a motor that drives a set of gears. There is nothing in particular that you would think makes so much noise but they are all like that at 1:12 and 1:14 scale. A standard micro servo with fully integrated gears could easily do the same job with very little noise. The main drive motor is quite noisy as well.

Can you mod these to make them faster?!?
@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC 6 ай бұрын
Yes, there are a number of possibilities to make them faster but it will be a "home-made" build as official bolt-on parts are not available. Typically, the first thing to do is to replace the electronics with basic "hobby grade" electronics. This gives the required fully proportional control that enables you to handle extra speed. An upgraded motor and battery pack are the main changes after this. However, you will need to make modifications to enable the motor and battery to fit. This means cutting away some of the plastic chassis parts. Finally, the steering can also be upgraded but this again needs modifications to the vehicle structure. Quite a few people have done these modifications but it will need a lot of trial and error. Typically, you can get a top speed of 20-30mph with a small brushless motor (retaining the original gearing). Anything more and the car becomes unstable. For examples of modifications, see the following channels: @AndWeRollin and @2005silver

@@darrenadrian2218 I haven't seen that motor used for such an application. I don't think it would be compatible as the input voltage is only 2.4 to 3.0V. Usually, these cars are modified to use a motor for use with a small 7.4V LiPo battery pack. This is a commonly used standard for small RC vehicles.

You are right, the car is not especially fast (about 8-10kph top speed) and doesn't have proportional throttle or steering controls. However, a lot of people buy Rastar products because they are fully licensed and have superb scale realism, so you can use them as a nice display model when not driving them. It would be good to have better performance though.

@BlackSeaRC Жыл бұрын
Usually, Rastar road cars are produced in 1:14 and 1:24 scale. With these models the larger cars have a far greater amount of detail (including the interior and sometimes opening doors) so I always recommend the larger scale. However, with the F1 cars the difference between the two versions is much less noticeable. If you want the best scale realism, then the larger car is still the better choice. Similarly, if you will be driving outside, the 1:12 version is ideal as it will have greater stability. If you are going to drive the car indoors only, then the 1:18 scale version would probably be better.

This RC car seems like a perfect choice for a hobby grade conversion with fully proportional controls, small brushless motor and LiPo battery. I would love to see how it performed with such an upgrade but with the cost of all the parts, I'm not sure whether I can justify it at the moment. Maybe I will try if there is enough interest in undertaking such a project.

It tends to take quite a while from the time a real car gets released to the point where we see the scale model. This is due to the licensing, model design, production set-up and then worldwide distribution. This process can easily take 3-4 years so we were lucky to get the MCL36 so quickly.

Modern F1 cars are actually quite a bit larger than road cars. I tried to find the exact dimensions of the MCL36 to check the scale but didn't find anything where McLaren published the dimensional data. I did however find the 2022 regulations that state the maximum allowable width of the front and rear wings, plus importantly the maximum overall length. Comparing these dimensions with those I measured on the model it was fairly close to 1:12 scale. For example, the 2022 regulations allowed a maximum length of 5.5 metres. The model measures approximately 47cm long so that equates to a scale of 1:11.7. In the video I line up the F1 car with the P1 GTR (quoted as 1:14 scale) and there is not such a noticeable size difference.

12:30 not very quick?! 2.2 seconds to full speed is VERY FAST. Do you expect it to take of for air for crying out loud?! It aint a plane its a motor car and its just a toy. Even a real car like a subaru impreza takes 6.2 seconds to go from 0-60 and thats not top speed.

I am just comparing this RC car with other products in this price range. Plus, 10kph at 1:12 scale is equivalent to a maximum of 120kph at full scale. This is just one third of the real car's top speed of 359kph. That isn't really being fair on this model though as it isn't designed to be a speed machine, the emphasis is more on scale realism.

@@feropont141 Scale realism and high performance are key selling points for RC cars nowadays. Rastar wouldn't pay a licensing fee to the original manufacturer if people didn't care about the real car. Don't make the mistake of thinking these products are just "toys". There are many serious enthusiasts who collect these RC cars and there are also lots of people who modify these cars to get better performance. Just look at the up-and-coming RC brands from China who are now offering budget products offering top speeds in excess of 50mph. That level of performance doesn't suit a Rastar product but there is huge demand nonetheless.

You kinda have nice english which is rare now. Whats your favorite books? Also good reply. Performance is subjective since for some performance is simply speed and acceleration and thats what you are adamant about, lets not overshadow the other important aspects of performance such as handling, steering, and torque. Whilst fast speed is fun, it quickly brings the car well beyond the drivers view distance thus making the car uncontrollable until it is fetched. It is similar to hitting the golf ball far into the distance and then having to go fetch it it becomes a different game. Thats why there is an efficaciousness for slower rc cars since the driver of it has much more time until it goes beyond view distance and better control over it in smaller environments. Perhaps rastar cars are more grand than toys as you have led one to believe. They are one of a kind.

@@feropont141 You make some interesting points and you may be surprised to learn that actually, I am in agreement with most of them. I am an automotive design engineer by profession, working on specialist high-performance vehicles for customers worldwide. I read and write mostly technical literature and documents. Contrary to what you may think, I believe that speed for the sake of it is not good. There are many RC vehicle manufacturers making claims for ridiculous speeds. In effect, the vehicles are uncontrollable missiles on wheels. I like Rastar models for their scale realism but one of the greatest improvements they could introduce would be fully-proportional control for the throttle and steering. This is in fact being provided by some other manufacturers at prices very close to those of Rastar products. Controllability and maneuverability are far more important for enjoyment than outright top speed in my opinion. Having said that, a small improvement in the performance of these Rastar cars would be welcomed.

If you look at a typical RC car, it is not unreasonable to expect to get performance at least equivalent to the scale. So it would be nice to get a top speed around 1:12 of the real one. Of course, the price is significantly less than this proportion of the real McLaren, so I can't really complain too much!
