Unboxing new plants! It's the time of year to start thinking about which cold hardy tropical plants should make their way into the garden. Here I am unboxing a couple of Musa sikkimensis 'red tiger' and talking about their care in colder climates. Everything I go over applies to the 'red tiger' musa sikkimensis 'bengal tiger' and the regular Musa sikkimensis as well. There are a lot of variegated bananas out there, but this is the only one I've had luck with in zone 6. Out of all the cold hardy banana trees, this one is my absolute favorite. Even when the variegation isn't strong, they still have beautiful red tones to the undersides of the foliage and nice thick trunks/pseudostems. The variegation on these banana trees is not as profound or stable as on other types like the Musa zebrina, Musa zebrina 'rojo' or even the Musa ae ae / Musa florida, however, they get bigger and can take the cold!

Hey Jeff. Great to see the fab update. My experience with these bananas is the same as yours. The foliage rarely looks anywhere near as good as the pictures on the internet. I find they grow quicker than my basjoo but I'm a little more cautious with removing the winter protection as earlier as the basjoo to try to protecting the pseudostem height. Mine are the Bengal tiger version apparently. Your plants look great. I hope the foliage is maintained as it grows bigger. Will provide a beautiful contrast to your basjoo. I plant them in a clump with my basjoo and lasiocarpa to get the height and colour contrast. Mine are about 6ft tall. They've had 2 winters now👍. Take it easy. Enjoy the week

I'm glad you said that! I forgot to mention to remove their protection more cautiously and that sometimes they wake up a few weeks later than the basjoos do.

I’ve grown ‘Red Tiger’ in zone 7a for 5 years now, and it always comes back, usually a week or two sooner than my Basjoo. Last winter I never got around to mulching it for the winter, and with no protection and a colder than normal winter, it still came back strong.

I saw these on a field trip to a local community college and I've loved them ever since. Almost got a cutting( a pup), but the lady didn't have her knife on her. Dang! They always remind me of a plant from Jurassic Park, after a Velociraptor attack, of course. XD

Loved the video. I'm in 7B and lost 3 of my Musa Basjoo in the severe cold. They were mulched heavily, but this was some crazy cold and snow we had here. Had them for over 3 years in the ground. 1 is left and to my happy surprise is sending out growth. Can't wait to see your new trees in the ground!

I have to say, I really look forward to your videos..!! THERE ALWAYS JAM PACKED WITH KNOWLEDGE & SO HELPFUL!! but unlike "all the rest" of the plant people.. Your always so colorful, uplifting, & happy.. with of course.. just a touch of Sass!! Without fail it always brings a smile to my face.. - Thank You! Brett "The Bird Guy" ----> P.S. I've been successful growing Musa Bajoo outdoors in Fairfield County Connecticut for 3 years now..!! They just keep getting larger and larger and they were sprouting Pup's last summer!! I found a AWESOME MICRO CLIMATE on the South side of the house in the garden bed that is in-between the foundation for the house and a cement sidewalk.. It's refreshing to see tropical plants growing outside of my home during the summer in CT. (Thanks Again!)

Wow! Thank you so much, Brett! It is so awesome seeing those giant leaves in the summer time. It totally changes the entire vibe of the garden. I like feeling like I'm somewhere else when I come home, the bananas make that difference. Nice to have the simple plants with bold impacts that set things apart from a regular garden. 😊

In my experience in the UK the Sikkimensis 'red tiger' only has around 3-4 leaves with varigation and then as the leaves get older it slowly fades out and becomes more green, they also prefer a good amount of sunlight to get the variegated red/green leaves, I had one in a more shady location and it just produced green leaves but only changed once I moved it into a more sunny location🌱 Good luck with yours as they look like good healthy Sikkimensis 'tigers' 🤞🌴

You scored yourself some really cute banana pups.. I can’t wait to see them grow. Unfortunately I think the cold hardy banana I planted last year bit the dust. I couldn’t find any mulch in the fall to mulch them with. Even though we had a mild winter in Mi. I think it’s a goner☹️ I think I’m done with tropicals, I can’t keep them alive. I don’t have a dedicated indoor space for them and my Brugmansia got spider mites really really bad. I guess I will just have to enjoy your tropicals and the dedication you provide for them. Thank you Jeff, I’ll try to keep on growing, but sometimes its a struggle💚🙃

Oh Jeff, you'd have been so upset at my doctors office this morning. There were ponytail palms that had been planted in the parking lot (I would guess they were planted when the office was built 10 years ago) and, I dunno, I guess they didn't like the look or something. So these 5 plants that were probably 12-15 feet tall with a caudex like 3-4 feet, pulled out and thrown into a chipper. They replaced them with Foxtail palms, which I like, but why did the other plants have to go in a chipper? The waste in Florida landscapes is unreal. I know, it has nothing to do with the video, I just needed to vent.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 жыл бұрын
Urgh! That makes my heart sad! Especially since they are so dang easy to lift and transplant! Well, easy if you have heavy machinery. Would think they'd want to save them and sell them. What a waste!
@michaelmccarthy4077
@michaelmccarthy4077 3 жыл бұрын
@@TropicalPlantParty that's just it, they used a small backhoe to pull them out, it would have been nothing to tie them to the hoe and lift them onto the flatbed that had the palms (or just roll them on for crying out loud). And they wouldn't have needed to bring a chipper. Makes no sense.

@Srt _ typically bananas are bought as divisions or as small plants. I get them from my local garden centers since they are always pretty regularly available. However I live in a subtropical region, so in cooler climates you may have to order them online.

MUSA BAJOO! Just plant it up against/near the South Facing foundation of your home & cut down & mulch heavily.. (like 2 feet of hay, fallen leaves etc..) can even throw a black tarp over the mulch & then uncover and dig them out in the spring.. (you won't see Bananas at first.. but with some warm sun and spring rain.. you'll see them sprouting out of the soil!) - atleast that's what I've found to be the case.. What do you think Jeff?

@@brettbirdguy Agreed. Musa basjoo is awesome. I like to chop their frosted old growth at the bottom of the pile as “greens” and make a compost pile.I’ve found that’ll help with actually producing heat.

Hi Veronica! Identifying can be really difficult sometimes unless they have some strong characteristics like variegation, rounded or long-thin leaves etc. There are a lot of bananas that look identical. If you have instagram you can post pics and tag me in them, I can take a guess and share it with some others to see what they think.
