Doc runs the new GK2 Mclane reel mower for the first time. He talks about the features and shows the different models. The new Low Cut and GK2 reel mowers are new for 2024. He realizes that he needs to change his plans for cutting the lawns.

I bought my McClain about 35 or 40 years ago. The Honda engine still starts on the first pull. Always a pleasure to mow. I completely agree with Doc.

I bought the 25” Mclane Winter Special a couple of months ago for $1,699 and mentioned “Doc” and got the free grass catcher 😁 Thanks Doc! Btw, I’m really enjoying mowing with the Mclane. First reel mower. Hybrid Bermuda in Dallas.

Doc??? I received from my Dad my first reel mower in 1973 in Phoenix, Sears or Craftsman model it spoiled me. My Mom on the other hand gave me a bait caster reel and it was the same effect on me. I became a Reel Man from that day forward, Can't wait to receive the last reel mower of my life and I don't even have to convince the wife. Life's been a true Blessing. Thanks for inspiring are youth on keeping a reel lawn.

One important note for anyone considering one of these Mclane machines: The handle doesn't extend as high as you might expect. I got one in 2022 (not sure if the updated model has changed at all) and at 6'3", 6'5" in your football programs haha, I am right at the max without having to bend over awkwardly to push it in manual mode. Don't get me wrong, I love mine and it has taken my lawn to the next level, but it does start to hurt the back a bit when you have to get into all of the hard to reach places. They're also built very solid and out of high quality steel so they're not light. If you have some spots where you would have to push it up a hill manually make sure you are comfortable pushing "reel" weight around and that you have some good boots or cleats for traction.

I definitely prefer my new Rolux. Tried Cal, Allett, Trucut etc. Plenty of tall guys with em now too with no issues.

i have a push reel that i use .i think its a 6 blade.when i was a kid my dad had a jacobsen reel an that was a nice mower too.these mclains look awesome an ive looked at one at a local shop .ive always used a reel an i love watching you mow beautiful lawns with yours.thanks for all the videos an tips theyve been helpful even for me in the pacific northwest.

I had a McLane when i first started my golf course lawn addiction. They are a good beginner mower two must know issues, they're bolted together not welded the frame can easily get tweeked and then you fight to get a even cut. They're adjustments are not ment for regular adjustment. I finally gave up on the constant adjustments and searched for a low hour greens mower. I purchased a used 512hr John Deere E-cut with groomer and brush for $1200 with shipping.

Just so you know Doc I own a Husqvarna auto mower 430X and does a great job. It gives me more time with my other yard work that needs to be maintained. 👍

I looked at an industrial robot mower and it's really tempting because it would save me so much time. I would have to hire an install because so many trees and a pond to avoid.

You’re lucky to have only gone through one belt. Seems like the part I replace the most 😂 On my 20” McLane I’ve had to replace a lot more than I feel I should have to due to what I feel is regular wear and tear from metal on metal (drive levers/system wore out), but I love it bc I can fix it all easily myself. Trying to find the right time to pull the trigger on an upgraded model.

Hi Doc, quick question for the pgf fertilizer 16-4-8, if we were suppose to use 4-1-2 ratio should the 18 lb package if labeled for 5000 sq ft be used for 5000*4 sq ft

Hey Doc need your opinion on whether it's a good idea/bad idea or beneficial or not to overseed my Bermuda this season. I have common Bermuda (not sod/not seed) this is a natural Bermudagrass that grows here everywhere her in middle Tennessee. I start out after scalping mowing at 3/4th inch which is as low as my rotary mower will go and by the end of summer it's mowed at 1" 3/4. I purchased common Bermuda seed from Hancock seed a few years ago for a few bare spots and it matched perfectly. My lawn is the best in the subdivision but I'm wondering if an overseed would a positive benefit. Thanks.

Hey, Doc. Brilliant channel, I've seen a bunch of your vids and my back yard looks great thanks to you. Question - Do you have any thoughts on manual push reel mowers? My yard is a small, typical suburban plot. Firing up my trusty Toro gas mower is fine but I wonder if a reel mower would just be better, overall. Any recommendations? Thank you.

Once the grass gets thick... they just won't handle it. We did some vids years ago and they struggle, BUT... they will cut it. Not sure what is out there now.

Question - Doc, would using a 10-blade reel compared to using a 7-blade reel not increase the number of times that you would need to mow your lawn? In other words instead of mowing 2-days per week I would probably be mowing 3 or more days per week? How does this mower handle inclines?

Hello Doc, I took your advice, we had put Bermuda sod down last year at my house in New Caney Texas. I also decided to purchase the Mclane 25" reel mower and waiting for it to arrive. I was curious, how long do the reels last before needing to send it out for sharpening? I will use your method of back lapping once a year. The 80 and 120 grit pastes, where do you purchase those, are they linked in your back lapping video? I will go back and look. I appreciate all of your advice and videos demonstrating what you do for your lawns. I am excited to try for the same results, thanks again.

Guy at Mclane dist talked to a lady that had a mclane for 20 years and never sharpened the blades. I would say once a year is all I do now. Amazon for the grits

Doc, when you do your hose-off and sun dry, does your roller ever rust/seize up? Mine does, so I used to spray a bit of WD40, but got worried it might get on the grass so I’ve stopped.

Make sure you do it in the HOT sun. it dries in 10 minutes and no rust. Maybe hit it with a little white lithium spray if you're worried, but a little surface rust is no issue.

Robot mowers - "I don't know why." Because maintaining 28k sq ft at 1/2" with a reel just got to be too much, lol. Chomper mows at 1/2" every day of the week. Now I'll have time to actually verticut a couple of times a year.

Doc, what causes a Mclane to be so loud when the reel is engaged? Too tight against bed knife? I had to wear hearing protection because my ears were ringing after using it for aboit an hour.

Sounds like an alignment issue. Try backing off the reel from the bedknife to start with and see what that does.

Sounds like it already needs a back lap with the clicking noise. Might be a burr or a nick on the blade,bed knife.

Hello Doc, I’ve been following you since 2019 and I don’t always have the funds to make my lawn as beautiful as yours, but I’m really trying a lot harder this year. I got my soil test back, but it just does not make sense to me is there anyway possible you could take a look at them And give me some advice? I do plan on aerating and top dressing and leveling this year. I’m just trying to find a good company. I can trust in my area. Also I don’t think I could ever afford a real mower, but I am part of receiving emails from you if I’m not mistaken, and I’m crossing my fingers for winning that new mower from McLane.

I had one of those McLean real mowers when I first started out, and I literally drove the thing into the ground within about two years The chain drive system that rubs against the turf, constantly causes mature chain, failure, and leaves grease and oil from the chain on the turf. you can’t change the bed knife as it is a permanent fixture. you have to push the mower to transport it if you don’t, the real runs as you propel the mower forward, which is not recommended for a real mower with the proper bed knife to real clearance. For the money, you’re better off to buy a used Toro or Jake.

YOU THINK NO GREASE PLUGS IS GOOD ,DOC??! And here I’ve followed you for many many years because I thought you was a “NON COMPANY MAN”. No grease nipples only means NO MAINTENANCE TO WEAR OUT BARRINGS AND BUSHINGS!!! And I’m sry. Yes. MANY THINGS CAN WEAR OUT NOW !!! Less grease nipples are not BETTER!

They have sealed ball bearings on the "pork chop" arms. Been years and never an issue. If it does wear out after 10 years... the cost to replace them is about $60

@@HowTowithDoc I’ve watched you for yrs Doc. My family will verify what a fan I am. I’ve fixed more than a few yards listening to you to the T,& your advice. So ty. Really. Don’t take any of this wrong. And it does have exceptions to it & a personal preference in a few cases . But a big majority it’s about longevity & maintaining stuff to last literally a life time. So you are right about that 10 yr vs cost replacement. So yeah It’s not a big deal. I remember you complaining about having all of the grease plugs on your GR in a couple of vids back at the old home. lol. So I do understand where you’re coming from . But when it comes to this subject? I’m a pro. A ol part time Diesel mechanic,Equipment operator, on equipment from everything between 994 cat loaders ,to 777 trucks ,Volvos, Excavators you can park your truck in the bucket of ( & the little skid steer you got? I got a Cat skid steer like it ) Lol. For 37 yrs all together. And I can tell you. A non serviceable bearings is not better . But not really worse either. I like you just come from a time when that stuff was common, (everything being serviceable ) & I like knowing I have an effect to make it last & know it . Lol. And I hate seeing it disappearing lol mostly I guess. But practically & mechanically. They all get moisture in them from the air & temp changes (you know what humidity & Metal can be like in these conditions) If they hold the grease,and are moved regularly,it’s not a real potential issue. But setting through a winter & season changes . I wld just prefer to be able to service the bearings. And I loved (and remembered) you showing all of the grease plugs on these Mclanes. (And even complaining about having to do it. Lol.) The “REAL JOHN DEERS” and “REAL CLUB CADETS” from their actual dealer sales ,…I’m sure you know how these names are leased & different nowadays. I’ve heard you touch on this subject before. Guys who knows ,knows these things . lol They are a difference in a Lowe’s JD,&, a Real JD . Things like a 1/4” steal box decks, is one difference. But the other main one is. Grease plugs. The licensed out models won’t have them & the actual company made ones will have them for the most part. Some companies are going to “sealed bearings” because people just won’t grease them . And these companies knows this. Lol. And in those cases a non serviceable is better for those people. lol. Because a Serviceable bearing will dry up if not greased. But not for those who services theirs , it’s not an issue . So I do understand what they are doing & why. And it makes sense. But a serviceable bearing has better life’s and I mean many decades more if serviced . So I just like having that option. Because them spindle changes can be a bitch. lol. As you probably know. So it’s not an issue of one is bad. It’s that one is good & other is better. Depending on the owner. lol I think they should offer both machines with & without. It would only mean their orders would be smaller for each . But probably not a big cost issue. This would be my ultimate feelings on it. It just surprised me way back then & knowing the type of guy you are ol military guy that likes to keep things logically going a certain way & last . I’ve noticed Club Cadet has grease plugs on everything but their spindle bearings. But in this case where moisture will be limited ,I wld say it’s not that big of a deal to be a non serviceable bearing (all are sealed ,some has metal seals with rubber edges & some are open & has outer seals on the bearing seat . But all are sealed) the point is to be able to get grease to them to push water & dust out & obviously lube them . I just like having a serviceable bearing. Because I am like you. I LIKE TO BE ABLE TO WORK ON MY STUFF. Btw. I love that you push by American . Although it is a relative statement. Glad you touched base with me on this. I didn’t mean it to be so long. I’m just thorough by nature. lol. I’m sure you understand. But ,I like ya style Doc , I think you and I would be friends in another world if happenstance wld’ve permitted . lol. We are a lot alike in a bunch of ways in how we think , I believe. I’m just up above you in KY btw. So yeah…I like you,was a hunter too. Stopped for similar reasons as you too.
