@@STL-sl7zv Capitalism isn't reality. That's the problem. They all have you believing in this made up system and you all jump through hoops trying to make sense of this pimp game. Then, many of you look at the people trying to tell everyone this system is bull as the crazy ones. If I was on board with this lie; I would agree with you but they make this crap up as they go along. One minute it's backed by gold; the next minute oil, deficits, consumer spending and debt. Now, they've introduced cryptocurrency, which wasn't a word just 12 years ago. I agree with much of Marx's critique of capitalism because most of what he predicted has come into fruition. That said; I think we are way passed that philosophy and need a new intellectual paradigm to trade goods and services. I don't know what that is but this system isn't it and you know it. Cheney exposed the game a while ago when he said 'deficits don't matter.' It's all a religion now and that's why I say it's a talking point. The system is the system; if we're debating on the premise you're talking about; I might be inclined to agree with you. But, I'm just operating in a system I don't believe in until I can figure something out, which may be never. As of now; I just try my best to find time to understand the game; which may only lead me right back to this circular debate.

The internet and media will continue to destroy regional accents as the U.S. economy becomes more centralized. There's no longer any need to form your own community accent like in the 30s. Communication works better when words are pronounced and easily understood. I predict the standard American accent will even begin to seep into other English speaking countries such as the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, South Africa and even Australia. American movies are internationally watched and highly influential.

@Danny Archer This just one sign of the fact that there are tiny (but sometimes loud) minority of "libtards" -as you say- and there's a majority of normal, sane liberals, leftists, anti-authoritarians, moderates, etc. Actually, it's pretty much the same with the moderate conservatives who kind of have to hide in the 'age of trump'. And in the current, minoritarian, non-representative American political system, the extreme "libtard"/"contard" fringes have disproportionate say in things. But the fact that when it comes to actual politics and policies in America the race is between the central right and the far right (by international standards) tells a lot.

@@JJones-rk6cy You really think you came up with a new argument that no one considered before, don't you? What a genius. Problematic users diminished more than even the best estimates predicted. Addiction was turned from a legal problem into a health problem. 20 years ago I was very young and I thought this decision was wrong. That the solution was more repression and harsher penalties. I'm happy that I was mistaken. It worked really well. But it was an experience. No one knew what would happen. From the moment we actually see it working (in several countries), you have to be stupid to stick to the strategy that doesn't work. It's a shame we lost the will to go further and legalize and regulate drugs the same way we do tobacco/alcohol. But we lost that will because things are fine. When things are fine people are resistent to change...

@jjjmail No. He doesn't. If he did, he wouldn't be contradicting the Neoclassical-Keynesian synthesis (or, in less obnoxious terms, the consensus of economists right now). Large deficit spending is *exactly* what you're supposed to do during recessions. The Fed's expansion of the money supply is needed to counteract the global deflationary pressures arising from an aging global population and financial markets awash in a glut of cash. He might have made a lot of money in the stock market, but that doesn't make him informed in the slightest on macroeconomics, and certainly not more than the experts at the Fed. Now, to be clear, I don't mean to imply that there should be no criticism of the Fed or the govt.'s spending policy, it just annoys me when it's done shallowly for comedy but presented as if the commentator knows what he's talking about (i.e. I wouldn't have the same problem if he was doing standup at a comedy club or even just taking himself less seriously here).

True....but the drug dealers often kill those that work for them selling the drugs if money or drugs come up missing. The big dealers also lace drugs with other more lethal drugs that cause users to die. Rehab has been proven over and over not to work....the majority go back to using. Majority of the homeless in the US are that way because of drug use....they can’t and don’t want to work....all they want to do is take drugs all the time. I used to be married to a drug dealer...so I’ve seen first hand how people on drugs only care and think about the drugs....about when they are going to get their next fix. People will commit crimes just so they can get drugs....they steal anything they can get their hands on and they will kill innocent people if they get in their way. My ex-husband has been to rehab 3 times by the way....and each time he came out and continued to use and sell drugs. The only sure way to stay off drugs is to never start them in the first place. And also unfortunately in the US....they wouldn’t be tough on drugs if they decriminalized them....they would push to be soft and not do anything. They would say you can’t force people into rehab or something like that.

I am Portuguese. As Bill said, we decriminalised all drug use 10 years ago (but dealing is still a crime and gets you in jail). We don’t get drug tourism and have the lowest drug use in Western Europe (never mind comparing with the US). We have hardly anyone in hospital because of drugs, as Bill pointed out. It works and it’s common sense. It’s only an illogical visceral knee-jerk reaction by many that puts a break on implementing this everywhere.

At the end of WWII, US Army General George C. Marshall sold an idea to begin revitalizing Germany and the rest of western Europe. The Marshall Plan rebuilt the economically devastated countries and kept them from becoming part of the Soviet sphere of influence. Here in the Mid-Ohio River Valley region of West Virginia, we have done reasonably well off economically, as have the Kanawha River Valley. The rest of the State has not done so well, and the coal fields have taken it in the shorts, and the same can be said of eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio. King Coal and inept politicians have not been doing well for the State. Bill Maher made a quick, cheap joke about West Virginia, and I personally wish it was funny, but as much as I admire President Biden, I'm not feeling any vibes about my State. I realize he doesn't owe us anything politically. Sadly, we're a blue state turned red, and my vote for him didn't count for a whole heckuva lot. Yet after all, he IS the President of all of us, and we need him to do something good, especially here. If he can, just maybe we can cease being the butt of all the bad jokes Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas rightfully deserve instead.
