Hi everyone! Thanks for the lovely comments, we love reading them all! I just wanted to let you know that these videos are several months behind real time - as they always are on KZfaq. However, there is some big stuff happening in real time at the moment. It'll all become clear on KZfaq eventually, but if you'd like to be up to date AND support these videos at the same time, that's what Patreon is for! Every Tuesday I post a real time article or video on Patreon about what we're doing. It's usually a lot more conversational and candid than what I post on KZfaq... and like I said, there's big stuff happening in real time right now! Patreons can sign up for as little as $2 a month, and it's what keeps this channel going. And don't worry, if you can't support but still enjoy our videos, the Friday episodes on KZfaq will always be free! www.patreon.com/user?u=13249792 Thanks for everything, we really appreciate everyone who watches! To join you on your adventure every week reassures my belief in humanity and proves there are wonderful people out there to share life with. Thanks again for the medicine.

Maya, you have been a big inspiration to my 11 year old daughter, after watching every video you guys have uploaded, Mace has decided she wants to document our up and coming sail to the Bahamas. She is quite good with a camera and she has spent hour up hour studying how to edit and upload to KZfaq and she knows her way around a sailboat quite well, she has sailed with us since she was two years old. So it looks like my private life is going public. Welcome to Sailing SV WINDSONG......

Happy to see you honoring Capt. Jacques Cousteau with your red head covers. I was born and raised in Eritrea and had the chance to meet Jacques Cousteau and his Calypso in 1967 at a young age in Massawa when he was exploring the Red Sea. My parents build a sailing boat during the early 1950s in Vienna, Austria and where planing to sail up to the Kiribati Archipel in the Pacific. When my mother got pregnant with me they stopped sailing in Eritrea to give birth to me. They where planing to stay only for some months - but destiny made it 28 Years. I just retired as an Eye Surgeon, own a Trawler Yacht that is currently stationed in Port Sidney, BC, Canada and hope to join the ocean as soon as Covid Restrictions permit to travel. I also have a Cousteau red head cover that I use to protect my head from weather and sunshine. For his team the red head cover was important to easily identify captain Cousteau on deck during operations at sea...... Hope to meet you some day on the ocean... Cheers, be safe and happy

Locks are often cram full but there is no reason at all to fear that. Just go slow. In fact, not being at the wall is very relaxed as you can just tie fast to the other boats and don't have to worry about giving the lines slack.

Chop can be worse than swell and I know folks that developed a tolerance for motion and some that worsened over time. No one really knows what they will feel as far as motion on the water without much time on the water in different conditions. I have been out in very heavy seas as a rescue crew member in the Coast Guard and was seldom frightened but even us salty fellas get a bit worried at times. Hang in there and there is no shame in getting frightened. My best trick was always to get busy so I was not focused on the motion or frozen with fear. Great art in your production guys. I live inland now and watch videos about sailing. your beautiful work reminds me of the sea.

Hello Magic Carpet! As usual...you have one of the best channels around for true sailing and regional discoveries! I have sailed years in the Quebec Saint Lawrence difficult weather and found (with my daughter and wife and a few others) that handing over the helm to a weary would be sailor gave them lots of confidence. Somehow, a vibrating rudder while keeping a course with some 25 degrees of heel....always calms the spirit and chases the scares away! Better to do then to watch! Anyhow...keep up the marvelous works Cheers

You must be new to her. She always speaks poetically and lyrically with the vocabulary of a long time and passionate lover of language. She knows words she can't use most of the time without hindering communication. When she brings out a new term and explains it the joy in her voice transcends our quotidian existence. She's not just a poet, she's poetic and romantic to her soul, with her life, in her being. So she's not a _younger_ person. She's ageless. She's eternal. She's filled with the goddess. Other than that, she's a'ight;)

Ah, you did visit Hindeloopen! I had not seen it since the late eighties. My wife and I spent many many trips going to Hindeloopen shopping for their painted furniture and accessories. There is a real story there. The Bootsma family and many others turn out incredible finely painted items carrying on a tradition from long ago started by fisherman iced into their villages during the winters. A wonderful place.

Great video as are all I have seen of Magic Carpet, Aladino looked like a kid in a sweetshop looking at the boats in De Valk :) Brings back memories of a rough day out in Hindeloopen, it was a choice I made to give my wife an introduction to boats and cruising on the canals in Friesland. Short chop of about 1/2meter crossing the Morra meer on our way to Hindeloopen and my wife handled it much better than she does the rolling motion of the ferries across the North Sea. If you get a chance to go to Sneek there is a great Sheepvaart Museum there that is well worth the viewing, my wife and I spent far too much time in there and want to go back and see more of it.

This is the first KZfaq channel I have become a Patron of. I’m not 100% sure why but there was just something that struck me. I think it is Maya’s story telling. She has found her calling. I also like that they are both very nerdy and very unashamed about it. To the point of actually being cool. Being from Vancouver, I can’t wait for the new boat to launch so I can see videos of my home waters!

Nice videos of Stavoren and Hindeloopen. There is plenty to do in both towns to spend a few days in each. The Whisky Bar in Stavoren is always worth a visit if it is still there. The owner was a Scot who was building his own boat to sail back to Scotland with. From UK perspective, Hindeloopen would be classed as a premier, luxury, 5 star marina as it has a swimming pool, tennis court, childrens farm with animals and is right next to the town (which has an amazing Mexican Restaurant!). The company "ALUBOOT" in the marina also builds boats (leisure and KNRM rescue boats) and is always worth looking through the doors to see what the are building. I was there many years ago though so things may have changed but I did love the time we spent there. As a kid the Puffin also caught my eye and is always a boat I look at as a dream boat!

I learnt to sail on small dinghys and progressed from there, if your friend tries that route I am sure she will take to it, even after being thrown into the briney once in a while. The only problem with the northern latitudes is the cold, that is a big problem for me. Having said that, I am an old man now, tell your friend she will think back on life at some point and the memories she would have while sailing would always bring a smile to her face. Me, I was seaman and was paid to go around the world, to exotic places and chase lovely young women, what a life for a teenager in the 1960s. I also learned my trade into the bargain!

We went into Ijsselmeer in 2019 at Lemmer. Viking is a 12 meter motor yacht at 12 tons. Once we cleared the break water the waves hits us pretty hard, about 2 meters in height. The boat was fine the passengers uncomfortable, progress slow. What turned me around was concern about dirt in the fuel tank clogging the filters, which would be unpleasant to change in that sea. The boat was pretty new to us at that point so we turned around.

Just wondering: in situations like when entering Hindeloopen, why don't you drop the main and then (re)set (a bit of) the forsail and just roll that one in again really close before entering the marina itself? (Basically as you would do it when sailing without an engine)

We stayed there several times but in the old harbour that wasn't so crowded early in the season. You got some beautiful footage of the harbour and the village, it has so much history. It's such a pretty place... really looking forward to going back there before heading north this spring/summer :)

Thank you to all four for this wonderful day. Very interested in Annika's first sailing experiences. France should be inspired by the Netherlands for everything related to the reception of boats because the ports in France are saturated. The lists for getting a pontoon are endless. How do you manage, in your ports, to have a place all year round? Take good care of yourself.
