One problem with your video is that is not a standard JLF actuator. What you have in your hand is a Kowal oversized actuator and you can tell because the sides are not tapered.

I'll wait until OTTO DIY kits are released for this new model. JLF with that kit is heaven.
@TheLivingArcade
@TheLivingArcade 11 ай бұрын
I'm curious to see if they update the OTTO kits at all alongside the JLX. I'd say the OTTO is superior and it replaces all the components that the JLX has beefed up anyways so I see no need to switch out to the new JLX in your case even if they update the OTTO kits. Unless they do something way different.

How do you feel about the throw? Same as JLF? (it should be shorter to compensate the short engage but...)
@TheLivingArcade
@TheLivingArcade 4 ай бұрын
it feels exactly the same. I do like the feel of that new actuator. It's a more solid material and it's smoother running along the gate. Not worth upgrading unless you're already replacing your stick. I ended up using the larger red actuator one from the mod kit even though it's not as solid but I like that it engages a little earlier then their new actuator. I am currently working on a video on the new silent JLX with the adjustable switches. Been testing it for a couple months. Stay tuned I'll be finishing that up soon. spring seems to be the same as the JLF. I defiantly want to try the otto upgrade when I can. But if you already have a JLF with the otto there's really no reason to swap it out for the JLX. I actually went back to my seimitsu silent stick.

Hello, I just got the Class of '81 Deluxe cabinet, and I'd like to swap out the joystick during the assembly. Apparently, the control panel and the monitor are 1 unit, so I'm concerned that installing a Sanwa joystick might be different on the new cabinet. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
@TheLivingArcade
@TheLivingArcade 23 күн бұрын
I assume you mean the arcade 1up class of 81. I have not seen the inside of one before but I looked it up and I see how the whole control panel is connected to the monitor. Most of the a1ups I've messed with have sanwa clones in them so the footprint mounting plate is similar but not always. You may have to drill new holes or if the the metal plate on the factory stick can be moved over to the new sanwa and mounted with the factory plate. Also be aware that it appears that the stick is mounted really close to the volume and power switches. I believe its mounted rotated sideways so it fits in that tight spot. So you may have to take the sanwa apart and rotate the PCB with the switches internally so your directions up down ETC are oriented correctly. Make sure you set the restrictor gate to 4 way instead of 8 way (diamond shaped) the emulator can't handle diagonal directions and pacman will hesitate or get stuck because it doesn't understand diagonal inputs. Also be aware that the sanwa has a 5pin connector. I don't know how that arcade 1up is wired. You may need a harness adaptor like this www.diyretroarcade.com/products/plug-and-play-joystick-harness-compatible-with-sanwa-style-joystick-arcade1up-single or something similar. I actually just cut the factory wires and solder directly to the metal contacts on the switches of the sanwa. there's no spade connector but there's enough conductive material outside each switch to solder to. If this sounds like too much to deal with you can try putting in a heavier spring in the factory stick for a more snappy solid feel. The sanwa springs usually fit. focusattack.com/4lb-tension-spring-for-sanwa-jlf/ Check out the arcade1up modifiers groups on FB as well. Have fun and I hope this helps. Let me know how it works out.

@TheLivingArcade 6 ай бұрын
It's unfortunate that those little nuances aren't very clear with online vendors. I believe they're making all the new gates that way moving forward. The "mod" kit as they call it with those other gates and actuators is really cool because I'm the type that constantly messes with things. I was surprised how much I liked that red "square" gate with those rounded notches. It helps you lock in to those directions. I like the red oversized actuator too but I wish they made it out of that same white nylon material. The white nylon is a little softer and rides along the gate better. But I still use the red one. Stay tuned I"m working on another video about the new adjustable silent JLX that came out recently

If there’s nothing wrong with your JLF I’d say stick with that until it breaks. The JLX is a little beefier in that plastic base and the actuator is really nice but it’s not a significant difference. Exact Same switches and clicky not silent. Stay tuned I do have a low budget silent mod I’m going to share and some purists will probably hate it. 😂

You are so right! I don't know why I didn't mention that in the video. Granted arcade owners operators won't be interested in that at all. Who is the best joystick in your opinion? Sanwa JLX TPML Or Qanba JOV8S ???
@TheLivingArcade
@TheLivingArcade 4 ай бұрын
I have yet to test the Qanba it looks really cool though. One factor is that the Qanba is silent. And the JLX is clicky you can really feel the JLX when you actuate the switches. For me when I tried a silent seimitsu I found myself pushing the stick really hard without thinking about it because I wasn't getting that "feedback" from it feeling that click. I did get used to it but the first few weeks my hand and wrist would actually get sore because I was pushing way harder without needing to or thinking about it because I didn't feel that click. Now I love it. But my taste changes over time for no reason. I am testing the new silent adjustable leaf switch JLX right now and I'll be putting out a video on that soon. I'll have to pick up that qanba later on and try that one when I can. I know you won't like this answer but it really boils down to preference. I enjoy trying new sticks. But its all about how it feels to you and if you miss more inputs or not depending on the stick you use. What stick is going to provide you with the most enjoyment? It's about having fun most of all.

Great question. I should have addressed that. There was a preview video from evo Japan that showed adjustable switches on a prototype unit. Hardly any other info and nothing official anywhere about those adjustable switches. And this final release doesn’t have any of those features. Just the normal omron switches they’ve always used. The only way to adjust is by changing out the actuator to different sizes. I think that whole concept was scrapped or there’s going to be a deluxe one later or a different PCB with those adjustable switches you can buy separately. But I can’t find any real info other then that one video unfortunately.

Hmm, that's a shame. I think there's a lot of potential for real innovation in the joystick market and no one seems to really explore possible improvements. I think there's a big grey area between standard fight sticks and the leverless trend that's been picking up steam. Would love to see some creativity with lever fightsticks (and no, not a Crossup)
@TheLivingArcade
@TheLivingArcade 6 ай бұрын
I agree. I'd like to see some more innovation as well. I am currently working on a video on their new silent leaf switch version. But it's a weird space. Some people get so "traditional" they want the exact same spec stick they used on their 90s MAS stick or whatever. "They don't make them like they used to" kind of thing. Or crazy mods that are just too expensive. Like the optical boards they made a while back looked cool especially the magenta adjustable optical analogue board thing. They just made a hall sensor add on for it too! Crazy! Additionally, they don't want to risk an innovation that might not be "tournament" legal or get a bunch of controversy.

You make a good point. For me personally, growing up in the US pretty much everything was Suzo Happ bat tops that I had access to. Then the JLF was exciting for me because it was different and came standard on the Street Fighter sticks. A year ago I switched to a silent seimitsu and I was really blown away by it. Going back to the JLX yes the travel feels like the grand canyon after using the seimitsu for a while. Now I can't decide what I like better. Seimitsu def. for shmups and fighters do feel better with the JLX and JLF for me at this point. But my taste keeps changing. I even find myself going back to square gates on my JLX after using octagonal gates forever.
