New Shepard In-flight Escape Test

7 жыл бұрынOn October 5, 2016, New Shepard performed an in-flight test of the capsule’s full-envelope escape system, designed to quickly propel the crew capsule to safety if a problem is detected with the booster. At T+0:45 and 16,053 feet (4,893 meters), the capsule separated and the escape motor fired, pushing the capsule safely away from the booster. Reaching an apogee of 23,269 feet (7,092 meters), the capsule then descended under parachutes to a gentle landing on the desert floor. After the capsule escape, the booster continued its ascent, reaching an apogee of 307,458 feet (93,713 meters). At T+7:29, the booster executed a controlled, vertical landing back at the West Texas Launch Site, completing its fifth and final mission.

I am a self-professed SpaceX fanboy, but it is undeniably exciting to see Blue Origin make progress on this scale at this speed. Best of luck to Bezos and his team.

Compared to space X This is not progress. Considdering they started at the same time year 2000. Space x achivements is like 20 times harder to accomplish, and i do think im to mild on that sauce. Its not even close. Lets hope they are in schedule on the New Glenn. then they might have anything to do or say about it. I think, any investment in space is worth it, so i think its good bezoose join the party. Main problem i have with them. I dont like their methods, their morals, only other than making sapceflight possible for the general public.

spacex is pretty pathetic. they buy old and busted nasa programs or get donations from them for things they thought were stupid, spend a fuckton of money on it, publicize it, then people go nuts. meanwhile, blue origins just launches a new rocket every once in a while setting benchmarks.

grr ummmpee Exactly benchmarks have Blue Origin set? They've never launched to orbit, they've barely passed the Karmen line. Meanwhile SpaceX have launched to orbit 42 times and put up over 135 tonnes of payload. They've landed 17 rockets, 2 of which had previously flown. By the time this comment is 24 hours old, they'll have flown yet another payload to orbit with a used rocket, and probably have landed that one too. I'm not hating on Blue Origin, indeed i'm quite excited to see New Glenn, but i'm not sure where you're getting off saying that they're somehow leading the way while SpaceX does cheap tricks?

landing is impressive, but very slow, an inefficient use of fuel .. compare this to SpaceX, which comes down at high speed with stable control, then quickly comes to an abrupt stop landing. Technically this is MUCH more difficult, but required since any fuel wasted on landing is fuel that can not be used for lifting payload to orbit.

Well, ahem, bigcooter, New Sheppard is a sub-orbital craft meant for space tourism, not for launching anything into orbit. SpaceX doesn't have a similar launch vehicle to this.

Love how they didn't include the video of the capsule rocking back and forth and finally flipping all the way over. Would have been a rough ride for anybody in there. But of course, still safe from a potential explosion, so it'd be OK. Regardless, it's great to see this working and I'll be looking forward to seeing the same tests on the final version of the capsule.

This is human and American engineering at it's best. Watching the engine refire while falling to Earth and the craft stays stable and had a touchdown that smooth. Beautiful stuff. I love the excitement of the commentators. That was truly impressive

If the booster isn't vertical or tumbling and facing the ground as it may be during a bad scenario, will the escape system compensate for that or send the capsule straight at the grounds?

Specifically, it'd compare its position, acceleration, and attitude to the preprogrammed flight trajectory and expected deviance. If it falls outside of those expected parameters significantly, it can abort.

This class of launch vehicle isn't intended to put satellites into space. It's for sub-orbital space tourism.

They have been getting more and more aggressive with their landing profile. It's now much more like the hover slam performed by the F9. While this rocket will never deliver large payloads to orbit their other rocket they are designing right now and they will be able to apply what they have learned with the little one to the big one.

it doesnt have that much fuel. the engine is just able to throttle much lower so it can actually hover.

The way they land it here is extremely inefficient, I agree. I imagine if the New Glenn ever comes to fruition it will be much more like SpaceX in its landing, but that's in the distant future I believe. BO is way behind SpaceX.

Eh, this is cake compared to what SpaceX has to do. Their booster is waaaaay taller and comes down at much higher velocity. Also the Falcon 9 first stage is incapable of hovering, so it has to suicide burn.

Ok so I've done my research on this rocket and so the engine of what you guys have said is that its a BE-3 rocket engine...the thrust of it is about 490 KN(110,000 lbs) the burn time is about 110 seconds and your fuel being LH2/LOX...i can't wait until you guys start sending astronauts up into space...I wish I could be one of the first but I'm just a kid and I have no money...but either way I love your guys way of returning both the capsule and the BE-3 engine back to the ground...being launched up into space would be a once in a lifetime experience for someone like me who has a love for space and rocket technology

Посадка мягкая а пыль поднимается от того что при не посредстенном приземлении из под капсулы выходит поток сжатого воздуха это сделано для того что б замедлить падение
