A few things which keep coming up in the comments, which I want to answer in a blanket fashion, using the same K.I.S.S. attitude exhibited in the video: 1. Raising the roof of the shop and/or putting in a taller door: This is a whole lot of work for little benefit. I DO NOT DO ROUTINE MAINTENANCE in this shop. Twice or 3 times per year I pull a tractor in for major work. I either duck my head or push the tractor in as seen in this video. I will not be going through the extensive work of raising the roof to avoid ducking my head or pushing a tractor in. 2. Putting the freezers in the existing shop: I greatly value the 18' width of this bay, vs. the 12' width of the bays in the garage. That extra 6' makes a huge difference in versatility. 3. Putting the shop in the new addition: It doesn't work from a site traffic flow point of view. The freezer addition works great there. Also see #1; a higher ceiling is not a big issue. 4. Building a walk-in freezer: Bluntly, they suck. See my previous video on walk-in vs chest freezers. 5. An upstairs wood shop: I do not mind walking up stairs. If mobility issues arise as I age, I can move the woodworking equipment back downstairs.

As you told your well thought out plan, it resonated strongly with me as I've transitioned from repairing rowing shells in my long but skinny shop to many other projects. I think it takes your kind of thought processing, a much more complex way of finding a solution, rather than just simply building a new space that will cost a bucket of money, maintenance and real estate taxes. It takes longer to figure it out but it is more rewarding in the long run. Thanks for all your videos!

Such a ridiculous thing to say. A person isn't "an old school farmer", or a "big city architect". A person is an infinitely complex, unique thing. Drop the stupid stereotypes, and treat people as individuals. You think this channel would have half a million subs if the guy was just a farmer, and nothing else? You don't think his big city architect past is a big reason why he is a compelling teacher?

I don’t write comments and I am not sure you will read this because of some bad experiences 😢. Just want you to know I love your channel and hope you are just slowing down for the winter. I enjoy your videos because it brings back memories and I love watching how you manage and adapt. I grew up on a small dairy farm- my dad sold the cows when I was in third or fourth grade because he couldn’t keep up with the industrial farms which were just coming to be. I still remember how sad he was- even though he said nothing to us kids. He kept farming-a small homestead using today’s terminology….while he worked two jobs. Your videos bring back happy memories. I hold you will continue.

Hi Pete, I was going to drop a comment of thanks, but wasn't able to. I hope everything is okay and that nothing bad has happened. Or that you're not so sick of comments that you've had the last straw. I'm amazed by the sorts of things people comment on freely, without concern and or consideration for you awesome You Tubers. You're providing us with entertainment, knowledge, information to mention but a few things. You need to build whatever shop, storage works for you and your farm/family, Pete. If you don't ask for suggestions maybe viewers could just keep their thoughts/suggestions to themselves, just my opinion, obviously. Just glad there's an option to let you know how much I enjoy the great content from across all aspects of the farm, thank you again. Seasons Greetings from a wet and windy Scotland. Regards Ian

Storing your cars outside will cause less rust than storing them inside. Corrosion requires an oxidizer (salt), moisture, and a warm environment. By storing your cars outside in the winter you are eliminating the heat needed to start the reaction.

Your posts are like taking a course in common sense. Love seeing the thought process.

Your plans for the future are well thought out... so much so that you remind me of how my own father would approach his projects,,, which I am happy to say I also followed in my journey through life which has led me now to a comfortable life of retirement so I can enjoy my grandchildren and great grandchildren... although I do avoid stairs when at all possible... I am a disabled American veteran so stairs can be more of a challenge than I want to overcome... watching your videos... every last one of them is always a joy for me...

Great plan Pete, impulsive people waist time and money. I know because I've been impulsive my whole life and have many regrets. Your thoughtful ways are good for your younger viewers. I'm ten years your senior and I hear my grandparents clearer now than I did when they were living. "haist makes waist" remember that one?

Your thinking process about your shop is exactly how I do things too. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who questions everything and investigates multiple options for solutions. Whatever the outcome, one thing is for certain, you’ll have cleared out and gotten rid of a lot of stuff and that right there is a huge win.

At last someone who gives aesthetic and practical analysis to building a workshop. Thank you, All too often the tin box industrial look wins out, especially it seems in the USA. The repurposing of what you have sounds right and leaves cash in the bank for the hidden extras. Thank you for posting from a traditional builder here in the UK.

You are always thinking of the things that are most important in life!! Remind me of an old Edward G Robinson movie our vines have tender grapes. Keep up the good work, entertaining all of us!

Wood shop, great idea! I've got a second story one also. One thing I changed from my outside 4' × 4' door. I replaced it with a 9'×7' insulated garage door because it made putting material, especially plywood very easy with a set of forks on the loader. You have a long and enjoyable retirement and keep those videos coming.

Whew. Function over form only goes so far with me, and the appearance of that would definitely cross the line.

I agree with your way of thinking Pete. As we grow older, we realize the things we thought were important to us when we were younger are no longer that important to us now. I always liked the idea of making due with what I have instead of investing money in something may or may not bring any return on the investment.

Pete, if this turns out as well as the upper barn where you feed now, it will be great. I love the way you can feed the cattle "indoors" now. Wish I would have had that set up when I was farming. These type videos require the most courage or thickest skin because you open yourself up to all the "experts" who don't mind spending YOUR money! Murfreesboro TN

You inspired me Pete! I was in the process of possibly putting up a 30x40 building for my distribution business. Listening to you made me think "Do I really need that big of a building to store parts?". The surprising answer for me is maybe an old shipping container or two. Weather tight and serves the purpose. And the cost is in the budget for my growing business. Thanks Pete!
