I am in the middle of a giant paper mache project, (a semi life-size pumpkinhead from the 80's movie) and this is so much smoother than the original clay recipe I found on your site last year. mix flying all over...it's the design of the mixing bowl. Centrifugal force against the sloped side of the bowl will send ingredients everywhere! Use a straight sided bowl and that will stop. (Grandma taught me that when making cookie dough.)

#Michael Abel I don't know if you can use dry joint compound or not - you would have to do an experiment to find out. I never get mold, because I dry my pieces quickly, and then seal them so they won't absorb water from the air. Mold can't grow without water.
@VickiSchwarz
@VickiSchwarz 10 жыл бұрын
I would think that you COULD use dry joint compound. You only add water to get the mud, so you could use it dry I would think and adjust the amount of oil you use to make up for the water you aren't using
@jamiehaynes5550
@jamiehaynes5550 8 жыл бұрын
+Drapeta Berry As a professional drywaller, I would NOT recommend using dry joint compound, reason being is that most every dry compound has a set drying time, for example: 90 minute compound powder will set up in 90 minutes, all it needs is moisture and the oil is enough to to cause the reaction it needs to set up and harded. However it may slow the drying time of the joint compound which will give you a longer working time, but it would not be good for long term storage as it will be set up and dry within hours unless you add a small amount of vinegar to slow the drying time even more.
@karlab9557
@karlab9557 8 жыл бұрын
From my work with joint compound in my house, I learned that the dry compound mixed with water dries on the wall due to a chemical reaction with the air, that is why it dries quicker. The "mud" that you buy readi-made in the tubs takes 24 hours to dry, and it is not drying due to a chemical reaction. They are two different things.

+julie cream You can't use pipe joint compound in this recipe. It's a totally different thing. However, you can use newspaper, as long as you soak it longer to allow it time to disintigrate. Lots of people use recycled paper. If you don't have access to wallboard joint compound, do a search for "paper pulp recipe." It's usually just mushed up paper and some sort of glue or paste.

I absolutely applaud your efforts at making your own air dry clay. By what I've seen on this video including your tips this is an excellent clay and considering the money savings involved no one can go wrong making this. I cannot thank you enough for freely sharing your creation with us. Goodness only knows I would have never come up with this on my own. You can be sure I will be making this as soon as I can. Halloween is less than 2 months away and I want to slam into this. I do have one question however. If making small figurine type items with this what would you guestimate the dry time for? I just need an idea to go by so I can plan. Thank you again Jonni.

If you put a thin layer over an armature, it should dry within a couple of days. Making it thin is really important.

You could use the fast-setting paper and paste technique that I used for the Pantalone mask. You can find it on my channel. There may be a substitute for the corn starch, but you would need to do some experiments - maybe just using the white flour, and leaving out the starch would work.

Hi Jonni! I just wondered a few things about this clay. Aproximately how long does it take for it to dry completely? And how hard does it become?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 11 жыл бұрын
The clay does dry very hard, but it will soak up water if it's left out in the rain. Some people have used the original recipe outside - they seal the piece first with deck or concrete sealer, paint, then coat several times with a waterproof varnish, preferably one that has a UV filter so the sun doesn't destroy the finish. I haven't done any tests yet to find out how long they'll last.

It's very kind of you to share your recipe with everyone and I appreciate it. I'm unlikely to try it out immediately but I very much hope to soon. I've been preparing to make some sculptures with paper mache and cloth and just sculpted parts of my halloween costume that way but I find the lack of detail that really allows for disappointing so I thought I'd look for something I can sculpt over it in places. This looks great for that, since I use glue for the top layer anyway so it seems it would adhere easily. Back in myyyyy day... we used wallpaper paste for all of the layers. Glue is probably just as expensive but the layer under the surface can be made using only flour and water! I wish the internet were more of a thing back then so I could have learned all this nifty make-it-at-home stuff to save money. But I'm most happy that this seems sliiiightly more non-toxic than the (likely wallet-breaking) air dry clay you get at the store! Hooray! Cheers. ~Jem

Hi Linsey. I'm curious - do you use it as a thin layer in the mold, or are you casting fairly thick pieces? And how big are they? I would love to know more.
@lindseylooft7187
@lindseylooft7187 5 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Paper Mache I cast horns in a 2-part press mold I made from caulk. The first set was solid. They dried fine without warping or cracking. The thickest part for each half was maybe 5/8"? They were heavyish, so I made a 2nd hollow set (I used tin foil filler until they had dried some). The walls are maybe 1/4" thick. They are far more lightweight. The tips are quite thin. Both sets are extremely durable and bone-like, dry! So 3D forms totally work. They are springbok antelope horns ~7" long. Also - I made some very thin (1/8"?) pressed slabs with textures, in some silicone molds, to replicate some cut metal designs, and it works great in thin press molds as well. You can make faux metal jewelry with some gilded effects. So many possible applications!

Hi Lynda. The air-dry clay would work for this purpose, but be sure to make up a small batch and test it yourself before your class. The issue to worry about is the dexterity that might be needed to press a bit of the clay thinly onto the paper mache. If you put on a thick layer, it will take a very long time to dry. Also, do a search for the rhino video on this channel to see a few things I've discovered about how to use it. I'll put up another video soon to make this info easier to find.

Ooo this recipe excites me!! In the video it looks fabulous. As soon as I get more glue I am making this. I just made your other paper clay recipe and it's quite "sticky" for lack of a better word...could be my drywall compound, or just that I'm not used to this clay yet, but I am excited to try it out. I love that you showed us how to measure the toilet paper, because that was something I was struggling with. This recipe looks perfect. Thanks so much! =) ♫

I hope you like it. The original recipe was sticky so it would stick nicely to an armature. You do need to use a glue and water mixture to make sure the new air dry clay sticks to things - but other than that, it works really well, It feels like Activa Paper Clay.

By the way, there are some fantastic books about sculpting heads (usually in clay) that you might find at your local library. And some of the authors also have videos here on KZfaq.

I haven't had any problems with cracking, but I do use a thin layer of the material over a paper or foil armature, which allows the air dry clay to shrink without cracking. Have fun with it!

Can't wait to try this for my elephants that are in the works. I get the water out of the paper by putting the 'pulp' in an old kitchen towel and twisting it to wring the water out. Thanks for keeping us informed and excited to try new things.

According to one of my readers, the product is called "joint finish" in Australia. There's a page on my blog that you can find using the search term "what is joint compound called" and a number of people have offered their suggestions.

Thanks for all of the great tips. The final product looks so smooth...can't wait to make some. You did mention using bleach to resist mould but for those who are adverse to the idea of bleach, you can use clove oil. Perhaps using distilled water might be a better option too, as the bacteria in the water turns things sour. Just a thought.
