You've seen GCN's first look at the new, wireless SRAM Red eTap groupset, but how does it actually perform on the road?
Subscribe to GCN: gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN
In this video, Si heads out with a group of journalists to put it to the test. With a unique new system for changing gears, SRAM Red eTap looked very intriguing when we recently got a first look. Well now we've been able to try it out on the open road. Find out in this video what Si, and pro rider Loren Rowney think about the groupset, as they take a ride around the beautiful roads of Schweinfurt, Germany.
We talk lever ergonomics, shifting performance and try out key shifts like when sprinting or dropping from the big ring when climbing.
For a more detailed look at the tech behind this, make sure you check out or first look video: gcn.eu/eTapFirstLook

Great vids! My dream bike now consists of the hydraulic disc version of these levers, and a frame that only has cable routing for the rear brake -no cable routing required for the derailleurs! This groupset makes a frame designers job easier -no internal cable routing for gears and no need for an internal battery as with Di2.

The method of front derailleur shifting on this groupset seems unfortunate. When you change chainrings on a mechanical groupset you almost always change at least one and if you're using a compact crankset sometimes even two cogs in the rear simultaneously with the shifting of the front. With this groupset the front and rear shifting would have to happen one after another as opposed to at the same time, disrupting a rider's rhythm.

Hi Si! You said the shifting method was different to what most mechanical shifters would use, in that one shifter shifts up and one shifter shifts down -- how then do you shift between the big and small chainrings on a climb? "Little ring, big ring, little ring, big ring! Brilliant!"

I like this more than Di2 just from looking at it - di2 has effectively 3 levers, this is more simple. I'd like to move away from the big S, as it seems to be confusing itself and having incremental altherations/changes between parts, so that you HAVE use whatever part. E-TAP: a bloody good thing!!

Nice work Si, and it looks like a great Groupset. A few questions - (1) The front mech - does it still have the Yaw function, or does it auto-trim like DA Di2 9070 ? Did you get any cage rub in 53/25 ? (2) Shifting in the front - do you have to hit both buttons at exactly the same time, or will it still shift if you hit one button a split second before the second ? (3) You mentioned that the other parts are the same, but I will ask - I assume the Aerolink brake callipers are unchanged ? Thanks
@gcn
@gcn 9 жыл бұрын
LosihoTTT Yeah the front mech still uses Yaw, and it worked perfectly on my bike here. As for the front shift, it activates a shift as soon as both levers are held down simultaeously. So you can press and hold one and then tap the other and it will shift. As for the brakes, I'm not 100% sure but I would assume they are the same. New graphics look cool though.

Is si using a Quarq power meter and Garmin vector pedals.Also i was wondering if you could shed some light on bike fitting my friend who i race with has just had a bike fitting and says he feels better for it.I have a hemivertebrae and scoliosis in my back and this can occasionally cause pain once i have finished my ride or during it has also prevented me using tt bars.I have called around bike shops about bike fitting some say good things others bad for example they may change saddle height to much and cause you start using different muscle that you haven't used riding before and this can take a whole season to get used to using new muscles. I was wondering what your advice would be and if you had any tips. Keep up the great content :)

I often shift from front small to big and back a couple of gears on the rear to maintain momentum and cadence, scooping both the paddles inwards on my Rival setup. Is this in anyway possible? Or will I have to shift into big then quickly try not to lose momentum before making that rear change?

How about if you want to shift to your small ring and down the cogs at the same time like I can on my Campag Record thumb shifters? Press both thumbs at the same time and now I'm working with shorter ratios and when I want to shift to my big ring and taller cog I press both paddles together and I'm working with bigger ratios. It does not seem possible with this...

So if you have to press both buttons at the same time to shift to the other ring, you can't change gears on your rear derailleur at the same time right? I'd think that would be kind of a problem for example if you approach an ascent and want to shift into the small ring but not have that huge jump in cadence so you shift down at the front and at the same time into a smaller sprocket at the rear. How do you handle that kind of situation with that new kind of system?

Like Di2 it's just not relevant to private individuals, no team car for me when 50miles from home! At least mechanical can be Mcgyvered into working, when electronic breaks it's all over. As long as they keep a mechanical option at all levels and don't drop it for electric on the higher group sets fine.

Why isn't there an option to have the front change automagically when it needs to? No need to double shift the front DR. Just imagine a continuous sweep of gears and the left and right levers run through them all. A simple bit of software to change the front ring and shift a few at the back when the crossover comes alon..

I equate this to something like air jacks on a race car. Sure you could install air jacks on a street car, but what's the point? Useful for racing, but a floor jack and stands is just fine for a street car. Similar this, useful for racing, but what's really the benefit in a non-racing scenario? I guess if you have money to blow... Then there's the issue of the shifting being completely different than every other system. So if you have multiple bikes you'll likely have to "get used" to shifting different every time you switch between this bike and another, similar to getting used to different clutch pedal feel in different cars.
