This is exactly the info I was looking for. I ordered my starlink mini yesterday and I also ordered a 5521 to usb-c PD adapter so I can run it off of a power bank. In theory it should work but I hadn't seen anyone else do it yet so I appreciate the info.

I have a portable power bank with a typical 12V "cig adapter" port, a 120V integrated ac port, and a bank of USB ports, one of which is an 80W PD port. I plan on running the power bank on both the USB PD port with an adapter like you got, as well as the included AC adapter to compare the power draw. Offhand I'm guessing the PD port is going to be more efficient since it's not having to power the internal AC inverter, go through the starlink AC adapter back to DC.

You will consume more power going from dc to ac to dc. Also remember the minimum voltage listed is 12 volts. I'm not sure what the actual cutoff is. A 12 volt battery at full charge IA about 12.8 volts. If it shuts off at 12, you won't have much run time.

I was afraid that would be the case. Still excited to get mine. Thank you very much for the clarification!

Can you measure idle amp load with a multimeter? Does it get warm to the touch? Wondering how much battery I would need to run it offgrid while camping. Can you also run it at the same time as your main starlink? If so then you can rent out the mini when not using it.
@ANNEBOYD23
@ANNEBOYD23 Ай бұрын
I can use the main starlink and the mini simultaneously. I'll get back to you on the current draw

Thank you for putting this out. While you are using the mini at your service address of your residential service, is the mini using up some of its 50gb of data?
@ANNEBOYD23
@ANNEBOYD23 Ай бұрын
Yes. Any data used counts toward the total. In the account settings on the app there is a Toggle to allow additional data charges automatically when you exceed the 50gb.

The Starlink fine print says you have to first have the regular Starlink dishy account..THEN you can ADD the mini to your plan. So in my rural area, I'm already paying $120/m for the damned dishy..I don't know why I would pay $150 to get the mini.

Have you tried connecting this directly to a 12v system?
@douglasmontgomery6315
@douglasmontgomery6315 Ай бұрын
A couple of issues with that is the Starlink Mini needs slightly over 12 VDC and the typical 12 volt battery static voltage is 12.6 volts. Lastly, with lighter, higher gauge (skinnier) wire...higher voltage is best as to limit the voltage loss for long runs. So, using a up converter is the best (12VDC - 48 VDC) or a PD60-100 USB-C to 5521 Barrel cable). As a few below have mentioned, if you're going to use power tool batteries, do your research on which ones have the low voltage cutoff on the BMS internal to battery pack, not in the tool. Another great reason I love my Ryobi tools :).

What cable are you using? I have one that I'd like to run off a power bank, but I have no idea what cable I can use. I'd like to get it onto a USB-C.
@ANNEBOYD23
@ANNEBOYD23 Ай бұрын
I cut a cable off of a 12 volt power supply I had laying around. In my experience, a lot of power bricks that put out 12 volts use the same size barrel plug

Is it possible to purchase only the Starlink Mini, or do you need to have the Starlink Standard?
@rudolphjn
@rudolphjn Ай бұрын
Right now its just an extension on existing plans in the U.S. Orher areas with no congestion are allowed to get it as a single plan. I imagine the FCC also would also cause issues if the mini isn't getting the minimum standard of 100mb down 20 mb up.

It will kill your batteries as there is no communication to shut the batteries down when necessary. Its not worth it and you wont remember to change them before they die

The 30 bucks a month is actually an add on - only available if you currently have the 120/month regular starlink service - correct? and can you run the regular system t your home - while also running the Mini from a remote location. (for example, I'm out in colorado camping with the mini- my wifes home in Michigan with ther full system - can we both be using the systems at the same time?
