NEW STUDY Analyses ROCK ART Carved Next To DINOSAUR Footprints In BRAZIL

The Serrote do Letreiro site in northeastern Brazil has been studied extensively over the years by palaeontologists due to the theropod, sauropod and iguanodontian dinosaur tracks that can be found there. However, up until recently, little research had been done on Serrote do Letreiro's many petroglyphs, which are often found close to the dinosaur footprints. A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports analyses these petroglyphs and their relationship to the footprints. It seems that the ancients respected the dinosaur fossils and chose to intentionally include them in their graphic panels.

Thinking about it, it's not surprising that our ancestors considered places with fossil footprints: mysterious footprints imprinted on rock, this is something magic! We know from historical times that Greeks and Romans had their own mythological interpretation of remarkable fossils. Let's say that this research confirms a normal human behaviour that ensured through the ages.

I honestly think they were trying to find out what huge animal made these prints. They wanted to hunt that thing lol. I always assume humans knew or found dino prints and fossils. There's a cambodian temple that is 1000 years old with a carving of a complete stegosaurus, someone must of found an intact skeleton.

The petroglyphs are wonderful. I wish we knew what the symbolism was. Short of a Time Machine, we’ll never know for sure. But just fascinating. Thanks Laura!

I honestly think they wanted to find them because they thought wow that'll feed the whole family and then slowly turned into symbolism or they were marking areas trying to track them somehow not knowing they're extinct.

The theropod footprints were likely associated with emu footprints by the indigenous people. The Saudopod footprints were probably associated with some mythological creature, as in most indigenous folklore there are creatures that are modern animals but with exaggerated sizes, such as the " boi tatá " , a giant snake in legends.

You're wrong if you say the poison spider site doesn't have a relationship between the rock art and the tracks. There is a wild looking rock art figure, it appears very different than what we think of as dinosaurs, its some sort of crazy looking biped with multiple tentacles instead of hands... but if you look at its feet, they are large, three toed, and pretty much exactly what the nearby tracks look like, so I do think they are connected. Thanks for the very interesting video!

aaahhh, i see, now.....the pre-historic humans saw the tracks and pecked or scratched symbols that told of what they thought was the meaning of said tracks.... perhaps, linking them to the mega-fauna birds they knew of.....wondering how the tracks were made in such a hard matrix? crazy, man! like, far away and right arm, dude....good stuff, Laura-nator.....gotta go, laundry's buzzin'....see ya Wed!

Without a local narrative I can only imagine the anxiety an ancient would feel seeing dinosaur tracks. And I wonder if such a narrative continued on and into early origin stories and deities.

No question about that. Huge bones found around the Mediterranean were enshrined as "the thigh bone of Herakles," and other parts of gods. The griffon has been shown to be the ancient interpretation of Protoceratops fossils. The remains of mammoths inspired the Cyclops. This aspect of archaeology is fascinating, and sheds a lotta light on the origin of fantastic beasts and gods.

Hello John, they certainly felt it was something special. Locals today attribute them to saints or, giant chickens from the time before Noah’s flood, as funny as it sounds, even though most are pretty much aware they are dinosaur footprints. Human cultures are pretty complex!
