New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe: The Kotaku Review

New Super Mario Bros. U is the second-best 2D Mario game. New Super Luigi U is an incredible showcase of inventive level design. They came out six and five years ago, respectively, though today you can play them on a public toilet.
Blessed with the opportunity to critically revisit games I have several years' experience thinking about, I saw fit to make an unorthodox review which I believe benefits greatly from the video format. This review focuses on petty nitpicks of 2D Mario games in general, primarily pointing out examples in New Super Mario Bros. U. I strive to do so in a way that is at least entertaining. If you have neither the time nor the guts to watch a 36-minute video, I have provided the script on Kotaku Dot Com: kotaku.com/new-super-mario-br...

something i really appreciate about your style of critique is this sense that it's ok for parts of things to be bad, and you can still have a good time with them despite that. your arguments are almost always really convincing to me, but so is your whole vibe of joy when everything's actually working out

irurwurst yeah lol it’s almost as if there could be a whole huge, popular series of videos critiquing tiny parts of games while allowing that the games are still good, and even include a disclaimer at the beginning saying it is “ok to enjoy things while being aware of their more problematic components” and NOT have like ANY haters at all because that disclaimer would be so sincere and foolproof!

Tim: 2D Mario is my favorite game series Dragon Quest: I... I thought we had something special... (Runs away in tears)
@cube2fox
@cube2fox 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, but 2D Dragon Quest and 3D Dragon Quest are the same genre (classic RPG) while 2D Mario and 3D Mario are not. The former is a linear platformer with emphasis on precise jumping, while the latter is less a platformer than a collectathon with much less emphasis on jumping. The only exception is Super Mario 3D World, which is a bit more like the 2D Mario games in that the levels are linear. Also, the gameplay of 3D Dragon Quest is still basically 2D, in that most of the game could be played with a top down camera like in the 2D Dragon Quests. This is because the surface of the Earth is mostly flat.

I got an ad for Grammarly prior to a Tim Rogers video. It's ironic and hilaious before the video even starts
@kotaku
@kotaku 5 жыл бұрын
george, i gotta say: i hate those grammarly ads. i see them EVERY TIME I come to look at the comments on my own videos. like they're yelling at me, trying to make me believe i don't know what i'm doing. i know what i'm doing. all the examples in the ads make me so mad. "consider removing passive voice"! yeah! i know! i been doin that for like twenty-five years, pal!! they should include some wild oddball examples in that video to maybe give people a sense that their product educates people into better writers, instead of conditioning them into conformity. give me some examples like, "do you really want to use a verb other than 'said' in this quote attribution?" "consider rewriting this sentence to exclude a 'be' verb." "dude, adverbs are hideous. abolish them and instead use better verbs." "you just used two synonymous adjectives separated by a comma. that is the habit of a weak, pathetic writer." i will add: i do all my writing in sublime text. it has excellent performance, runs in an unlocked frame rate, never slows down, and is impervious to all spell-checking and grammar-checking functions on this computer. i have turned all of those off, anyway.
@DavidWoods255
@DavidWoods255 5 жыл бұрын
@@kotaku My favourite Grammarly ad is the guy who looks to be in his 30s trying to write something like "me and Jake went to the park" and it corrects him like his mother should have 20 years ago with "uhh, Jake and I". I also get irked at those who throw commas between adjectives that mean the same thing. I propose that you do away with the idea of making a game for a while and instead make a counter-app to Grammarly that makes useful but kind of insulting suggestions. Call it "Daddy's English" or "Grammar Heck" and make all the money.

You can play as Blue Toad by holding down L on the character select, thus also being able to play with four people and nobody being forced to use Toadette or Nabbit. I do wish this feature were more obvious, but at least it's there. Maybe Nintendo could patch it so Blue Toad is just another character, or put some text on screen to explain how to change it.

As I tend to play classic mario-games with a special set of rules, I still like a system with lives very much. When you play in a rogue-like fashion, lives are an important ressource for you to make it through the game, and one of the main reasons to explore stages. This game is amazing in both variety and quality in stage designs(which is very important to me) - ghost houses are part of that.

Thank you Tim Rogers for being the only Videogame Content Creator that inspires me to actually compliment the quality of their work! This video is great! (also you said you 'hate levels with darkness' and then proceeded to directly compare New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with Celeste, which features a segment of a level that's built around navigating / platforming in a dark area with no lights. I think Celeste does it well, but I want to hear your justification).

I would love for wario and waluigi to be playable and to have their own unique playstyles(and Luigi too). Also the hypothetical convenience cost is STUPID. I payed for the switch and it’s portability. I shouldn’t have to pay extra for a game because it’s console is portable. Might aswell release Super Mario World at full price at this point. I hope they add wario and waluigi to a 2D Mario game. Maybe even as dlc and have it’s own rivalry story.
