The end of a decade looms. I succumbed to the irresistible lure of making a ranked list video chronicling the best games of the decade. I made the first decision instantaneously: for 10 years, I'd pick 10 games. Then I froze. How would I pick the 10 games? Days later, I'd somehow made a 50-minute video.

2010 was in the last decade. This decade doesn't end until next year. Because there was no year zero.

If you believe this, you must also believe that the 2010s didn't start until 2011. This only makes sense when you are referring to decades in order, as in "the 202nd decade", which is not how anyone talks about decades.
@aichpvee
@aichpvee 4 жыл бұрын
@@shoopj The first decade of the 21st century was 2001-2010, the second is 2011-2020. If you want to say "best of the 201xs," go ahead. Ten years is *a* decade, but it is not a *the* decade.

One of my favourite ever things is the final 30 seconds of his 2h55 Pac-Man review, where he's sat at the editing desk, reassuring viewers that the *next* review (Tokimeki Memorial, which he was finishing up the editing of at that moment) would *definitely* be significantly shorter than the Pac-Man one. "Mark my words!" he says, with the nearly-finished Tokimeki review in front of him at that moment. *Definitely* shorter! The Tokimeki Memorial review: 6 hours long 😂

Undertale bit got me. You’re an amazing human being and even if you feel what you’re doing isn’t meaningful or substantial enough, your passion is palpable and that sort of passion is contagious. I and I assume many others have been inspired by your videos to create and be creative, to just be ourselves, in a way that seems also silly to admit. You are sharing something wonderful, and regardless of whether a given video lives up to your desires, you shouldn’t overlook the impact you have on others. It’s true you put on a silly persona, but there’s an authenticity to how wholebuttedly you throw yourself into that silliness, to the point that it becomes actually genuine. Please know that you are loved and appreciated and inspiring.

I agree with what you said, but I also agree with Tim. Undertale is the kind of game that makes you feel insignificant/uncreative. They made so much with so little. It’s like great guitar solos and classic song writing. You feel like you should be able to do it too, but you can’t.

Just listening to the Bad End podcast now and it's gotten to the bit where you talk about how you feel after you post a video... just wanted to say I really, truly appreciate all your videos and they genuinely make my life better, simply because I enjoy your style and sense of humour so much and my mood is always lifted by watching the videos and hearing you talk. @@PandaXs1 There are some weird and interesting decisions, mostly its just a pretty poor translation by someone who is unlikely to be a professional translator with a ton of interference from Japanese. Which is a shame, I hoped I'd find some overarching strategy and/or clever translation decisions, but on the other hand it's a pretty good example of what manga translations often are. I actually kinda chose it on a whim, I had never read it before in any language either, I just knew I wanted to look into the translation of realia in a manga. I had watched the anime though and like it well enough. Anyway, I went looking for a suitable series I could easily and legally get my hands on, saw Lucky Star, and figured it'd be filled to the brim with what I wanted to research, so I ordered the first volume in Japanese and bought the English translation on Book Walker's web-service.

@@PandaXs1 Yeah, it was definitely translated by a Japanese person, and quite certainly not a professional. Her English is fluent enough if we only look at grammatical accuracy, but it's ridiculously non-idiomatic at times. The source text's Japanese interferes with the translation's English in ways that make it clear the translation was just given to someone who could read the language and she probably wasn't paid that well or not given much time to work on it.

Dark Souls, it's sequels, and the influence it's had on the industry is LITERALLY the only reason I didn't completely give up on video games back in 2012. It finally feels like at least SOME developers are making games for me again. If fallen order had come out even five years ago it would've been either a samey open-world game with no level design to speak of, or a completely linear rehash of force unleashed with bad god of war combat. The fact that I'm genuinely enjoying a star wars game in 2019 that isn't just my 10th replay of kotor II is insane, and it's all thanks to dark souls. Dark Souls 1 is my favorite game of all time with a bullet, a masterpiece of the highest order, literally no amount of praise is enough. You'll hear no complaints from me.

This video deserves millions of views and so do most of Tim Roger’s videos. The fact this video does not have millions of views only makes me feel a greater sense of appreciation for having stumbled upon this old video on Kotaku (a channel I haven’t heard very much good about over the last several years) - but alas here I am binging all the Tim Roger’s Kotaku videos and wondering why Kotaku didn’t push for more content writers and creatives like Tim? To be fair Tim is a one in a million talent and a 1 of 1 personality but surely this format could work with Kotaku’s wide reaching network of professionals and viewers. Find someone passionate, find someone knowledgeable, find someone relatable while also being their own person, and have them write about video games emphasis on writing about video games bc too many sites go beyond meta and talk about stuff that is not of concern and actively detracts from the viewing experience.

I want to see Tim Rogers and Brian Gilbert from Polygon make a video together, it would be the ultimate fusion of bespectacled weirdness.

There is no chance we won’t be clamoring for another Tim Rogers game of the 2020s video in 10 years. You may not have achieved what you wanted in game design yet, but your videos are all tiles in an amazing, personal, hilarious mosaic. There’s no one who does what you do, and you are deeply appreciated.

I remember reading your articles back in the "action button dot net" days and really hating your "new games journalism" style that seemed overly pretentious and contrarian for the sake of cool irony. In the years following, I think high school me was just jealous of your ability to purely like what you liked and dislike what you disliked, regardless of what series or developer the game came from. You don't know me, and I'm not trying to pretend to know you, but now I really enjoy the stuff you put out. Unless I hate it. This one, I do not hate. Keep being you, man.

@@andyespinozam nah, dark souls is the dark souls of dark souls games, sekiro is just the dark souls of soulslike games. Funnily enough, donkey kong jungle freeze is the dark souls of mario games, and guitar hero is the dark souls of dead genres

Hey Tim, as a lifelong Brooklynite - the borough will have you down in the dumps, especially this time of the year... don't let it get to you and keep those creative juices flowing. You're the internet sensation of the decade. ✍🏾 Videoball looks dope 👌🏾

Tim. I just paused the video before it even began. I know what Dragon Quest XI means to you. If you do not give it your game of the decade. I will feel great sadness Edit: After having seen your video game of the decade, and the story behind it, and no mention of Dragon Quest at all, the depths of my sadness cannot be known. I had no idea you developed your own game, I'm going to buy it as soon as I can. I hope we can help get your game's cost paid!

Before watching the video, I thought that there were only 2 options. That DQXI would be his #1 game of the decade, or that DQXI would be his #2 game of the decade. To not only not see it in the top 10, but not see it as an honorable mention, is incredibly shocking. No hate btw as I like his list, but it just surprised me.

How in the world is this video about the best games of the decade SHORTER than a video about a nominal update to an existing controller? Tim Rogers. That's how. Bless this man.
