I've been making film music for years in logic and never made time to look into this editing tool. I can't imagine how many hours it will save me moving forward. Your rundown was clear and easy to follow. You're a living legend! Cheers Chris!

Man, this video just saved my butt. I received a project to mix that had a couple tempo changes so I used the adapt tempo feature. But of course that just made all the regions go haywire. I remembered seeing this video come out not too long ago so I searched for it. Just what the doctor ordered! I was about to print each track and replace the multiple regions per track with one solid region. That was the “hack” that my brian finally arrived on, but this is much easier. Anyone wondering why the tempo even matters if it’s just a mix session, there’s still editing involved which is much easier to do to a grid. Thanks again Chris for helping me on my Logic journey!

Thank you soooo much my friend you are a gift! I was stuck with an audio guitar track recording I could not copy or move in the track and it was because I had the flex ON!!! Jeezzzz I wasted 2 hours trying to figure out what was going on... And then I googled you and voilà! I am now trying to change the key signature of my project because I have to use a capo on the guitar otherwise. Any videos on that topic?

How do I change the tempo of a single Apple beat loop? My project is 80 bpm. I want to import a 170 bmp beat AS IS. But no matter what I do, the beat loop conforms to the bpm of the project. I try to change the loop bpm back to 170 but the whole project changed to 170. Urrrrrrgh! I didn’t see a solution to this in your video.

When I tried this, I changed from 103 bpm to 77 bpm and the regions move to positions that over lap, no longer in the same arrangement. How can I over come this?

Okay I might not be understanding this correctly. I think I get the smpte lock, it basically locks your regions at the tempo it was originally even if you increase it, is that correct? If so, my question is, in what situations would you need to increase the tempo of the project yet keep the same tempo locked that it was playing at before? Like if you want to keep the original tempo on the existing regions and then create new MIDI at the higher or lower tempo, so it switches from one tempo to another on like a breakdown or something? For example creating a song at like 140 and then after the breakdown it drops at an increased tempo of say 170? Or back and forth kind of thing?

So how do you "lock" an audio .wav file to stay at its original recorded speed, always and forever? I don't want it locked to the current grid. I want it locked to it's original self. For example, you have nature sounds playing behind your music. How do you tell Logic, "Just leave it alone, no matter what I do to the project tempo"?

I was sent 15 stems and drag them into a new project. The project was set to the default 120 BPM. When I changed the BPM to 112, it messes up all of the audio regions. Is this normal? There is one midi region in the stems project. Flex time is not on, everything is off.

I had an artist record a song in the incorrect temp to the default Logic tempo at 120 BMP. The Song is actualy 90BMP and I'm wanting to do additonal production on the track, I tried doing the SMPTE lock on the vocals and the beat and putting the BMP to the correct BMP 90, however the vocals and the beat became slowed down. It does not sound like the originial incorrect tempo recording. Anyway to fix this???

Am I right in thinking you used to be able to just go "right click -> lock SMPTE Position" before having to go to "edit" first? I came to this video just to find the option I knew was there and have used for years. I feel like I'm going crazy

That is way too much clicking. Can easily lose inspiration doing all of that. I don’t use abelton but you can just change the bpm and everything changed without effecting the regions position on the timeline. Logic needs to get better with warping audio.
@MahtiGC

if you use logic, there is actually an easier way than this. i left a comment on how to go about changing tempos with Audio and Midi a lot easier if you don’t know how already. it probably is a bit longer than other DAWs but I usually do this stuff in like a minute.
@SoundSignals

you’re like a god with logic pro but wouldn’t it be easier to jus put the audio file that is 100BPM in the project and turn on polyphonic then change the bpm to 70 on the project? And with midi, it automatically keeps with the projects tempo, so changing it wouldn’t impact it, and in order to half or double time the midi, there are midi functions in the piano roll that let you do that. Audio can also be double timed by increasing the bpm without polyphonic on. like a 70bpm sample can be at 140bpm and vice versa. i jus think the sympt lock thing is a longer way.

It’s apples to oranges. He’s showing us how to change the grid tempo, without affecting the region’s speed of playback. You’re discussing changing the region’s speed WITH the grid. A good example is when you record an audio track for a 6/8 song at 140bpm. But then you add some drummer regions and realize the tempo should be 70bpm because you want that slow 6/8 feel. Smpte lock, change to 70, unlock and you’re good to go. Now things like synth arpeggios are going to play slower, synced delays are going to be correct to their note values. Using functions to half time the midi will always be an uphill battle. It’s best to get to the correct tempo, and all that goes smoother.

I think this is more of the situation, where at the beginning of songwriting or composing for video - you don't want to deal with tempo operations until later on in polishing. For me, not always getting the grid ready before improvising music, tends to work more fluidly

Tempo changes are Logic’s weak point. Ableton and Bitwig handle this with no problem, you just change the project tempo and everything works. Logic is the only DAW where this is a problem.
