Used a Model X or new Model Y?
This is a simple vlog but as I’m driving a Tesla model Y and X back to back let me share some thoughts on the pros and cons of each.
I can compare directly the efficiency and what the real world range is too. Considering the model X is 6 years old with 76k how does it fare?
Reality is that the values of each are not too dissimilar so which is the best to get?
Certainly if you need more then 5 seats it has to be the Model X. We only get 5 seat Y’s here but I’ve tried a 7 seater in US and it was laughably small. The X has more space, frunk is bigger and it comes with things like the power doors, air suspension and the big pano windscreen.
The Y is great for efficiency and charging.
Which do you prefer? My thoughts are in this video.
Thanks for watching!

I put on 100,000 miles on my Performance Model X and it is in the shop and I was given a Model Y Dual Motor. I put on 1,500 miles on the loaner and I have to say - the Y has some really nice upgrades like the screen is super nice and the regen braking seems to be stronger in the Y. But the rest of the stuff - the X just demolishes. I don't like how so much of the screen has the FSD and other menus on top of the navigation map. And even though the Y is quick - the X Performance (and of course Plaid) is brutal. So much fun. And little things like the high beams coming back on. The X has this nice graduation of the low to high... the Y is just one or off. And of course the air suspension and the falcon wing doors.... AND... those automatic doors on the X are SOOOO nice. One doesn't know how awesome they are until you don't have them.

The X makes you feel pampered with the auto closing doors and the 6 seater feels like there is ample room for families. I got rid of it because it wasn't suited as my daily driver (quick trips) and short range. I miss it hugely, but may get another one if we move and have a more modern garage. A Victorian house did not plan for falcon wings. I also felt the Y was significantly slower when you mash the pedal. The MX is a supercar.

I took my Model X to get serviced and they gave me a Y for loaner and when I got back in my Model X it just made me realized how much I missed my X, so I would have to say I prefer the X over the Y…

What did you miss about your X? I feel the opposite when I leave my 3 for a day for an X - I miss the simplified dashboard, horizontal center display, one pedal driving, phone as a key, and faster charging (I know the new ones have those things, referring to older Xs)

I had a loaner Model X (2018) 100D for a week when my Model 3 SR+ had some warranty cosmetic work done. I was totally smitten! If I could afford a Model X, that's what would be on my drive. However, my wife bought a Model Y and it is a totally different car to both the X and the 3. Decisions, decisions.... the Y is more practical than the 3, the 3 is more driver focused than then Y but the X is just a wet fish slap in the face to the rest of the auto industry. It is a Plovers Egg, outrageous and over the top in places but I think it is still the best of the best and everything else has to measure up to the X.

2019 X to 2022 Y here. Really miss the automatic front doors on the X, and the comfortable air suspension! Do NOT miss the falcon-wing rear doors. Found those to be a hassle and clumsy and cumbersome. They whacked things in the garage a couple times. On the Y I LOVE the big glass roof, normal sun visors, normal windshield. One of the biggest things though, to me, is now I can have a roof rack to carry things! Also love the hidden and more effective dash and vents. The Y also feels more futuristic and open to me.

Truly a man of refined tastes! That would be ideal! The falcon wing doors while unique are problematic in cold climes, and the Y (while the 2022+ versions have had the benefit of over 30 revisions to the suspension components and configuration) would definitely have a superior ride with air suspension. I've seen designs for a powered front trunk and air suspension on the Y for 2023 sometime. Can't wait!

I changed from the model x to the y and I'm quite happy about it. As most of my charging is done at home, the free supercharger is actually not interesting compared to the better efficiency of the y. In terms of booth space the y is also more practical than my x 7 seater version, where the size of the booth was limited by the second seat row. My model y is a performance version and I replaced the 21 inches rims with 19 inches rim, which now makes the ride comfort and efficiency even better. All in all I am very happy with the change. Of course the x has some advantages, it remains more comfortable, the driver screen is great and the seven seats come in handy in some situations, but it doesn't compensate the advantages of the y wich I enjoy each time I am driving it. It's more narrow, more efficient, more practical

I took delivery of my Model Y with 19-inch wheels last week, and I agree the ride quality has significantly improved compared with the test Model Y I drove back in February. I also like the new parcel shelf and note Tesla have gone from saying you shouldn't use a tire repair kit to now selling one as an accessory in the Tesla shop. I can't comment on the Model X as I have never driven one, but I prefer my new Model Y to previously owned Hyundai Kona EV and BMW X3. The Model Y feels very sturdy and solid to drive and reminds me of an older Mercedes E Class (pre plastic chrome bling era) I owned, but the Y has much better performance and handling!

Greetings from Aix-en-Provence France. Again a excellent video. I Would love the Model X but really can't justify the price, in Feb 22 I bought the basic Model 3 at 36k euros after the ecological grant. Really loved the car but really missed the practicality of my old Honda CRV and so sold the Model 3 for 48k euros and have now ordered the model Y rwd which in France after the ecological grant costs just 45k euros so altogether very happy with that deal. I have driven every electric suv currently on sale in France of which there are many, but after owning a Tesla for 6 months with all it's equipment every other manufacturer seemed to be playing catch up so I can honestly say that absolutely nothing comes close to the standard range model Y for value for money right now at least here in France as to get even close to the Y every other comparable ev optioned up was at least 10k more expensive and even with the incredible ecological grant's here in France I couldn't justify 10k more for a car with clearly inferior software and of course the Tesla supercharging network is the icing on the cake for me. Thanks again for the great video content as it was you that originally convinced me that the Tesla was the way to go getting my first ev.👍

I have an X and compared to the 3 or Y (which I both ride from time to time), the suspension of the X is far superior even on 22" wheels! On the 3 and Y you feel A LOT compared to the X. Also the X you test is not a Raven refresh; the mid-2019+ Xs are more quiet and drive even smoother due to a new front motor and a new suspension.

We have both the X (June 18) and Y (June 22) , the X is my car and the Y my wife’s, but I do get to drive both, often in one day. The Y is a lovely car and a joy to drive, but the X feels more refined and is definitely smoother on rough roads. When we are out as a family, my wife prefers travelling with our son in the back in the X and of course on long journeys requiring supercharging we always use the X for the free supercharging which has saved me a good amount in 96k miles driving. For quality, the Y has been perfect straight from new with to date no issues, not even a panel gap. The X does have panel gaps, but those don’t worry me, and reliability wise has been pretty good. Only notable problems, the AC failed couple years ago, but that was covered by warranty, while more recently the power steering failed, but Tesla fixed that in under 3 hours the next working day, at a cost of about £200 which is not bad for maintenance costs on a 4-year old car. The X is heavy on tyres, needing replacing about every 20k miles. Don’t know yet for the Y. Both are fantastic cars and I love them both!

Further to my comments below. Aside from the reverberation problem, we loved the YLR so much that when the Y Performance arrived in the UK, we changed our 3P order for one that we took delivery of just before Xmas. Tesla have clearly solved the reverberation problem. Our new YP is just a fantastic, super-fast allrounder. Our dilemma: whether to sell the 3LR Acceleration Boost that we have loved for over 2 years and now treat as a high performance sports car or, sell the X P100D that is a brilliant cruiser/rocket ship, seats 6, has free supercharging and makes European trips just effortless or, should we sell both and get a 2nd YP? I suspect that we might end up dragging it out until the X Plaid arrives to try.

@kent It’s simply because of efficiency. The model Y is of course much, much cheaper (at least here in Norway), and you get a lot more range for the money due to a more efficient drivetrain/ drag coefficient combo. Personally I also prefer the interior (storage and phone chargers in the MY/M3). I was doing a similar comparison back in 2020 when I got my Model 3 Long Range. I was comparing to a Model S 90/100. The adaptive suspension on the S/X is excellent. Also being a heavier car, the S rides better/smoother and is quieter. But make no mistake, the physical size of parking an S is noticeably different than parking a 3. Obviously I ended up with a 3 which cost me about $15,000 less than a used S that could get 289 miles of range (my 3 gets 322) at the time. After 2 full years of Model 3 ownership, I could see getting a refreshed 2022 S and enjoying the new screens, yoke, and other updates. But I couldn't be tempted by a 2021 or earlier S.

We bought a MYLR 19inch rims - 1st batch into UK - Feb 2022. Loved the car. Hated the low booming resonance in the cabin from the harsh suspension. Gave 1/3rd of passengers headaches & nausea. Tesla said "It's a characteristic of the car" swop it thru' Black Horse Finance. BHF refused. Sold in July for price we paid Tesla. Big disappointment. Bought 2017 Model X P100DL 21kmiles (heated + cooled seats, free supercharging & connectivity for life + 3 year 3rd party warranty - crazy if you don't IMHO). Just been thru month of hassle of MCU 2 & CCS & Radio upgrades =£3.5k (vital so negotiated off purchase price) + front drive shafts + door sensor =£1.5k (vibration on accel & Falcon Wing door wouldn't raise fully - fixed under 3rd party warranty) + windscreen - wiper blade had collapsed & v badly scratched it (on insurance @ excess £115) =£2.2k. Ended up with brilliant, 6 seater car that family love, is so easy to load grandkids into child seats, goes like snuff, fun doors, air suspension, can cross Europe for free @ 3miles/kWhr (who cares?) vs her Model 3LR accel boost @ 4m/kWhr on home solar & paid supercharging. What's not to love? Now it's reported that Tesla have improved MY suspension issue. But, can't persuade Her Indoors to change to a Model Y - she says "No need now. You've got a Model X family car & I'd rather still have a very fast sports car" So, cancelled Model X Plaid reservation & she's got Model 3 Perf on order instead. Hassle to go through but, worth it.

The detailed navigation in front of you, with the overview on the centre screen. And the extra info on the drivers clocks, efficiency etc. And the S is an excellent mile muncher. My wife and I took a test drive in the 2022 MYSR twice, and the M3LR twice (both on order). Both M3 and MY were super comfortable but the M3 had a much lower ride position compared to the MX. The MY ride height was 10% lower than the MX, so it wasn’t as big a difference. The M3, bring smaller, handled extremely well and was nimble … like the MX. Road noise in the MY was surprisingly better than on your previous reviews. I agree that the MX was cozier and more luxurious than the new M3 and MY, which on the plus side, have their impressive minimalistic design. On both MYSR test drives, my ears felt pressure & wanted to “pop” (like when rapidly ascending in a lift or in a plane), even when the car was stationary. My wife felt slightly nauseas in the MY. We don’t understand why, but need new EVs to replace the hybrids, so we are still going ahead with our M3 and MY purchases. No way in the foreseeable future are we selling the MX … 🙂.

Excellent, honest, objective, comparison as ever. With free supercharging I imagine the battery pack has had many more supercharging sessions than home AC charging...but you didn't say? Tesla warn that battery pack degradation is increased in line with the number of fast DC sessions used. Any chance of a quick update on that idea especially as you have access to other model X's which don't have free DC charging so presumably would use a higher (and more normal?) percentage of AC home charging?

I am returning a leased 2021 Model Y that I leased as a placeholder vehicle for a Cybertruck. WIth the long delays on the CYbertruck, buying a new Model Y was my first option. Then, I drove a used Model X and found a 2018 100D with 48K miles on it on the Tesla Used website for $42K OTD and it included HW 3 and FSD and a 1 year warranty from Tesla.. That car sold for $150K + in 2018 and for less than 1/3rd of the original price. I'm tall and really like the size for the few times a year I need a 6 passenger vehicle. I still want a Cybertruck and will sell the X at some point in the future. I think I will do better on the resale market selling the unique Model X vs a used Y which are very common here in CA. In any case, I'm happy with the move and have essentially better utility and ride/feel in the X and I still feel like looking back at it as I walk away. It looks great inside and out but came with a couple of door dings so I don't have the worry about that ... 🙂

I think it would have been worth pointing out that all the settings, from the position of the air vents, temperature, general driving preferences all change to each individual drivers preferences in exactly the same way that other manufacturers change the position of the steering wheel and electric seats in other cars. This means that once set to your liking you are far less likely to need to adjust things like the air vents in the first place. In fact, I think the only thing you might have to change when you get in the car after your partner has driven it is the rear view mirror.
@OZZl3
@OZZl3 Жыл бұрын
I usually don't keep the air vents the same way, sometimes I want to cool my legs, body or head more than the rest of my body, many cars when you have more airflow in the upper region there is a vent that keeps blowing on my hand(s) on the steering wheel which makes it too cold after a while also, so I am constantly changing settings, not every minute ofc, but that one setting for me would suffice is a no :P

I drove an early Toyota Yaris for an extended time, which has a central display. It's a non-issue. People make a problem of it because they want to. It's a thing that you'll worry about if you're determined to. The truth is, don't worry about it. You'll get used to it super easily. That said, what a lovely luxury from the MX. Is it better overall than its sibling MS? Obviously depends on your preferences.

I had a 2017 Model X, and now have a 2022 Y LR and 2022 Model X LR. So I’m a one-man focus group. The Y is more nimble and sporty. It’s a much more basic design versus the X. I equate the interior of a Model 3/Y with a no-nonsense 80s German car. The new X is much more luxurious. It’s also quicker and a better roadtrip car because of the space, the back seat entertainment and adaptive suspension. And I love how the driver’s door closes when you put your foot on the brake. If it were the choice between a new Y or a used X, I’d go for the Y because it offers the newest tech hardware. But if I were to choose between a new Y or a new X, the new X is very seductive and worth the premium.

Honestly, I think the Y is a better designed vehicle. For how much bigger and less efficient the X is I would save the money and get a Y. If they ever bring air suspension to the Y it will make it even better. I think the other issue I have is with how much larger on the outside the X is, there doesn't seem to be that much more room inside. Either way, test drive both and pick your ride. Both are great vehicles to go from A to B, just do the math and understand cost to own/drive vs anything else on the road including non-EV options. At the end of the day its still just a vehicle.

220 miles range isn’t great. And the 100D in my experience doesn’t do much better, maybe another 20 or 30 miles at most. I owned one for 3 years. Also it’s perhaps too big for British roads. It is a very big car, too big for the country lanes where I live which is why I sold it in the end. But very relaxed to drive on motorways and dual lane carriageways, so long as range anxiety doesn’t kick in. The driver display and more normal controls are a definite advantage over the Y, and free charging would take a lot of the sting out of the low range with fuel and energy prices through the roof these days. Plus of course the falcon wing doors are super cool and surprisingly practical.

Nice video. I've got a late 2018 Model X which has free non transferable supercharging. I've aways said I'll keep it until it breaks due to the free supecharging, but to be honest the amount I'd save in home charging of the Model Y due to it's better efficiency would probably negate that. The one thing I don't want to give up though is that front windscreen. I love it and wheneve I get in any other car it just doesn't feel as nice without that sense of space and light that the windscreen provides.

I had the same quandry. I bottled it 3 years ago and got a M3 RWD SR+ instead of the AWD. The RWD shoves your forward and the AWD pulls you forward - it is quite a different thing. Even the RWD goes like stink, I put a very annoyed Bentley Continental coupe back in his box last Thursday. Range? I have never had range anxiety but I do drive like a Monk with his right foot missing (so my wife says). If you keep it below 60 and don't race Bentleys then my M3 SR+ is easily capable of 290+ miles in summer minus aircon. The only other thing, and to my mind the most important thing - is I did not realise there are OTHER DIFFERENCES with the SR+. For example, it did not have an active Sub woofer (and it cannot be retrofitted) plus not all the speakers are wired up though there are kits to rectify. It may not have things like front fog lamps (probably just a a differentiator). So I suggest you check the full list of differences! I also suspect the MY RWD will come with LFP and not LION batteries. There are pluses and minuses to this - but I may not be correct about this. Whatever version you opt for - it's going to be MIGHTY! Good Luck!

Great video as always Richard! Issues with the battery pack or reliability on the electrical systems on the X would be my concern. The big difference I see for the Y vs a used X, is that if you’re willing to wait, you can get a brand new Y for the same cost as a used 75 or 90 X, and the Y has full warranty. I can’t imagine the falcon wing doors are cheap to fix if something goes wrong for example.

@@mwahahaha I believe they were doing a free replacement or fix if the screen edge went yellow, due to heat and the glue on the screen detaching. Many people paid 2k to have the latest computer and screen. I would love a model X 6 seater. A x90D or a x100D would do me, but I would need the free SC and if it did not come with that than a modem version of model X. I want the MY with the old style MX dash assembly( non-yoke wheel, both screens, etc.), without the structural battery( I don't wanna deal with failing inspection, cuz of some crack in a part that costs 20k € to replace and 30 day limit to get it done until it becomes illegal to drive), and make the rear more boxy( so one doesn't have to be a kid or midget to fit in the back comfortably and for more practical boot space) infact just replace the whole body with a van for maximum practicality, cuz IDC what it looks like. It's not like I'm gonna have/want to spend more than 10s looking at it every time I need to use it anyways. :)

Biggest problem are the seats. They are narrow and short in addition to lacking ventilation like you get in old cheap cars like Ioniq etc. Second biggest problem is the lack of regen level adjustment. Several other cars gives you the choice between 0, 1, 2, 3 regen level. Third is the wiper adjustment is on the screen. The auto function is not good enough as it is too sensitive, I have to touch the screen the whole time when it rains. Miss the handle for that. Fourth is the anoying sounds it makes all the time when using cruisecontrol and other silly sounds. Also the VESS should be different, or have a choice to change. Lastly the dampers could be softer and more comfortable. Part from that it's quite ok even though it would be good to have a display with some of the info in front of the steering wheel. The stupid wood lookalike laminat can be covered.

Well, I picked and have a new Model Y long range vehicle. Right now I would not go with used EV vehicles. They may be good, but preferred my new vehicle. My model Y now has the HW4 and newer qual cameras. I also wanted dual motor AWD and the nice hatchback style vehicle. I didn't need 7 seats for my Model Y. I charge mainly at home, so Supercharging is a mood point for me. The model X bat winged doors really don't impress me and they are only for the back seat passengers, not on the drivers doors. The thing with used EV vehicles, we are always wondering how well the vehicle charges up and what mile ranges we would get being used. Not sure of what we are getting being used and having allot of miles on them. Thanks for the video and take care.
