Funny how , less than 10 seconds into the video, the first thing I notice is the Star Trek logos in the background. That's already deserving of a like! But I might be biased.

I think Chris Salomone at Four Eyes Furniture did a criss cross dining room table a couple years back; I've done criss cross legs on a number of high-touch pieces and they have all held up. Fantastic work, thanks for the video :)

I love this. My father loved making things out of walnut. His favorite finish was Tungoil. He was partial to Formby’s. He’s been gone a few years and this was a little nostalgic for me watching you apply the oil. Love the table.

Marc, I am only subbed to a few woodworkers on KZfaq, and you are one of those few. This is top notch professional quality work. Your skills keep advancing and your builds get more complicated in reflection of that. To top it off, you designed this yourself. Outstanding, as always!

I LOVE this piece! Years ago I brazed together the iron sides of an old Singer sewing machine treadle base into a + shaped base for my kitchen table, topped with a circle of slate I cut from a pool table center slate. It has a similar twisty springiness, but nothing too bad. To my eye, those inserts looked like the type designed for softwood, with aggressive toothy threads. Hardwood inserts usually have smooth threads that shouldn't fight you so much going into walnut. But now that they're installed, it doesn't really matter for your purposes. I'm sure they'll be more than strong enough.

Great table. Love the design. I have a coffee table in a very similar design I'm going to make soon (by soon I mean hopefully this year). The only difference is I'm going to change the x design to a boxed x so there is more stretcher support to reduce the side to side wobble. I'll report back if it works!

Good morning from Texas, Marc. I built an octagon poker table a while back with criss-cross legs similar to yours. I also wondered about the rigidity of the assembly, so I added criss-cross stretchers about 10" below the top. Still out of the way and they added more strength to the build. That walnut is "real purty". Thanks.

You haven't seen a criss-cross table before? I have. I built a 6' x 2'6" sapele criss-cross coffee table when I was at school, back in the 1960s I made it that way because I was too lazy to cut all the M&T joints required for a traditional four legs and four aprons design :-) . But my laziness paid off because the finished table looked great. In my view, much nicer than a traditional design. Of course, back then there were no power tools in the school woodwork workshop. No planers, no thicknessers, no mitre-saws, no morticers, not even an electric drill. So any idea that made a handtool job quicker and easier was a good idea!

On your chop saw, you also remove the tenon before raising the blade back up, thereby removing the chance that the blade teeth grab the tenon and tweak it AND your stop block out of position,

Wow, so many backhanded 'compliments' insinuating the crisscross stretcher idea was lifted from 4eyes furniture design. Why do that? Every original piece of furniture shares some part of its design with every similarly functional piece that preceded it. The half lap joint is not unique to any specific person alive today. This is a very nice dining table, thanks for doing the video.

We were given a table of this design, as a wedding present. It is a coffee table sized version and is currently used as a television stand. The relation that gave us it was a woodwork teacher. Ours is oak and the joints are mortice and tenons - no loose tenons. Can't say if they were hand made or there was some machine help. After 50+ years it has a few dings and scratches - but hey - don't we all.

So question, why did you choose to do the tenon cuts on the miter saw vs the table saw? Just curious as in my mind the table saw would be faster.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer Жыл бұрын
Because in my mind, the miter saw is faster. :) A cross-cut at the table saw requires a sled or a miter gauge. The miter saw is already built for a cross-cut. So in my shop, that's faster and easier. But no reason you can't use a table saw if that seems more logical to you.

The English Woodworker has a side table design just like that with bridle joints here on youtube. I copied it to build a dining table which didn't really work. Did the Twist every time someone touched it because the legs were too flimsy for the height. Made a new base and everyone survived. Your design looks really nice!
