It may not have been clear what I was saying about using the fridge on gas when touring. If you plan on visiting a filling station, you should switch the gas supply to the fridge off. However, if you forget this, there is a safety feature that won't allow the fridge to light 15 minutes after the ignition has been switched off. If there is any doubt, switch the gas off. Set on 'auto' the fridge will not run on gas when the engine is running.

Just been reading an article in NZMCA magazine which warns about gas at Petrol stations and being newbies we were going into overdrive with plans of stopping outside of station, to turn off the auto on the fridge in case it lights and us. After watching this video it suddenly all made sense. we have only had our motorhome a few months and whenever we stop I spend time trying to get the fridge working as it just blinks - now I know its not a fault its meant to do that. Brilliant thanks Bob for this gem of information which us newbies just don't know.

As always, a very useful and well-presented video Bob. We’re fortunate, having a relatively small MH (6.5m), that our cab heaters do the job throughout while running. If you have one with closed doors separating areas, having hab heating on during a journey is very handy at this time of year.

Hi Bob, very thorough and informative as usual, thank you. I'll be buying a used Motorhome in the next 12-24 months ready for my retirement. I'm totally new and it'll be my first one. So i need as many tips, suggestions and information as i can, because i'm a bit of a worrier. Yourself and Jenny are extremely experienced and are willing to share that experience. So, yes, definitely keep them coming buddy......along with your regular uploads, i love your channel. Doing a video on maintaining power in the motorhome during the winter if you're not hooked up to a mains supply would be appreciated. Such as Solar panel charging (which would be minimal to zero i imagine), not so much of a problem in the Summer....... So for instance, would i have to drive every day to give me enough power to last the evening and night. Cheers Bob :) x

Thanks for that, I didn’t know you could run the Alde heating whilst travelling. I had accidentally left it on a couple of times and wondered if it was ok. On our MoHo we have the double bottle auto changeover valve, so if a gas bottle gets down to empty it automatically changes to the other. A coloured indicator on the valve swaps over to show which is in use. So as long as you look at this occasionally to check which bottle is currently in use green or red (I have mine set to use the green bottle first) when it shows the red bottle is in use we just refill (we have Gasit refillable bottles) the now empty one. This way we have an uninterrupted gas supply and I don’t have to go out in the middle of the night changing bottles. Good tip about the fridge, I didn’t know about the safety timer. I thought we might have a problem with the fridge because it took so long to swap over to gas when we stopped. I was keeping an eye on it in case it failed one day, but now I know not to panic. Yet another great informative video.

Bob thank you for the very informative tips, as usual. We hope both you and Jenny are keeping well. Having watched many of your vlogs (& subscribed) learning many many things, you are truly the guy to go to on all things motor homes. I appreciate you may have captured some items spread over a number of various vlogs, but may I suggest you do a winter specific edition covering such things as: - Fitting of fridge external covers i.e. when should they be applied Use of winter tank heaters i.e. in cold conditions & only to be used when water systems have a minimum of 25% capacity Items you think very relevant for winter preparedness Also do you generally open the Alde heating safety/drain valve for a couple of seconds every 10 days to allow air cushion expansion to protect the heating system? Keep up the tremendous work. All the best and stay safe Russell & Jo

I thought it was useful. We’ve just sold our Wellhouse Ford transit SWB pop top and put a deposit down on a Devon Colorado, a massive 0.4 metres longer and a high top! We will now have Truama heating so it’s useful to know it can run when we’re travelling, if that’s required on a 5.4 metre van. We’ll also have an underslung tank which I assume is LPG like the Gaslo system in our last van. I wonder if LPG good at very low temperatures? Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 2 жыл бұрын
Propane and Butane are both Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). Propane is what you get in the red Calor Cylinders and as Autogas on the pumps at fuel stations. Butane comes in blue cylinders from Calor. Butane does not produce gas at temperatures around and below freezing, so is unsuitable for all year round camping. So you'll be OK if you have refillable cylinders.

Always useful information. Do you know if I can run my whale heater off the solar as I drive? Thanks Bob.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 2 жыл бұрын
Your heating does not run off solar. The solar is connected to charge your leisure and vehicle battery with electricity when you are stationary. It really depends if your whale heater can run off gas when you are driving. That I don't know.

Hi Bob, one big thing DO NOT DRIVE INTO A FILLING STATION WITH THE HEATING OR FRIDGE RUNNING ON GAS.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 2 жыл бұрын
I thought I explained there is a safety feature that won't allow the fridge to run on gas after the engine is switched off for 15 minutes. Additionally, the fridge cannot run on gas when the engine is running, if it is set to auto energy selection. Yes, it's safer to switch the supply off to the fridge when travelling. Please don't type in capitals, it looks like you are shouting and can it seem quite impolite.
@martinhann9511
@martinhann9511 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @@BobEarnshawMoHo . I think Dan is making an important that filling stations (and service areas) do not allow you to have anything running which has pilot light when you enter them. Therefore, although the fridge will be on 12V and not switch back to gas for 15 mins after turning off the engine with auto selected, the heating (which also has a pilot light) will be active throughout. Although you could argue that the danger is from the pilot light sparking when it tries to light the main flame in the appliance and that should not happen, there is a risk that it could go out for some reason and then re-ignite itself at an inopportune moment. I’m sure it’s for this reason that the rules are so strict. So I think your advice on being able to run your the heating on gas whilst travelling needs to include a warning that it needs to be turned off in advance of going into any filling station/service area e.g. by stopping at a lay-by beforehand. However, this would be difficult to achieve on a long motorway journey or you could easily forget to do it. Re. The point you picked up with Dan on the fridge having the 15 min safety feature. If you listen to the part where you said that it goes on to the 12V after starting the engine, you then jumped ahead to saying there is a 15 min gap before the fridge ignites without saying it was AFTER the ignition had been turned off. It’s obvious when you know it doesn’t happen, but when I first listened to it I understand you to be saying that after 15 mins driving along the fridge would switch to gas as well. Maybe that’s what Dan was thinking when he said don’t drive into a filling station with the heating OR fridge switched on. After saying all this, I also want to say that we really appreciate and enjoy watching all the informative videos you produce and want to give a shout out for Jenny who seems very tolerant at times. It’s helped us to make an informed choice on switching from a caravan to a motor home as well as experiencing the visits to lots of sites which we haven’t yet been to. It often feels like we’ve already been there when we arrive, especially when we happen to occupy the same plot such as number 4 at Ashridge Farm, a few weeks ago! Please keep up the good work. Martin. p.s. apologies for the shouting😉
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 2 жыл бұрын
@@martinhann9511 OK, thanks for clearing that up for me. Ideally, you should not be going into filliing stations with the gas turned on, but that safety feature exists.
