The Frenchies Motorhomies

3 жыл бұрын

It’s that cold cab thing! None of us like it , some of us put up with it , most of us want to fix it , here's a few things and possible solutions i use to try and keep that warm air flowing and staying in the cab area , But first .. a drive in the van to clear the brake discs and top the batteries up.
Here are the links to the products mentioned in the video , please consider subscribing to my channel , it’s totally free and assists me in moving up the ladder enabling me to produce more material , thank you for watching
Mike
Note ... without the need for stating the obvious , an external or internal thermal windscreen cover wouldn’t go a miss & turning your dash vent switch to recirculation rather than having the air coming in from outside and closing all the dash vent flaps may also help (although not so good if your dogs or husband ...or even wife...has flatulent issues 😂 )

It's the same on 2017 vans. Above the vent you showed there was a seam with mastic (@ 21:54), continue that sealant along the seam and don't forget the drivers side. Remove the plastic trims from both foot steps and remove the carpet, lift the battery cover in the floor, if you see a hole feel the draught and seal or tape it (you see day light through many of them). Also remove the trim pieces that cover the bottom of the B pillars, black plastic below the seat belts. Seal all visible seams, with these trim pieces removed you see a hole big enough to put a small hand in, these go down into the sills close the where you replaced the vents, seal those holes too. The drivers side has the converters connectors, stuff some rockwool around here. It took me a couple of attempts to find all these holes but we're pretty draught proof now.

Great video very informative. Our main problem on our Fiat is the draft coming through the actual door handles, during that real bad winter a few years back we were driving through Germany in a -16 plus degree wind chill and our legs were frozen, even with the heater on full blast, the only solution was to cover our legs with fleece blankets!

Great video thanks. Glad we watched because we have a 2020 fiat model so went out to look underneath and saw that we do have a cover plate fitted although it was loose and would of fallen off on our next outing, It is now clicked back in place. We maybe need to stick it in, as it's only done 90 miles so shouldn't be loose unless it wasn't clicked in properly in the first place, we will keep an eye on it. Anyway the answer to your question is yes the newer models do have one😁. Now subscribed😄

What are your tyre pressures sounds like its rattling your teeth. Used to run our Bolero with 65 psi up front. Cold air falls it does not rise so the cold air from the windows and uninsulated roof drops down to your feet. One of the external window covers would help with insulation. I took the surround off the window above the cab looking for water leak and there was a small handful of rock wool in there. Not surprising the front of the cab was cold. The draft you get between the front seats when on the move is similar. You have the heater on so hot air rises. As it rises it brings the cold air from the back between the seats. So you get freezing cold feet. As you mentioned an A Class is much warmer. Far more insulation round the front and heating pipes as well. If you buy one of the foreign motorhomes you can also have the Truma heating on in the back while on the move and it stops all the cold drafts. We don't put anything heavy in any of the overhead lockers. From experience it can makes holes in the hollow worktop if something falls out. Cupboard doors are best left open as is the fridge when in storage.

hello ian really appreciate your input there , superb advice and good tips , sounds like you’ve been doing this a while , it’s always good to know how other people keep warm and what they have learned throughout the years , well done on spotting the cabin noise from the still currently inflated “ summer time pressures “ on my tyres , as we have not been able to get out since early november i haven’t dropped the pressures for winter usage , ( also some noises from sensitive microphones from 2 cameras picking up & adding to the rattles ) so at current i think they are around 70 psi maybe a little bit more for better mpg during summer , ive always been a fan of the continental build quality but not there layouts , i’d love a double floor , internal tanks etc , my girlfriend doesn’t like to be sat in a cab seat to watch tv , as you are aware they are mainly all front lounge & table , and hab door on wrong side so prefers uk vans , thanks for all your advice and points you made and thanks for watching the video all the best mike 👍

@@TheFrenchiesMotorhomechannel Added a couple of tips to your Cleaning the MH video. Had a Swift Bolero for 3 years and it was our first MH. We got rid of it because I was fed up with screwing it back together. The Dealer we used was hopeless and every fault would result in a photo shoot for Swift ( Not available at the weekend ) and then a wait again for a repair. One of the repairs was the small plastic cover on the outside electrical socket above the water tank filler. It cracked and would not stay on. All of a £1 but they had to photograph it and send off the paperwork and wait for Swift to approve the repair before they would even look at it in the workshop. Just downsized to a Carthago 138 A Class to get under the 3.5T limit so don't need a medical and SWMBO is happy driving a smaller MH. Designed for cold climates so it gets warm and stays warm. Double floor with plenty of heated storage. Even the garage is heated. Been out for a couple of trips and now we are just sitting waiting. Lots of sites booked with CAMC for this year so we will just cancel the ones we cannot go to. Happy camping ..

Hi, good Vlog, just found your channel and will subscribe. You are in the same situation as we are, motorhome in storage compound and no-where to go! Debating when to take out for a run and the dilemma of whether what is deemed necessary to me is necessary to others, been 5 weeks now and I worry about deterioration! See from your dash display that you took yours out during the lockdown on New Years Day, think I will do as you do, go alone so less thoughts by others that this is a holiday! Also can show that I have no clothes, bedding, food if I am stopped and quizzed. Agree from other comments that a good, longer run is best but in my book any run is better than none, I have solar like you which should keep battery charged. Just a thought, we take all food out, conscious that any vermin may be attracted to your weetabix, 😀

hi steve thanks for subscribing and taking the time to comment, totally agree difficult times , especially how to make the decision to drive it but the way i look at it is we are protecting our significant investments from harm , i was totally alone in an empty storage yard , there are 1000’s of rule breakers that are doing a lot worse than what i did , we are all year vanners hence the food and clothes in there at all times but yes i agree with the weetabix 😂 , the short drive was because i was conscious of being out for too long otherwise would have been down the motorway nearby , but we had had zero sun for days and i needed to top the batteries up , i think it will be fine if you take yours out ive seen plenty of people out in their vans where i live. , probably all doing the same thing 😂 , i try go down the yard weekly to open the windows air it out etc , as you say it’s a worry about deterioration, hope all this goes away soon and we can all get back out there and enjoy what we all like doing the most , happy camping & thanks for watching the video , much appreciated mike 👍

@@TheFrenchiesMotorhomechannel thanks Mike, I agree with exactly what you are saying. Interesting you talking about fresh air duct and blanking plates. We bought a new 2016 Swift Bessacar and during the first 2 weeks of purchase, before we even got to use it we had what we think was a small rat get into the van in the area between where the cab joins the habitation area. This resulted in it chewing through both seat belts and numerous wiring and then it fled, never to be seen. It did over £2000 worth of damage and was very distressing. Swift eventually settled out of court as they admitted that vermin guards had not been fitted properly to our van, and we ended up changing it after 18 months. Wonder how many of these draughts in these vans are coming from things not being sealed properly....!!! Take care and I am now catching up with your previous Vlogs, we go to Norfolk quite a bit so am enjoying your site reviews 👍

@@TheFrenchiesMotorhomechannel another problem for m’homes like your and mine is that the floor isn’t insulated so it’s a real problem keeping them warm and damp free during the winter. Nice informative video we are new to motor homing but due to Covid-19 can’t get out as much to get any real experience I’m having to take the motor home out on a run every ten to fourteen days to keep batteries charged up due to tracker and security running the batteries low we will invest in solar but always seem to be in lockdown so taking it out on forty mile round trips. It’s at a secure site we had a call from tracker people to say batteries were low so went there but found they was not enough juice to start the cab but there was a nice couple on the site doing same with there motor home and let us start ours with jump leads they had with them. Oh so great full to them . One question what’s your experience if any on jump packs cheers.

hi steve thanks for watching the video , yes it’s horrible times at the moment and such a shame we can’t all do what we love doing the most in our vans , welcome to the motorhome community , there are connection points for a jumper pack or leads to be used as you may have already seen , it shouldn’t be a problem , although personally , i wouldn’t use one on a newer motorhome , assuming it is new , there’s so many electrical components on these newer vans that could potentially blow if you accidentally hook up the cables the wrong way round , easily done , not to mention an ECU and so on , a solar panel is a great investment , you could always look into using a solar trickle charger that will keep your battery topped up during winter ,

We have a van conversion now with truma , i’d switch back to alde in a heartbeat, no cold spots , boiler takes up less space , heats up water a lot faster , i just found alde so much easier to get on with , only downfall is yes it definitely takes longer to heat up but when it does , everywhere was equal temp that’s what i liked
@richardconstable5441

These do serve a very important purpose, so blocking up these vents will stop the van heating and cooling system from working as effectively. They allow all the forced air from the van heating system somewhere to escape from the vehicle. If you block these the van heater won’t be able draw air into the cab as there is nowhere for it go. If you operate your van heating on recirculate this would be okay though.

thanks for your input richard and very useful information , and i could possibly agree if blocked constantly , but i can only assume fiat did make those blanking panels to serve a purpose , and in my case , cold legs , especially when driving was when i noticed it most , and that panel , once fitted , did the trick , they are supposed to be a “snap” fit but i had incredible difficulty making it fit , hence the tiger sill i ended up using , but if they can be used temporarily e.g a cold winter like we are having now , and removed during summer months , it’s a win win , thank you for watching the video and thanks for taking the time to comment mike

Can't see that blocking this one vent will cause a problem as the forced air from the heater will just go through to the habitation area and then exit via the dropout holes. I assume that these vents were originally put in for when a van has a full bulkhead fitted so not really essential in a coachbuilt.
@GWAYGWAY1
@GWAYGWAY1 3 жыл бұрын
Those are meant for sealed cab models , like the pickups, on a motorhome there are multiple other places for the air to exit. Ordinary vans with a large load space do not need those exits either.
