Today we unbox the Brand New Mercury Rise Torpedo Revolver, or TR50, 15 Joules version - along with its new factory steel pointed darts ammo.
As always we carry out a whole series of tests, from ballistic gel to mannequins, to see how effective this new CO2 powered launcher is, as we also put it side by side with the Original version.
Great visuals, slow morions and good music… all while learning all about this launcher.

You are right about the disadvantages of CO2. Rapid firing or doing a lot of shots, even in a hot Miami spring day, will result in loss of power. But overall, those are both worthy sub-20 Joule options for Less Lethal defense. Thanks for sharing this new one with us.

Thank you so much for another outstanding video. I have the 11 joule HDR50, and it is very powerful, I made the mistake of shooting it in the house without proper backdrop, and I missed the target and the Aluminum ball went through the wall, with that said, the only thing I like about the Torpedo Revolver is the longer magazine to use longer type ammo. Thank you for bringing such excitement to the arr-gun world! Take care now my friend!

Desperately wishing there was a spring powered version of something like this. Would be slower in terms of follow-up shots, but would solve the freezing problem
@MichaelWhite-cx4ho
@MichaelWhite-cx4ho Ай бұрын
"Freezing" is not really a problem in terms of being able to rapidly launch six pepper or riot balls against an attacker. In fact, the Umarex HD shotguns will launch their 16 rounds with no freezeups, no problem! I think Miami was being gracious in offering a hypothesis as to why the new 15j Mercury Rise did not "blow away" the older version in this limited testing. I am quite sure the folks at Mercury Rise are already preparing a response; one that will hopefully involve a rematch involving Miami and the gnomes!
@houselightkell

@@MichaelWhite-cx4ho the 'icing problem' (as i like to call it, purely for the sake of making an outdated Marvel reference) is really only one motivation for using a spring. The other being: it's kinda a pain to repeatedly buy more and more non-reusable co2 tanks. Unlimited practice time would be cool

But if size does really matter, I take out my HDs 68 lol! I really do get a kick out of you playing yourself in your intros, hahaha, even better the accents! Well I finally made it down here brother, nice place in Jensen Beach, and loving it! One sad thing is my van does not fit in my carport, too tall. Both guns performed similarly, but your explanation as to why this happened was very interesting. Ottimo video come sempre!!

I would've liked to see a break in the video between each of the guns' ballistic gel tests though. Like shoot the 6 from the OG, then say "okay let's try the 15 joule model now" rather than just put them all back to back. The results were similar enough I thought you were just blasting with the same gun 12 times lol

wow my brother the measure board under the gel block has never been done before ,that i know , being the modder and awesome inventor i am makes me kindda of jealous ,lol , pure genius my ol friend !!! WOW !!! ...... also another important question , do you saturate the marker with pure 100% silicone oil before shooting . before my testing , i will put in a few drops in before i slip the 12 gram canister in that way i know its well lubricated , have you ever noticed the second shot being more powerful than the first , this happens because of the lubrication, the ammo goes through easier when lubed !!! . FYI , this is not advisable to do in real firearms though , the excess oil or grease in barrel can become an obstruction , and at the very least catch fire and detonate , just like higher powered air guns but worst !!! in all my years/decades of testing , i never thought one drop of oil on top of co2 powerlet was enough ! i do this for long term storage also , that way mt LTL marker is well lubed and ready for ACTION !!! LOL what another great show my most awesome brother !!! LOVEYAMAN !!!!

I prefer more lethal rather than less lethal when it comes to home defense, but I understand that not everyone has that option for one reason or another. A disclaimer does need to be made that even though it may be legal to own these, it may not be legal to use the more lethal projectiles, as such, it is likely going to be cheaper to ask a lawyer ahead of time than hire a lawyer should the police/DA decide that even though it was legal for you to own these guns, it is not legal for you to fire some of these projectiles at a human, even if it's a criminal breaking into your home. There is another challenge with these guns for self-defense - they look like toys. This means that a criminal is more likely to call your bluff and force you to shoot him, which also means that checking with a lawyer ahead of time is VERY important. Hmm, you know what - if you can afford to, do an interview with a criminal defense lawyer or a gun rights one and see what sort of input they provide - that would make a good video. If you can't afford it, then reach out to the various KZfaq lawyers and see if one of them would be interested in doing a compilation video with you - I will recommend Tom Grieve as he focuses on gun rights and might find this interesting enough to say yes. Pepper balls - should test those on ballistic gel with some cloth over it as humans aren't as hard as a plastic manakin, meaning they might simply bounce off rather than burst. Should have done the chrono on the darts, or also done them, since I'm sure that's the ammo most folks interested in these guns are going to use. I'm thinking you also should have done a meat target with the darts - maybe a chuck or rump roast with a cheap tee shirt over it - just something cheap so that we can see how they penetrate meat since clear ballistic gel does NOT simulate human tissue, instead, it's only purpose is to allow you to see wound cavities and other effects the projectiles create. In fact, you should probably add a meat target to all of the videos for air guns which are intended for anything other than knocking soda cans down - adding ten to twenty bucks to the cost of each video shouldn't hurt. Do you hunt? If so, then set up a Patreon channel as well so you can add hunting videos as well as earn a few extra bucks as while you have been given/loaned some nice guns, the ones you're buying are not cheap. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
@AirgunAlley
@AirgunAlley Ай бұрын
Hi Sean, as always thanks for your well thought input. I do put a disclaimer in every video which basically invites everyone who watches and is interested in owning/shooting the products they see - to check their local laws. As for the ballistic gel, I disagree with you. Ballistic gel does indeed resemble human tissue, like muscle, and on top of that it also gives you the nice wound channels and expansion visual effects. I would probably lose more viewers than gaining them if I used pieces of meat in my videos, or maybe not. Regardless, it’s not my style. And no I don’t hunt. Quite the contrary, my dream is to raise enough money with KZfaq to create wildlife sanctuaries…. but, that’s a whole different story ;)
@AirgunAlley
@AirgunAlley Ай бұрын
Oh and I appreciate the lawyer idea! It’s a great one. The thing is that A) laws change almost by the county, not even by State! And B) airguns are such a gray area, I think it would be nearly impossible to give out any sort of information that would be universally practical and helpful
@seanfoltz7645
@seanfoltz7645 Ай бұрын
@@AirgunAlley FBI standard ballistic gel, yes - not clear gel though - that's purely for showing bullet impacts. Wasn't suggesting ditching the gel, instead, just adding meat - Paul Harrell, the god of guntubers, uses meat targets and no one complains. If you want to create a wildlife sanctuary then you're going to have to either learn to hunt or pay people to hunt for you because wildlife management and population control requires hunting. Perfect example was Rosetree Park when I lived in Pennsylvania - they had an annual deer hunt until folks who opposed hunting stopped it. With no hunters or natural predators to keep the deer in check, the population exploded, so it was only a surprise to the folks who banned the hunt that the first harsh winter killed 9 out of 10 deer in the park due to starvation. Hunting in the US isn't like Europe - here we mostly hunt for food - back in Pennsylvania as a kid, it was the norm for our family to eat wild game for two to three months out of the year as dad harvested deer, turkey, pheasant, ducks, geese, rabbits and hogs. While I don't get to hunt down here as much as I'd like to, I can fish and fish the wife and I catch are our protein for upwards of a week at a time when they're biting. Florida's wild hogs are delicious too and you don't need a permit or license to harvest them, so next time you're in the Everglades with a larger caliber air gun, should you see one, put a slug through his head, make sure to at least remove the organs, stuff a few bags of ice into him and then find a butcher so you and your family can enjoy the best pork you've ever eaten.

@@AirgunAlley No way of knowing without actually asking one, plus, he can likely at least give general advice in addition to regional. Lawyers do pay attention to legal things outside of their area since they could leak over and affect them and I can't imagine that there haven't been quite a few instances of folks using air guns for self-defense under a whole host of circumstances and legal situations, so at the very least the lawyer could share "Well in case X in state Y this happened..." Remember, while people do appreciate consistency, there are only so many air guns and things you can shoot with them before things start getting monotonous, hence the reason you want to include videos on related things. Like when you shared what it takes to get started with the pump and back up cylinder - that actually deserves its own video so that folks can go back and reference and share it with others without having to try to remember exactly what video it was sandwiched in the middle of. Do some tests of different air pumps and back up cylinders as well so that you can officially recommend a best cheapest and best overall. Same thing when the gun blew up on you - here's what went wrong and here's how to prevent it - that's another good video. Air gun maintenance/cleaning and if it doesn't violate youtube standards, how to "tune" them and adjust the PSI output. How's about a DIY home range video - show us how you keep from shooting your neighbor's dog and breaking their windows. Test different sorts of plywood and other materials for use in backstops. Score yourself some air gun targets and review them for us so we know what ones work and don't work, how fun they are to shoot and maybe we don't even know they're out there. And on that topic, do some research on Tannerite - nothing like a garden gnome packed with a pound of the stuff blowing up to gain some clicks - just watch some videos of Tannerite going wrong first so that you don't hurt yourself. Remember, while you do want to stick to your focus on air guns, you can still do related videos like the suggestions above, along with other stuff which I might not know to suggest due to not being as deep into the hobby as you are.

I cannot understand the manufacturer's reasoning regarding the puny +4 J increase in kinetic energy (after seeing the chrono test - the real life difference is 1-2 J???)?! If this is not related to some legal boundary, this second version should have, at least, 30 J (30 J will pierce pepper balls regardless of the surface you shoot, i.e., a soft winter jacket). If I take my research into consideration, the minimal kinetic energy necessary to stop the majority of (human) attacks with the KINETIC round is 40 J. Police use 60-80 J (riot balls: rubber on the metal in.68 cal.). I wonder why people who are paying the very same police cannot legally own something similar? Well, I think we all know the answer to that question...
@JohnD6280
@JohnD6280 Ай бұрын
Hence the word 'Police'. And i agree, since most of us have guns more powerful than the police anyway, but since anything for the 'police' is regulated and controlled, you can see the issue as to why that level has not been reached. The nail that sticks out, gets hammered. P.S. Umarex TR50 upgraded barrel and valve along with the Devastator rounds is a very good package. Shoot to damage, not to pepper or tickle.

@@AirgunAlley Yes, but they have, unfortunately, failed. 4 Joul difference is nothing. Successful self-defense with kinetic rounds requires at least 40 J of energy. The police use.68 cal, 60-80 J launchers. I would like to see, at least, a 40 J affordable launcher (under 250 USD) in .50 or .68 cal. Heck, this is a great tip for the manufacturer what we like to see and own! Cheers!

@@Hebesgugl oh I totally agree with you! However there is another factor that must be considered: (strangely) in Europe each country has its own limits in regulating these things. Most countries don’t allow anything higher than 7,5 joules. Others I think it’s 16 joules. That’s why it’s hard for them to market anything stronger. Those would only sell in the US, a country where most people are like “why buy a 40j airgun when I can buy a real gun….” This is why I think they try to raise the bar joule by joule 😂

Yeah, I'm aware of it! I'm from Croatia, and we don't have any limitations (yet) on air/CO2 launchers. My point was that the people are fooling themselves into thinking they could defend themselves with 10-15 J launchers. Using pepper balls could do the trick, but those are highly unreliable (regarding the effect on humans, especially those under the influence), and they are only viable for outdoor use. The tyrannical governments are very keen to limit the defense capabilities of its people who are paying their fat salaries! That's why the US Gov. is now saying that ILLEGAL immigrants could buy a gun just like a regular US citizen could!!! That tells me that we need to prepare to defend our loved ones with everything we can get! Best!

So basically both the new and the old, along with the Umarex HD50 are trash from the factory. They're only worth a damn when heavily modified.

Well, I will never accept money to review a gun. But I would be very happy to get sponsorships, yes! Making these videos is A LOT of very HARD work - so of course it would be nice to be properly remunerated for it….
