After watching tons of reviews and handling all 20 ga semi options at or under $1k, my wife chose the Viper G2 in 2022. It has been through two seasons of dove and quail, in addition to some clays and lots of pattern testing. Hers is a camo version. It has always functioned 100% with 1oz loads, but definitely did require probably 5-7 boxes of 1oz loads to reliably cycle all 7/8oz loads. I expected some break in for target loads so it wasn’t a big deal. The factory chokes are pretty cheap to be expected, albeit “functional”, however Carlson’s have greatly improved pattern performance. The qualities that she has come to appreciate are the light weight, low recoil due to the gas operation, and the “soft touch” furniture. We did have to adjust the stock using shims, so I’m glad TriStar includes them. I bought an MCarbo Mossberg SA20 (same gun as the tristar, just re-branded) trigger spring kit to reduce pull, but after a couple hundred rounds combined with cleaning/lube, we didn’t feel the need to swap springs; the trigger is lighter and smoother now than when new. The two criticisms are from an ergonomics perspective. The first is we would like a larger safety. She has missed it when birds flush. The second, is more milling of the loading port. The 2022 20ga has a tight loading port (not atypical for 20 gauges). Overall, I would give it a thumbs up rating and a good bang-for-buck hunting shotgun.

I have the 20ga wood. Had it since 2019 and I carry it for mostly pheasants and rabbits and turkeys(with after market choke). I pheasant hunt in wis, Iowa, MN, and SD. I hunt them usually 50 plus days a year. I love that gun. It's been in the dove field multiple times burning 100 shots plus days shooting only light load and it's never hiccuped.

I have the regular Viper G2 silver edition in 12G. It's been a fantastic shotgun for me. I am not a competitive shooter, just shoot very casual sporting clays on the weekends. The Vipers do require a box or two of high power shells for break in before regular shooting. I find the piston and mag tube do get pretty dirty, but I clean it with Hornady One Shot and it leaves a dry lube film, and makes it soooooo much easier to clean later on. I think for what I paid back in 2014 or 15, I definitely got my money's worth out of the gun. I usually take a 100rd bulk box of shells with me shooting once or twice a month, April-October, so it's had some shells thru it. Still looks almost new, and the wood is gorgeous. It gets quite a few compliments. Since I am not a pro, the fact that it isn't the fastest doesn't bother me. I do agree with your assessment in the other video where you had the youth model, the bolt release button is too small.

I bought a Viper G2 20 ga for my wife and a Viper G2 12 ga for my son in law to introduce them to sporting clays. Both great guns. 20 ga needed some breaking in to cycle light loads. Since then no problems with either gun. Very good guns for the money. Last year I bought my wife a Syren L4s sporting which is a great gun but pricey 🤑. Son in law still shooting Viper G2. I shoot Remington 1100 and V3. I think the Tristar Viper G2 is the best gun for the money out there at this time. Highly recommend them.

I have 2 Tristar viper G2 (not the pro) 410 bronze and 28ga chrome.. I love both of them.. I shoot the 28ga extremely well on sporting and trap and even hunting... Crushed lots of chukars and pheasants with it.. and just went Dove hunting on opening and just was smooth and lethal with it.. I love both of them tbh and I am getting the 12ga and 20ga Pro next.. 12ga maybe next week.. Can't wait to take it and break some clays with it.

Gun quality by price and manufacturer makes me laugh. I’ve bought Fabarm XLR5, Beretta 692 and a Blaser F16. All 3 had to go back to the factory. The Fabarm made 3 trips. After that I sold it with full disclosure! Beretta was doubling and Fabarm had trigger issues. Best service was from Blaser. They did a trigger update and I kept it and love it. Beretta went down the road. Any and I mean any gun can be a problem child!!!

I bought a G2 security model in about 2015 from a buddy. I paid $350 for it and he never fired the gun it was new in the box. Was worrried about support because Tristar was not well known then. lol. Found out they are located 5 miles from where we both live. They spent an hour showing me how to break it down and clean t and since he never registered it they let me register it and gave me full warranty coverage. They are first rate with me and the gun shoots everything and the cycle rate is faster than a FN SLP. Great gun, best gun purchase I ever made. While I was there I bought the 28" bird barrel for it for $150. So mine has a 20" security barrel and a 28" bird barrel.

I have this gun in the silver, 20 gauge. Out of the box it wouldn't cycle anything. I had to completely disassemble it and de-burr various areas. It cycles now heavy to medium loads reliably, but will still hangup occasionally on lighter loads. That will probably get better as I break it in more.
@VKZ24
@VKZ24 11 ай бұрын
I have the same one as @jayscott1380, nd had the same issue. Wouldn't cycle Federal 1210 fps target loads. According to the manual, it should cycle 1210 fps loads. I took it to my gunsmith where he could find no problems so he tried some Winchester 1300 fps loads with no issue. Thinking it was a break-in issue, I finished off 25 of the Winchester 1300 fps loads, and switched back to the Federal. No dice. Still wouldn't cycle. By accident I tried a box of Remington 1210 fps loads and went through 50 with no problem. Not sure if it's now broken in or what, but it works like a champ now. Funny thing is my wife has the older Viper G2 Sporting, and it's never had an issue right out of the box with any 20 gauge loads.

Gun just might not like those shells. I had an old Remington 870 that would not cycle Winchester AA shells in 12 gauge. It’s a pump and it would hang up all the time using those shells but everything else ran fine. Not sure why but could just be something it just doesn’t like.

Clean it and clean it again, if you buy one. Get a box or 2 of high brass. Run them through it. Clean it again. I bought one for a back up and used on a couple of dove hunts. It’s not light and I wouldn’t want to carry it all day. It will not hold up to abuse. Plus, do not screw the fore end cap on too tight or it will crack the fore end. Too be honest, save a little longer and get the Mossberg 940, Winchester SX4 or Beretta A300 Ultima. All shotguns have little issues. Get what feels best to you

For an ideal fit, the butt of the shotgun is fully seated in the pocket of your shoulder with the come of the stock making solid contact just below your cheekbone, with your eye looking straight down the rib. Since I have a long neck...or long distance from shoulder pocket to cheekbone, I often need to decrease the drop of shotgun comb...making the stock higher. @@TargetFocusedLife being 73 yrs old one can correctly say I'm "old school". When I started shooting shotguns there were very few adjustments in our price range. You mentioned "the pocket of your shoulder" which is fine today, however we learned to mount the gun by pushing it into our view of the target then bringing our shoulder to contact. Depending on body type sometimes the butt ended up in the shoulder pocket and sometimes not; however the barrel was always aligned with the line of sight to the target. Being "old school" I still shoot this way, however with all the adjustments available today, I tend to make the adjustments according to where the butt ends up attempting to move the butt to the shoulder pocket. This maybe one of those old dog new tricks things.

It took me about 50 rounds to break in, with a few hiccups during that time, but ever since it's been an excellent performer. I've used it for mostly trap shooting, but have had a few very good sessions with it shooting sporting clays. I went to extended chokes also but I can't say whether it was better than the ones that came with the gun as I've never used them. I agree about the fiber optic, but I just removed it. I tend to shoot better looking down a clean barrel anyway. Call me crazy.....Overall for the price, 691.00 after shipping and taxes I have to say it was well worth the money.

Bro, it's garbage!! The Tristar Viper G2 is the gun that taught me "you get what you pay for". If you're not an excellent shot, this gun is terrible. I couldn't get mine to hit point of aim. The sights were terrible. I literally couldn't hit the broadside of a building with it. Once I spent 1k, got a browning silver, suddenly i could shoot - because the SIGHTS were right, didn't matter how i held it. Now I don't pay less than 1k for a gun. Seriously tho, this gun is DANGEROUS. I was shooting and i was WAY WAY WAY off, way to the left. The sights said I was straight ahead. This is how someone gets shot and killed. I only knew because it was "impossible" to miss my target. It was only 5-6 yards away and it was huge, u can't miss that. it caused me to freeze and place and use my head and eyes to look around at where the barrel was actually going. Because that was an impossible shot to miss, all u gotta do it point the gun forward, someone could've been killed. and the sights had me thinking that barrel was straight. very dangerous gun. Never use tristar again. If YOU, dear expert are struggling - the ordinary guy is hurting, and the folks like me who suck, need a well made gun with sights that WORK.

I'm sure I could shoot it well now, because of my technique. But i will NEVER buy a cheap gun again. Not enough R&D spent on it to make me think it's safe and reliable. what if there are issues beyond the one i had, lining up the sights and it looks straight but instead it's way off. that can't happen with a fire arm!!! it's deadly.
