Great review, Matt. I bought a 28ga last year just because of your videos and the Boss Shotshells offering. I ended up with the Mossberg SA-28 pretty much because there was not a Tri-star available at the gun shops around me when I had the $500 burning a hole in my pocket. come to find out, the Mossberg International SA-28 is pretty much the same as the Tri-star Viper G2, with minor differences in the fore-ends and trigger groups. I don't get the bad rap that Tri-Star gets either, as I have shot a number of their different guns now and would take them over most Stoeger options any day of the week. I think it's just because of the Turkish origins. I will say, that if you make a cheap gun in Turkey, you get a cheap gun with cheap gun performance. If you make an expensive gun in Turkey, you get a nice expensive gun with high dollar performance. Their manufacturers' products are only as good as the end consumer will pay for. The Turks are every bit as capable in manufacturing shotguns as Italians and Americans, but you have to be willing to pay for the quality, regardless. The Vipers and their derivatives are an awesome value. I had a similar issue with the Boss shells in my SA-28. My little cousin was hunting with me in NE and used the 28ga, and on one shell the hull stuck in the chamber and the extractor ripped the rim off from underneath it. A chamber hone and or polish should clear this issue up. The Cheddite hulls that Boss uses expand quite a bit and if you have a rough or improperly cut chamber these problems can happen from time to time. Great vid, as always!

@@HighPrairieSportsmen take a .60 cal or 20ga bore swab, attach to a cleaning rod and chuck that up in a hand drill. Cover the swab in super fine polishing compound of your choice and run it in and out of the chamber at about 100 passes a minute from mouth to forcing cone. This should bring your chamber to a mirror finish and keep the Boss and other hot loads from sticking. If the problem persists, you need to buy a chamber hone from Flex research and hone the chamber and fine polish. It’s a test and evaluate solution, but I’ve had success in the past doing so in my firearms with sticky/tight chambers.

@@donniewillis2926 if you are looking to perform a complete hone and polish servicing of your chamber, purchase the 400 grit and 800 grit hones. You'll also want a 20ga bore swab and super fine polishing compound such as Blue Magic or Mother's Mag. Follow the directions that come with the Flex Hones and finish with the polishing compound on the 20ga bore swab. That should provide a highly smooth and clean finish in your chamber.

Picked up a new Pro Viper in 28 gauge last week. At first had a couple of non ejects using low brass shells. Switched over to some high brass, after running about 1/2 box of high thru, switched back over to low brass and just ran the last 23 shots of low brass thru. Not a single hickup. Cycles perfect. It will be my wifes skeet gun. The Viper Pro has beautiful wood. Im very pleased.

You sure killed a lot of birds with the mighty 28. Great review on the gun. I think a lot of people just have the attitude that if it's not a benelli/browning/beretta it's not a good gun. You had an awesome waterfowl season and the 28 did most the shooting with very few hiccups. Glad you figured out it was the ammo and not the gun, a lot of people would blame the gun.

i want the 20 gauge version of that gun . There is just not a lot of 28 gauge shell options, but reloading is another story...Your a great shot tho so that helps! You had an awesome duck season man heres to another year of good content !

I ordered a 16 gauge a few days ago. Have browning, benelli, Remington, retay, and a few others. Looking forward to my tri star. Several locals have 3-4 tri stars each and love them.

Nice video and gun. I justed pick my 28ga tristar up. I bought it just for squirrel hunting. But it will get some time in the turkey woods. Locally at Walmart shells are easy to find. I have been buying the 100 ct AA 28ga 7.5 shot up. I also bought a mec 600 jr mark 5 28ga reloader too. I had to pick my 28ga up last night. Waiting until the weekend too shoot it.

Kudos for this video! I was considering a 20 ga. but decided to get the 12 in this same model. Legs getting older so likely won't use this hunting unless I pony up $100 or so for pheasant- farm shooting. Pheasants fairly scarce here in MI. but within 40 miles there are two places that offer a package of four birds + a guide and dog. You can't beat that with a stick...

I've had my G2 28 for 6 or 7 years. I mainly travel and rabbit and dove hunt with it. I also shoot skeet with it. It did hang up on light loads when I first shot it but I didn't read the instructions. After shooting the recommended 1 box of heavy loads ,I had NO more ejection problems. I clean it once a year. I don't over oil or use thick oils. Rock soil little gun. I've hunted also aside Benelli 28's and I've had way way less jams.

Mine has had issues with jamming/misfeeds, as well as cutting into the hulls. Could just be my gun. I will say Tristar has some great customer service however.

I have the exact same gun, except mine says Mossberg on the side. They are made in the same factory with the same components. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything. The only time I bust out the 12 gauge is for pass shooting snow geese. Other than that, the 28 gauge is my favorite shotgun.

I got the tristar viper 12 ga at the start of this season. Cheaper gun but it was amazing . I love tristar. Some things broke because I hunt hard but awesome. Also first

I just picked up a Viper G2 identical to yours except mine’s in 16 gauge. Shot two rounds of skeet with it last week for the first time and it ran flawlessly with my reloads but with factory federal #6 which is all I can find in my area I had constant FTE’s. I did clean it before shooting & afterwards broke it down completely including removing the trigger group. We’ll try it again at the skeet club this week. I really like it a lot, handles great. It should be well broken in by opening day dove season this year!

6 rounds of skeet and it won’t cycle anything that’s less than 1200fps. At $20 a pop for a box of Remington express (which runs great!) I might just leave it at home for dove season. Disappointed though cause I want to love this gun

What constriction Carlson waterfowl choke do you use, modified or full? I’m looking at getting a 20 gauge for next season but the 28 gauge is very interesting.

I have a Carlson's Improved Cylinder and Modified. My full is factory. Used the modified on most hunts.

Not understanding the choke issue...so will any 28 ga.mobile choke work now or do you have to have them modified too? Sorry just understanding why if they say mobile chokes work then why they didnt. Thanks. Enjoyed the review.

Any mobile choke will work now. They didn't work because of a tolerance issue in the treading on the barrel.

So what exactly is the problem with the BOSS ammo? Can you explain a little more in depth what about that ammo is different from all the rest that makes it fail to extract properly?

The hulls crack occasionally after being shot. It was a known issue years ago. Only an issue in a few guns like the Tristar

I think more people should use a 28 gauge they would learn to work ducks more and get some closer shots instead of skybusting and ruin it for everybody I love my 28 gauge just wish I could find shells more often
