This is how its done folks! No shouting, no violence, no allegations of vote rigging and fraud, nothing got smashed, the parliament wasn't invaded and ransacked, no one got hurt, no one died and they all shook their opponents hand at the end. Regardless of your political persuasion. Proud to be British. 🇬🇧 🇺🇦 🇺🇸

The Tories took the UK for a joyride and crashed it into several ditches along the way. Now labour have got to fix the smoking wreck somehow. Which explains why their manifesto is so....meh. It's restrained and realistic. Essentially a bunch of baby steps. Starmer doesn't want to promise what can't really be done, and doesn't want to big up what is going to be a cash-strapped and skin of the teeth term in office. Other than the disillusioned socialist left who think Starmer is a traitor, and the lunatic right who think Starmer is the communist incarnation of Satan, I think most of the electorate kind of get that Starmer has a really tough and distinctly unenviable job ahead of him.

I hope the US can get back to saner politics soon too.

Very mature speech by Keir Starmer. It is great to see such decency between opponents in politics, which unfortunately is not there in many other countries anymore. It is also good that Sunak accepted the fact that he had lost the public mandate and called an early election. On the other hand, in Canada, Trudeau is hanging on to power as long as he can by hook or by crook, and is delaying the election with excuses like holidays, which should be an excuse to prepone it instead.

Big in seats yeah, but the vote share was only 34% for labour. And Reform under cut the tory vote greatly. There isn’t much enthusiasm for Keir, although I think he will be a transformative Prime Minister with the large seat count he has he’ll be able to make real change
@PremierCCGuyMMXVI
@PremierCCGuyMMXVI 2 күн бұрын
@@FernandoMartinez-ho3dz yeah, first past the post’s winner take all aspect really skews the result for the winning party. Here in the United States we also have FPTP and while it does not skew all that much considering we only have two parties that can actually win seats in Congress, the electoral college allows it to skew. For example in the 1980 election Ronald Reagan won 51% of the popular vote, a margin of 10 points over incumbent President Jimmy Carter, but because Reagan won by such slender margins in crucial battleground states gathering all their electoral votes, Reagan was able to win an electoral college landslide with 91% of the electoral votes. We even saw that in the 2020 presidential election, Biden beat Trump with a 51-47% victory in the popular vote yet won 57-43% in the electoral college vote by winning by razor thin margins in states such as AZ, WI, PA, and GA but getting 100% of their electoral college votes. We really need electoral systems in both presidential republics like the U.S. or parliamentary republics like the U.K. to either be proportional or have rank choice voting. But hey, a win is a win and Labour will win the second most amount of seats their party has ever governed over. Coming up just short of what they got in I think 1998?
@archie7218
@archie7218 2 күн бұрын
The thing is a lot of this is about incumbency. People inevitably get tired after 14 years of failing to deliver. I hope Starmer delivers better results.
@FernandoMartinez-ho3dz
@FernandoMartinez-ho3dz 2 күн бұрын
@@PremierCCGuyMMXVI yeah labour got 418 in 1997, and they equaled their total in 2001 of 412, but the commons was 659 seats then, now it’s 650. Also America votes for a president so it would make sense if it was just a direct vote, the electoral college doesn’t make sense at all and only favours the minority. A proportional system would be good for the lower house, and the senate should be reformed as well. The UK also does need proportional representation because getting 33.8% of the vote and 63% of the seats doesn’t really make sense. Although I’d rather labour get a landslide victory than the conservatives or reform.
