Good review however what is failed to be mentioned at the end with the A250e comparison is that GTE comes with a lot of Driving Assist features as standard whereas on the A250e you can only put it on the premium plus version which is the most expensive a250e and it costs additional £1500.

I guess VW didn't use customer clinics when they thought about designing in fiddly heating & media controls that make adjusting settings unnecessarily difficult - if it ain't broke don't fix it. And £300 for a reversing camera on a car costing £36K - should be standard at that price.

Hi, It´s been 2years since your comment. Do you still have the MK7 GTE, and how are you feeling about it at this point in time? May i also ask why it is not the most amazing car?

@JR_Racing hi yea of course, I have not long sold it as we went full electric for our daily run around. I actually loved the car! I had the golf at the same time as having a BMW and it was usually the golf keys I reached for. I suppose it didn't do anything extraordinary but it did everything really well! Comfortable spacious enough, plenty of luxuries and tech. Handed pretty well, guess being a die hard GTI fan it probably made me think I was less favorable of the GTE than I actually was. Miss the thing now. I wud definitely recommend one 👌

Ev efficiency (w/km)? 0-100 ev only sprint time? Petrol only (flat battery) efficiency? These are more important to know than the obvious "battery is heavy" thing 🙄

The lack of buttons, confusing menu’s, accidentally touching hyptic buttons are all maddening and dangerous.. having just drive a similar hire car it was just frustrating even after a week of continuous use… when I picked the car up it was set to automatically turn on the heated seat, I could not find how to switch it off for the first couple of very uncomfortable days 😡 just keep the key controls like AC and heated seats etc as buttons! Even filling up was an issue hunting for how to open the filler flap 🤦‍♂️

Why can't VAG use the 1.8 TSI engine with EV range of 80miles?
@boomdaus
@boomdaus 3 жыл бұрын
Because it the size of a hatchback so you can't fit double as big of a battery (the add weight would ruin handling), They should have been able to make a 1.5 TSI fit in there instead of the 1.4

But can the Golf GTE charge the battery up to full, like my Porsche Panamera e-Hybrid can, on say a motorway with flowing traffic, when I will select hybrid mode as E-Charge. Then when you reach the next traffic jam (never far away on British motorways) you can select E-mode on the rotary mode selector and glide along in silence or sit staionary, not using any fuel, as you have a near full lithium traction battery. A salesman at a local VW dealer told me it could charge while driving but a friend who owns a GTE says it can't - who is correct?

Great review, Grace and team! I completely agree with your sum-up - a missed opportunity, and I think less relevant considering the ID range already making it’s way on to the market. Keep up the good work. Cheers

The A Class is only cheaper if you’re happy with out of date tech, the premium plus pack is £3500! It doesn’t even come with adaptive cruise as standard you need to pay the 3.5K for that 😂
@MrDarrylville
@MrDarrylville 2 жыл бұрын
@J. J. Cunningham at least you can spec it on its own though. Rather than being forced to purchase a pack. You are right though they are all pretty bad for it. You get a lot more tech for your money with other brands, they just don’t look as good. 😂

I might move to the old country or Canada soon. Unfortunately VW won’t sell this car in the US and a lot of us really want them to. It would be a good vehicle for the market here. Despite popular belief not all of us are looking for a big pickup or suv.

“All new” apart from that same 1.4 it’s had for 6 years, shame that don’t put the 1.5tfsi in as that’s a much nicer engine and those company car drivers there after will be able to claim more per mile.

great review, buying this seems like a waste of money, none of the gti level handling and none of the true economical performance of a battery powered vehicle. this was built for regulators and that’s it

Today, I drove from Liverpool to the West Midlands and back and averaged over 50mpg in my Golf 1.5 TSI. But my company says that all cars now have to be PHEVs or EVs. But my job as a Service Engineer means that I drive up to 200 miles with no notice. So PHEV it is. And on long journeys the mpg is far worse!

You gotta be a rare animal to want this: a hybrid convert and a VW fanboi. Tiny boot, sluggish charging, unresolved infotainment and $$$. Toyota please!
@viking01
@viking01 3 жыл бұрын
"... the boot only measures 273 litres... the reason that it's so much smaller, is that the battery has to go somewhere and underneath the booth floor is the best place for it" I'm sorry but that would be the worse place to put the battery - handling a curve would be tricky with 150 kilos of extra weight in the very back of the car. The battery is under the BACK SEAT. A small fuel tank in under the booth floor. Please get your basics right. "but with an asking price of 36000 pounds ... puts it in direct competition with the Mercedes A class. Now the A class is cheaper" No, the A class, powered by a Renault Smart engine, is more expensive if you equip it with the same options that come standard with the GTE. Really, this isn't rocket science.

39 miles of range? who at vw thought that was a good idea?
@boomdaus
@boomdaus 3 жыл бұрын
They put a gt badge on it so they more a comparimise toward handling over range Is always going to happen. In reality if places of work had ev charging (even the 7.5kw one) 30 miles is enough for the majority of people commutes in ev mode. The thing is to me a hybrid where you use electricity to charge the battery Evey day instead of a petrol engine. Night rate electricity is cheap so this is more cost effective for people with driveway chargers
@-Derp-
@-Derp- 3 жыл бұрын
@@boomdaus maybe im missing the point of phev. this car for example is 36k gbp 3:40, so thats 50k usd. so gas prices will rise (so will power prices), however if one were to charge car purely from solar panels on the roof of a house then all other means of fueling the car are negated, making pure ev the logical choice. my pick here would be vw id3, or skoda enyaq. both about 200 miles of range, 0 - 60 in 7 secs, and around 30k - 35k gbp.

35-40mpg in hybrid mode ? - if I understood that right, that is deeply deeply underwhelming. To be honest, I cant really see why they bothered. If you want electric, surely and ID3 makes more sense, if you want ICE then any other Golf is cheaper and probably has similar or better economy or handles better. I always liked the idea of the GTE but this hybrid puts me off, pure electric GTE would be much more appealing.
@timaustin2000
@timaustin2000 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a plug at home why would you buy this over an ID3? Interior of the EV isn't any better, screens are bigger, actually has more power, definitely more range, tonnes more interior space and costs about the same. Ah yes, I forget: none of these WILL be plugged in. If you buy this over an ID3 is because you don't have home charging but you want that little bit of tax back.
@The-Salty-Bager

I would have this over the ID3 as the ID3 is horrible to drive the handling is just strange in the ID3

Sold my VW shares yesterday after many years. Buying more $TSLA & $NIO - hybrids make no sense and it seems even VW are unable to catch up with the likes of $TSLA. The ICE age is over. Sad but true, I’ve loved the many VWs I’ve owned.

Hybrids are a very necessary step towards fully electric and therefore make *perfect* sense and will continue to do so for years to come. Tesla's are still far too expensive for many and the cheaper EV's simply can't deal with long distances yet (not without thoroughly planning every trip). Then there's the power grid. We are already dealing with capacity shortages and trying to come up with ways to provide power needed now and in the future. More EV's will have a serious impact on this capacity and so, again, hybrids make perfect sense.
