In this episode of Crash Test we put two identical motorcycle gloves to the test. The only difference in the gloves is that one has seen over 20,00KM of service. How much safety do will you loose over time? That's the questions we hope to answer.

Your seam strength test is also measuring how far the leather stretches before breaking force is applied to the seams. The old glove is already prestretched so of course there will be fewer turns of the spreader to tear the seam. The new leather stretches considerably before tearing force reaches the seam. You need a pull strength gauge to test seam strength accurately. Nice effort, though.

@fattymcgee123 I think one has to accept the fact that these tests could be flawed in just about every way, but that you just expect a certain amount of integrity and honesty from him. Also when you look at the results, its not really that surprising to me. And at the end of the day I don't really see him pushing one product onto his subs or another, or any fishy sales tactics, or at least I don't feel that way. So I find these vids entertaining and they answer a lot of questions like what it looks like when you blow torch certain things etc. But that being said, freeze a glove, put it on and you'll gain a few seconds on the heat test, use a dead battery on a bb gun and you won't penetrate as much, or even a potentiometer or adjustable bb speed, also apply only slight pressure when grinding and then use a lighter bowling ball on the drop test etc etc haha I think one could manipulate just about every one of these tests, but again, it doesn't matter because there isn't really an agenda behind it and its for entertainment in the first place, and to educate. I think the results line up perfectly, foam wears out, looses integrity, leather thins and looses strength over time, stitching becomes weaker and so on. All good, great video. I enjoyed.
@SatansBaby1
@SatansBaby1 6 жыл бұрын
1y late to the party, but still... 1.You dont change power of bb gun with full battery, its the same, only rate of fire is different, similar as if you used old battery to lift a ball to 8m then droped it or new battery, energy of the drop is the same, only it would take longer. Or like crosbow, it you use old battery to reset crosbow, it would take longer but power would be the same. 2. Old glove is full of oils, and compressed and because of that transfers heat better then new, dry , fluffy glove. Pure science. Try removing hot pan from the oven with dry cloth and then do the same with wet or damp or oily cloth. 3. I agree that sanding test is not 1 to 1 as results go, but we also know that used leather is much softer and nicer to wear, unlike brand new. And softer = bad in this test. But 4sec is still good imho.

Welp, this definitely settled my internal debate of whether I should buy used gear or new gear as a first-time rider, haha. I'm only gonna be commuting on roads (not at highway speeds) but still want the best protection possible, within my low budget of about $500. I rode a moped when I was in high school and crashed it going like 10 mph and skinned + bruised my knees pretty bad, so I can only imagine the disaster it would be to crash at 50 mph without proper gear.
@QDADDY6

Venise Berté ah the moped. All the danger of a motorcycle without the fun. I sincerely recommend getting proper gear if you're going to ride anything. I know a guy who got T boned in town and ended up in the hospital for months for head trauma. It doesn't take as much as you might think. Also, your hands, elbows, shoulders and such will thank you later lol

Nice video, definitely looking forward to seeing the helmet comparison. Bought my wife a cheap helmet I'd never heard of from craigslist only because she will RARELY ever go out on the bike with me. The one time I had her on it, she wouldn't let me leave the neighborhood and didn't want me to go over 20mph. So why spend a lot of money on a helmet that will almost NEVER get used... but then there is the fear of that one time I get her to take the bike on date night, and that happens to be the day things go wrong.

Should do this kind of test with a 2yr old helmet and a brand new but otherwise identical helmet (I've seen this tested, SPOILER: things don't go well for the old helmet, the results were shocking). People often see the wear on their gloves, jacket etc and replace them but helmets tend to look the same over time, but the components (EPS, polycarbonate, the glue used to bond them etc) dry out over time and lose serious strength. I would recommend that riders should replace their helmet at a maximum of every 3 years, and preferably every 2 years, even if it's never been dropped or abused.

Forgive me, but I'm going make a wild guess. Water is the 'universal solvent', and the degradation in the water resistance of the gloves contributed to the softening and leeching out of natural oils in the leather; loss of fire and abrasion resistant chemical coatings and contributed to softening of the armour pad structure. If that theory is correct, then all other motorcycle clothing that is not kept regularly water-resist reproofed is suspect after only a couple of years. Just sayin'

I bought a pair of gloves, oakley tacticle gloves, all leather design with some mesh type leather at the bottom, and armored knuckles, the inside foamy but the outside hard plastic with a carbon fiber vinley, it seems strong… im not sure, ivr seen reviews for them as motorcycle gloves but it could be a paid reviewer… maybe you should check them out. Love the content
@QDADDY6
@QDADDY6 7 жыл бұрын
OverKnight 52 they aren't riding gloves in any way. They're tactical. They will feel like shit if you ride for a little while. They don't have the proper padding in the areas that you need them. Also, the Oakley gloves that i know and have used don't have very good breath ability. I strongly recommend saving the trouble and buying a nice pair of actual riding gloves.

When it comes to testing abrasion strength, could you not place a metal plate inside the glove and time it to when you get the first spark? That way you don't have to keep turning the glove over and checking to see if it's worn through.

Can you do a review of the Shark Vancore? I'm tempted to buy one because it looks badass, it has that fighter jet styling that I absolutely love. I'd expect it to be noisier than my s900, that I can live with for urban riding. However- The goggles look like the vision radius is greatly reduced, and the chin bar isn't safety approved (but what exactly does that mean? will it shatter on impact?) FortNine, Should I stay away?

Premium helmet companies always compare to ultra-sketchy cheap helmets. A more apt comparison would be high-end vs legitimate-entry-level, like Bilt or Sedici. I suspect that's never done because the result would be closer. Only 6D and Bell Flex offer safety tech not available in 1960.

All those tearing and stretching tests are totally out of context and non-repetitive in nature, not representative to anything. If you change any force applied, even its direction, you will get different results. Error margin: I guess some 80% of measured values. That you always get desired ratio old vs new: well, that's marketing disguised behind 'testing'. Unfortunately.

Ok. I usually love these vids... But on this one I noticed something. You did the abrasion test and the old glove already had a spot in the leather that was broken open. I think this video is just to push this product.
