Dive into the world of natural wildlife pools at Zaytuna Farm with Geoff Lawton and his son, Danial.
Geoff introduces Danial, the permaculture maestro behind the scenes, sharing the ins and outs of this enchanting natural pool next to a house site. It's a blend of clay, geofabric, and a dash of polymer to keep things pristine. Danial spills the secrets of the system, from bubble air-lift pumps lifting water through a gravel bed to a jet blower creating a gentle dance between shallow and deep areas.
A bottom-up filtration gravel pit, resembling a bog filter, adds the perfect touch. Danial talks about the plastic pallets creating the structure, allowing water to gracefully spill back into the main area, slowing down and leaving sediment behind. A waterfall-like feature with reeds and plants adds to the charm, creating a haven for aquatic life.
The landscaping is a labor of love, with rocks carefully placed by hand (shoutout to Mr. Parker Davis, the rock-stacker). The pool's surroundings include a vegetative landscape, footpaths, and even a designated jump-off point for wildlife.
Danial unveils the intricate underwater details-staggered beaches, a turtle beach, and a deeper section for a diverse aquatic habitat. Geoff emphasizes the importance of underwater intricacies for wildlife, revealing the unseen marvels beneath the surface.
A temporary cover disguises a high-tech pump with variable speeds, ensuring not just a stunning pool but a clean and inviting wildlife habitat.

Nice to meet your son and hear you two walking through the wildlife pond design. I’d be interested to see a diagram of the angles and levels and water flow related to which critters go where.

Thank you Geoff and Daniel for sharing this with us. I'm working on a pond system and this has helped me figure out some details on a bit smaller scale for wildlife. I so appreciate this. We have a lot of geoengineering of weather here and chemicals sprayed in the air so I'm searching solutions to protect the ponds, wildlife and plant life. Always open to solutions. Again thank you so much to both of you

That skimmer is wayyy undersized. I really like that you’re imitating an Aquascape ecosystem Dan, but if you’re going to go for it, I wouldn’t cut corners. There’s a reason they do things they way they do… but I agree they are expensive. Still cheaper to get good components off the bat than replacing the skimmer or the components that fail after 2-5 years. Then you’ll blame the pond…

High, Mr. Jeff Lawton Sir, I am a big fan of yours. Can you please give some suggestions or make some video content on how to keep a pool/pond crystal clear/ clean naturally without any pump or filter or artificial interference?

i was just considering the idea of utilizing a zig zag pattern of drainage to direct water through a tesla valve pattern of berms and swales. which would serve as a mechanically natural feature to catch and store water on the banks. loLol

A natural pool is called a pond or a lake. This is a synthetic and non-natural pool. The title of the video calls it a 'wildlife swimming pool' which is more fitting than 'natural pool'.

From my experience, your better off just concreting these . When they get a leak ,and they all do , it's not much fun. Especially when the leaks in the bottom. The concrete cost isn't much different to the rocks and liner. I just artificial rock the sides and gravel the bottom. Last forever, look more natural.

Expensive disaster if it is to be used by animals. High maintenance and limited lifespan. Free could ever afford such a system and many would neve get the exact materials.
