My priority is now and will always be, the players, the gamers.
I will praise what is good, and slate what is bad so the players can make an informed choice about the games they spend their hard earned money on.

The gaming industry does face a unique challenge that most other industries don't, and that is that every system that the game runs on (at least if it's on PC or phones) is going to be different. Even if I buy the same parts as my friend, due to factory differences, they are going to be SLIGHTLY different. That's why even with the same batch, not all hardware responds exactly the same. Add to that software differences, operating system versions and patch levels, driver update status, etc etc etc, and you end up with a beautiful mess that's sometimes impossible to diagnose. But, having said all that, they could do better. A whole hell of a lot better.

So it's just like Blizzard ignore working on bad systems untill either: Somebody makes a YT video about it, posts it on Twitter, the player base drops by over 50% (January this year to July this year for Shadowlands) or it gets featured in a news article. One thing to give Blizzard critical bugs are often fixed the same day or withing 2 hours once and are very rare and hard to reproduce. Unlike New Bugs where all you need is a lag switch, or just using a hatchet as you main dps weapon.

It's not acceptable to have everyone standing still when in the flag at war, it's not acceptable for there to be 3 new bugs everyday. "This game also had that bug on release". Yes, and it was released 20 years ago. Since then the problem has been thoroughly analysed, recognised and data shared; then 15 additional years passed where other games didn't have those bugs, including people who had no experience in even neighbouring fields. To not think about, is purely incompetence at the best, malicious greed at worst. If a new car company makes a new car, but forgot to make sure the seatbelt is properly fastened to the car, you don't excuse the fault, you demand them to recall and fix it now or don't be in the car business. Just because you didn't crash in the car, doesn't mean a bad seatbelt is a standard error we should accept.

The thing is, nobody thought the game was 100% client authoritative -- we thought the game was client authoritative in extremely troublesome areas. They came out with that huge post saying the game isn't client authoritative, but it really doesn't explain away a lot of the issues that exist. It's either that they are incredibly incompetent and made certain key areas of the game client authoritative, or they are incredibly incompetent in that they couldn't properly write code to have the server determine what is and isn't possible (because their post says that the server "checks" to see if an action is possible). Even just the whole "as long as you hold your game window, your character will float in the air" exploit is so bizarre. Other games would just have your character continue on its current trajectory (because, normally, no matter what input the client sent to the server, a character should never be floating mid-air) and fall -- either straight down or with momentum. The fact that a character's position (x,y,z), and state (isMoving, isFalling) are being determined by the client in these cases is what makes the whole thing suspect.
@theonlylunarmage
@theonlylunarmage 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like a handshake to the client. Doing all the processing on the server, sending that data to the client who then verifies it or has to receive it first and then the server pushes the changes to itself and the other nearby users. If the server doesn't get its response from the client it doesn't push any data. Just because the method wasn't what Josh Strife Hayes said it wasn't doesn't change the reality that the problem exists because of manipulation by the client, and the whining apologists who want to pretend otherwise are hurting themselves more.

The fact that amazon took the comments about client authoritative actions to mean people thought a multiplayer online game was purely client authoritative, is just them constructing a giant strawmen. And some of those problem can cost people's life. Even if we ignore the problems occurring in different parts of the world like starvation and poverty while the west is being wasteful which are problems that feel too distant from us. what about the poor people in america who live in the hoods and can get shot any day from a drive by? or the homeless people, drug addicts, prostitutes and kidnappers, etc. why is it that most people continue their daily life and ignore those problems without doing anything about it? why is that the government of america can spend billions of dollars on who knows what and random projects and what not, but it cant spare even 1% of its military budget to help its own people and how come it seems like nobody even cares? Its not exactly the same, but it's not far off. everyone (lets be fair and say "most people" instead of "everyone") knows those problems exist but most people dismiss them because it's not their own problem that other people suffer from injustice.

To this day the bug hasn't been submitted to any of the github bug trackers of any of the wow private servers so it's safe to say that I am if not the only person who knows how to reproduce it, among a very small group of people who do. And you're completely correct, the best way to make sure that bugs are fixed is to make them publicly known among the players because people will abuse them and the devs will pick up on what's going on. That said I never actually abused the bug for my own gain. I just enjoyed the feeling of knowing that I had access to something exclusive, almost like a coveted secret that only I knew about.

I think the thing that raises the most eyebrows for me is when you say "This is my favourite bug of the week", the fact that there is that many that you have a multitude to select from every week just goes to show that they're suffering from the same problem that Blizzard is right now, not listening to feedback and not using Beta's for what they're supposed to be for, polishing the game. I have a few content creators that I watch that have the "this is normal for an MMO launch" attitude or "they'll fix it eventually" but they're missing your very important point... Why should this be the norm... Why can't they release a finished game? In 2021 with all of the competition in the space, why would you release a beta (or in some places, alpha) quality game? Is this what gamers deserve? I'll never understand that attitude and I think it's extremely short sighted, and i'm thankful that you have the following that you do and that you're willing to speak out for those of us with no voice and who just get called "haters" for not agreeing with the status quo. Thankyou Josh, for saying what we can't.

I can easily believe how games are buggier than before, unfortunately. The IT industry as a whole has "streamlined" to the point where it's amazing half this stuff even starts. I'm in IT, and every time I log into one of the online trade shows, it's all about getting more features done with less people. Think of Microsoft who axed their QA team back in 2014, and now printing on Windows breaks in a brand new way every month. Nobody thinks about slowing down and getting it right the first time; instead they look at Amazon who said they release something every 11.7 seconds and they think that's the gold standard.

Couldn't agree more. Players should revolt against the corporate mindset of higher management. Not so long ago Jagex decided to refuse the work of a fan, who made an HD plugin for Runescape. He spent 2000 hours on that project and wanted nothing in return, only the plugin to be allowed by the company. Players gathered in Falador protesting (there were so many people, the game couldn't render them all) and players started to cancel their subscriptions. 2 or 3 days later Jagex announced they will allow the hd plugin until they finish their in- house hd remaster. You must punch a corporate where it hurts and that is their money. If players would cancel their subs, the company would have no choice, but fix the bugs to bring the players back. I don't hate on the developers (I am a developer myself, not in gaming industry tho). The developers - especialy in gaming industry - have to be on a relatively tight schedule. There is no such thing in game development like work- life balance and stress causes things to be approved, while they shouldn't be, because the seniors who do the code review are tired or burnt out or just simply overlooked the bug. Everyone makes mistakes. I hate the corporate system. The system that doesn't care about the wellbeing of the employees or the clients expectations, only about their pockets. That is the source of all that's wrong with gaming industry.

Then what do we see over and over after a deep dive into what went wrong? Management and corporate did xyz or didn’t do xyz. While the business side of gaming is important, it feels like the corporation of game companies have lost sight of just making a good game and having it just organically make money instead of just trying to squeeze out all the money they can out of a game for 6 months and drop the game.

@@rogoth01themasterwizard11 Honestly, I think it's standard fare in IT work to have the user provide steps to replicate the problem, even if it is a simple thing like "I can't login to the service". My job has at times involved addressing such requests, and while a deft understanding of the infrastructure helps and can even have me fixing the issue without contacting the customer, I always appreciate when the ticket includes steps for replicating the bug when I get it, instead of not having it and having to bug them. I feel the issue is that Amazon is treating a game the same as any other IT service and not adapting to the standards for services that MMOs have. In this case, there are many places online where you can find IT forum posts that describe and ask about resolutions for specific issues users are facing, which are replied to in public by company employees. I believe Amazon has co-opted this system without realizing or considering that other users of the game can replicate this with little effort, or did not care. After all, Amazon is used to caring about issues that involve customer data, or confidential/proprietary information; compared to that, issues that happen in a game, that only affect things in the game, likely mean very little to them. That's why I don't trust them yet. They aren't a gaming company; they're a monolithic company that's trying out gaming. If the games go under, they're still sitting pretty raking in billions on everything else they do. Why would they stick their neck out for this?

To anyone who says "This doesn't affect me. Why don't you just play casually and ignore the bugs?": the overall health of ANY multiplayer game is defined by the community as a whole. A game that has been designed and marketed as a COMBINATION of all these features will start collapsing if players of certain type start leaving in droves. It DOES affect you, you are just too dumb to see it. For example, if you enjoy making money on the market in New World, if all PvP players leave because of bugs, the market will start stagnating, because a lot of consumable sales are tied to PvP use. If there's no real endgame, but it doesn't affect you right now because "you're just enjoying the journey casually", by the time you reach max level, you won't get to experience even the little endgame that there is, because everyone will have left. Just because you are too STUPID and SELFISH, and only see what's right in front of your nose right now doesn't mean these issues won't affect you in the long term. If a game is bad enough, you might not even get to max level before other players desert the game and you'll be there alone. Enjoy your wood hacking & mob slaughtering solo simulator with no dungeons, market, pvp or people to talk to. And if you enjoy THAT experience, then why the hell are you even playing New World?

Every day my game has a queue every day i chat with my faction by and large only a small percentage of people abuse these exploits. Also its silly to think that AGS wont correct the effects of said abuse and or ban the abusers. In the grand scheme of things this game can only get better and the powers that control the server now likely wont effect how things turn out. Either they wont be able to win cuz they relied on exploits, or there rosters were banned, or got burnt out cuz thats typically what happens to me when I enable cheats in my single player games

It's not as simple with MMOs sadly. If you wait for too long you might be way too behind everyone else that started day one and in some cases catching up is extremely hard or impossible. So people are taking a bigger risk when it comes to MMOs. It's also fun to be there at the start too but sometimes (like in case of New World) after a couple weeks you might realize that what you bough isn't that great. You should go in with that risk in mind. Some are fine with that, you got your moneys worth and had fun move along. But for someone else the money spend isn't that easy to get by and they went in with the expectations of sticking around for much longer. Those people get shafted and might be stuck there high on copium that it isn't as bad as everyone says.

I think they were "technically" correct, imo they are more manipulating people with a clever use of language, not sure I'd say it gets all the way to gaslighting. They took Josh's claim to mean that the client has full authority and then refuted that, saying instead of no server side authority, there is some server side authority. So the answer to the basically irrelevant question: "Is there any server side authority?" (because there has to be, it's an online game) the answer is "Yes, there is server side authority." Either way it is crazy manipulative, especielly because basically every mmorpg has a hybrid model with some server and some client side authority anyway, so even assuming Josh meant that only one was the case is creating a strawman of his statement.

To add insult to injury, I was talking to a quest giver and was stuck in limbo. My unstuck was on CD and I was taking blight damage.
