Jack The Ripper Tour

Жыл бұрын

In this video, we join the people of Victorian Britain on New year's Eve,188, as they prepare to usher in 1889.
The year that was now drawing to its close had seen the horrors of the Whitechapel murders blight the autumn, and, in addition, two horrific child murders had taken place in the closing months of the year.
Several newspapers were speculating that the country was now in the grip of an outbreak of murder mania, and people were unsure of what the year ahead would bring.
Their trepidation was increased by the fact that the year ended with a thick fog descending on London, and this, coupled with the fact that Jack the Ripper was still at large, ensured that a collective feeling of extreme unease was sweeping across the country.
However, several newspapers were also reporting that a Scotland Yard detective was in New York making inquiries about a particular suspect who had fled there two or three weeks previous. There was a hope that the perpetrator of the Whitechapel murders would soon be in custody.

It was a gift to Abberline apparently I don't know how or why it's being given so much provenance. I'm not sure why you'd want the thing that haunted you and brought you shame on your cane. Maybe that's just me.

Happy New Year to you, Richard! Thank you for another fascinating video. I had no idea about the child murder of Percy Knight Searle in Havant. This is the Hampshire town where my play, The Unfortunate, about the East End of the Whitechapel Murders, went ahead in April last year, which you may recall I told you about at the time. I am currently studying acting at East 15 drama school and am due to graduate this autumn. I wondered if you will be recruiting people to join your team of guides later in the year? This is something I would love to do, if the opportunity to arose. All the best, Richard, and once again, thank you for inspiring my fascination in the history of the East End, Jack the Ripper and wider Victorian society. - Ben Tanner.

Isn't it generally thought that the "Dear Boss" letter was written by an American? I'm sure I read this somewhere.
@taranullius9221
@taranullius9221 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Not heard that. If it was an American it was an American who know quite a bit about London and the nature of the press.
@davidmccann9811
@davidmccann9811 Жыл бұрын
@@taranullius9221 The "Dear Boss" letter was written in a type of copper-plate writing called "Spenserian script". This was a form of writing widely taught to Americans in the 19th century, but not to British people. There have also been suggestions that some of the terms in the letter, "they won't fix me" or "gave me real fits", and even calling someone "Boss" were considered to be American English. I think the idea was that this was penned by a London based American closely connected to the Central News Agency, or at least the press.
