Hi Julia: former New Yorker here. Why didn’t you take the subway to the ferry? Parking is practically nonexistent in lower Manhattan. I feel so badly about this. Looks like you had a good time otherwise.

It is so easy to get flustered when you are stressed out and in a hurry - particularly in a new city. When you are in your home area you can laugh off and dismiss scammers like you encountered - but during travel it is a different scenario. Hats of to you for sharing your story - it should help others in the future.

If you have been scammed, I’m sorry to hear that Dispute the payment and hope for the best. Don’t let that thought cross your mind because when that happens it’s only gonna end up driving up the wall. Try your best to request a charge back because if the parking dud is charged you $38 and instead charged you $100, that’s wrong that’s called stealing you’ve got the rights to dispute the payment. I’ve been scammed a couple of times I went and requested the charge back from my bank and they did it straight away. There are a lot of scams in this world that we all have to be aware of

My aunt knows the person who plays Iago in Aladdin on Broadway! Also, NYC is full of scammers and people scattered around times square and the statue of liberty area trying to sell you tours. I remember walking to the Staten Island Ferry from the subway station with my family and I and we got stopped by someone who asked where we were going for some reason.

I’m from an outside borough of Manhattan If you had jumped on the ferry you could have stopped by. Hint hint lol. I’m sorry you got scammed. Happens to a lot of people. Like you said lesson learned. Always use a parking garage. There’s almost always specials. Icon parking has an app. I leave mine on my phone. you can book prior to parking there and there’s almost always coupons. I hope it didn’t ruin your trip. I saw the hotel and have seen it from the outside. It’s really cute inside! I’m going to try it next time we do a weekend away. I visit NYC about 5 times/year. I think Amtrak is a good option. You can also drive to an Edison parking lot next to the Seacaucus NJ train station, and take the train one stop into Manhattan.

You need to dispute those charges call your local bank and you can dispute those charges. Sorry that happened to you and your sister.

No one does Christmas better than NYC. Our trip consists for the Christmas markets, the tree and usually 2-3 Broadway productions because no one does theatre better than NYC😎

The hotel is beautiful and rather large looking for New York standards, was it extremely costly? We took the Ferry to Miss Liberty several years ago,( got on near Battery Park; I think), she is beautiful!

OMG!!!!! JULIA!!!! You stayed at...(GASP!!) THE CHELSEA HOTEL?!!!!! That place is FAMOUS!!!! All the artists and music people have stayed there over the years! Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lenard Cohen. Chelsea Clinton is named after that place. And Joni Mitchell's song Chelsea Morning was written for it. Of course now I realize Julia is young enough to ask..."who is Lenard Cohen, who is Bob Dylan"?! KIDS!!

Julia, yes, people have been living in that hotel for years. It has had a varying reputation over the years. Most recently for its association with punk rock culture and Hollywood personalities staying there. From what I have heard it’s gone over a huge makeover and has moved a lot of the people who actually live there to a different location in the hotel. Several documentaries have been made about this hotel and it’s residence.

Enjoyed visiting NYC with you and your sister. Great that you guys set aside a yearly trip together, how wonderful. Also, thanks for sharing your story of being scammed. Since you payed with your credit card, there is a chance you can have it reversed. Go to the bank if it's a debit card or contact the card company and challenge the payment. I have had some shady charges reversed this way. Anyway, glad you got home to Ms Luna safe and sound 🙂

I used to ride the Staten Island Ferry twice a day and it was a great way to start and end your day, so I'm glad you got to take it in the end!

Wow! What’s unfortunate is there are scammers in New York who make a living ripping unsuspecting tourists off. You should consider reporting that charge as theft because that’s essentially what it was, you should definitely get your money back. You were charged something you didn’t ask for, if you used American Express it should be fairly easy.

I went to NYC for my HS senior trip and it was a blast I could recap the entire thing but I’m just gonna list the key things I did & places I visited - Times Square - Rockefeller Plaza - Central Park - Statue of Liberty (We went on a cruise on some other boat to see it; we didn’t ride the Saton Island Ferry like you did) - MET museum - saw 2 broadway shows (Aladdin and the Lion King) - 9/11 museum & memorial The highlight of this trip: I was going on a tour with my high school fine arts programs. I was in the band & the orchestra went with us and we had a performance at Carneige Hall, the most iconic concert hall in the country first opening back in 1891. I know you couldn’t fit this into your trip but even seeing a concert here should be something on your bucket list. PS: happy birthday to Alicia! Y’all are so lucky to have each other in y’all’s lives ❤

My wife and I traveled last week to NYC with my BIL & SIL. It was my BIL first time. We have been many times before having relatives that live north of the city. The weather was great and a little cold but we walked and subwayed all over the city. Sorry you were scammed but you should be able to dispute that charge. We booked all our 'tours' on line with the venues and we were warned by the carriage ride tour company to NOT talk to any of the people that will ask you if you want a carriage ride in the park because there are a lot of scammers. Also, driving in the city, as you probably found out, is really not necessary. We took the #1 subway down from mid town to South Ferry to get on the boat to the Statue of Libery and Ellis Island. Oh, and as one mention in another post Liberty Bagel is 'the best'! Plus Stage Door Deli down near the World Trade Center is great too!

Hi Julia, What a wonderful hotel! I definitely want to stay there. Glad you were able to put the scammer behind and enjoy the ferry. We got scammed in Paris for a little bit less and had to quickly decide to put it behind us to catch our train to Nice.

Fun Fact, General Douglas MacArthur spent the last decade or so of his life living in the Waldorf Astoria hotel in NYC. He was one of the most important people in the world at the time so having him as a resident really boosted the hotels standing (which was already stratosphereic).
