They influenced so many bands it’s hard to measure that

Back in '73, I read an intensely rave review about the NY Dolls in Cream magazine that was so passionate and persuasive that I had to go out and buy the album ASAP. I think it was written by Lester Bangs (not 100% sure). But I remember their sound being described as early Rolling Stones colliding with a Mac truck! I have to admit, I didn't appreciate the record at first. In the mean time, I saw that they were going to perform on a local L.A. teen dance show, so I turned it on. I still wasn't in love, but I was fascinated. What terribly strange young men! They were wearing woman's clothes and cheap-slut hair. Even in black and white, they glittered. And I will never forget how awkwardly they moved on that tiny stage in their towering platform boots. Gradually, they began to grow on me like a persistent fungus. I played the record for my friends, but no one liked them or had any interest. Same with Raw Power by the Stooges. They are no longer outrageous, but at the time they were from another dimension. Really out there! And you all know how they inspired the creation of the Sex Pistols and that really changed the world. Then rap. But have there been a more important bands since the '70s?

This exact line up lasted less than 3 years. Start in 1971 Johnny, Billy, Arthur, Rick. Add David. Rick got kicked out, replaced with Syl in January 1972. Billy died November 1972, Jerry replaced him December 1972. They officially broke up April 1975.

...who is the *real* David

He's the cab driver in "Scrooged!" I remember an interview he did after he had his first child. He said he thought he'd be a dad like he imagined Ringo Starr would be. If the kids were playing with matches, he'd tell them to "take 'em outside and play." Real kicked back...and irresponsible.
