Partial Broadcast lat two innings..some rare WOR TV NY Footage of the Mets and Reds from Riverfront stadium 1978 we pick up the game action during the top of the 8th Inning with Lindsey Nelson doing the play by play and post game recap..this was from an old pre recorded VHS tapes I've had since the early 90s not too much game footage has been saved from the Mets in the late 70s or early 80s or any MLB really trying to include all I have..a blast from the past for all Mets and MLB fans

What really jumped out at me here was the lack of chatter between pitches. It's a good lesson to today's broadcasters... less is more.

Wow.Thank you.I knew that voice immediately. I had forgotten that Mr Lindsey Nelson was still broadcasting with the NY Mets as late as 1978.And to see Ed Kranepool again. In the outfield of all places since he was a first baseman. A Met since their inception.Old Riverfront stadium with that rock hard artificial surface. The hot dog Willie Montanez at first base for the Mets. The great Johnny Bench and Davey Concepcion.Solid players in George Foster,Ken Griffey,sr and Ray Knight. My Late dad loved the once 3 man broadcasting Team of Ralph Kiner,Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson. The 3 Leprechauns he would say. What memories.

Didn’t realize the Mets went this long without players’ names on jerseys. And the Reds had just enormous name lettering on theirs. Oh, and check out Lindsey Nelson’s blazer starting at 18:13.

This was the final year without names. The Mets added names to the home and road jerseys in ‘79.

@@lemmiwinks09 With the roster the Mets had in 1978 not putting the names on the backs of the jerseys was an act of mercy.

@ZZSmithReal I'll say. Upon what I've heard about that years particular met team, perhaps it was better off.

1978 was Lindsey Nelsons last season as a Met Broadcaster, The next season he would move to the S.F. Giants Broadcasting for 3 seasons then would be a College Football Broadcaster for CBS. Starting in 79 Steve Albert would his replacement, also in 79 the Mets would have their names on the uniforms.

@ 5:29... That's Dutch Rennert as the HP Ump. Harry Caray used to say when he called a strike it looked like he was laying an egg. LOL And then of course he would spell his name backwards... Trenner! I always liked when Harry spelled Terry Tata backwards... At At 😆

Great post! Rare footage from the era. Mets down and out and even their uniforms looked down and out. Looks like they bought the cheapest uniforms to meet mlb specifications. Last season for Lindsey Nelson.

Lol its true. They were pretty bad after Tom Seaver left.My Pop loved them after his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants skipped town after the 1957 season. I use to love sitting and talking to him while suffering through another Mets loss during the lean years 1977-1983.Lol we loved the broadcasting team more than most of the players. There is one memory that has me in stitches to this day.I can't remember the year off hand but the Mets were set to play the Montreal expos on Monday Night Baseball. The Mets I believe were 15-9 at the point of the season and were on top in the National League East.Howard Cossell was really hyping the Mets good start to the season. Aww for the love of God,my father moaned. Will you shaddup already, Howard. Geez. Why is he so over the top? That just his style papa.He knows damn well the Mets are gonna be in the cellar by the end of the year. But in 1983,the year before my pop passed away he got to see the future makings of a good team once again. In 1984 he was even more excited when Dwight Gooden came on the scene to team up with Daryl Strawberry, Gary Carter and Keith Hernandez,Hubie Brooks. When he knew that his illness was terminal he made his wife and 3 children promise to put an American Flag and the next Mets championship banner at his gravesite. We kept our promise when we all went together to pay our respects to him on Memorial Day in 1987.The American flag was already there at the Long Island National Cemetery for Veterans. We put the 1986 championship banner beside it.I swear a butterfly settled atop the headstone. Mama what do you think would happen if we put flowers there instead. My mother thought for a moment .A bird would have dropped something we would not be to happy about. We all laughed. Thanks for the memories.

@@rafaelramirez3180 You welcome.I am so glad for these videos. So many great memories come to mind.It makes me think of so many friends and relatives who are no longer here. And it makes growing older so much easier. Those announcers had that special something. To be able to forget your anxieties for 3hrs and leave the viewer and listener transfixed. Its like listening to a Mozart or Beethoven symphony and proclaiming OMG that's it.Todays announcers are way too analytical for my taste.lol they don't know when to shut up.My God I listen to Mr.Lindsey Nelson and I feel like I am sitting in the stands at Riverfront stadium instead of sitting on a couch at home.

I know Johnny Bench is one of the greatest Catchers ever, but his style of catching would mess me up as a Pitcher. He shows the back of the catcher's glove when showing a target for the Pitcher. I don't remember anyone else doing this during this era.

not sure if it's not the pitcher immediately going into the wind up as he gets the sign. i've never noticed that about Bench before. Benito Santiago used be criticized for that a lot.

The Mets were just terrible in the late 70's and early 80's. It wasn't until '83 that they started being contenders again.
