Thank you for reminding us of one of the most beautiful train trips on the east coast. We took this train in 1976, and still have very fond memories of the trip.

@@TalwinderDhillonTravels The quality of Amtrak trains is so much better now. I have taken many long-distance trips on Amtrak since then, though not the Adirondack. The condition of the rolling stock, accomadations, food, and staff has improved steadily over the years. The biggest problem with our wonderful passenger rail networks is the hegemony of the damned fright companies.

I have since 2009 moved out of the USA but when i lived in New York City i would travel by this train to Montreal. I could never understand why a route with the most gorgeous scenery didn't get special observation decks. The major problem was the Canadian freight trains had proprietary rights ro the two tracks ai when encountering a freight the Amtrak has to move to the side until the freight passed. One time when entering an empty train at Penn Station the conductor forces everyone into a crowded car and would not let a person into the seven or eight empty cars. Horrible! Another time the train back to New York City ran into a heavy snow storm and what was supposed to be a six hour trip turned into sixteen hours with no food aboard as it had run out after five hours. What happened was the heavy snow had knocked trees down onto the tracks and the train had to stop and the trees cleared. For those like me who enjoyed the fresh air, a step outside of the last car was an enjoyable way to take in the scenery but uh uh, the enforcers would come along and say no longer permissable. Also I would take a bedroom car to San Francisco with my dog in my room but once Amtrak was given the railroad all animals were relegated to baggage.

I took this train in 1993 and the views and experience were wonderful. Reserved the last possible dinner so that I wouldn't be rushed and was seated with a fascinating elderly woman, and we talked and drank the night away while taking in views of the hudson

It reopened sometime in 2023. However they recently stopped it again for track maintenance on the Canadian side of the border. Tracks on Canadian side are maintained by CN and were in bad shape.

Do we need a passport for this or is a real ID ok?
@TalwinderDhillonTravels
@TalwinderDhillonTravels 5 ай бұрын
Yes, You need an American passport to enter Canada. You will be sent back if you don't have one. A lot of people make this mistake of showing up at the border with a drivers license or some other ID. Before January 2007, Canadian/USA citizens could travel by land and air to the US/Canada with government issued photo ID for anyone 17 and older, and a birth certificate if under 17. The changes to that started shortly after the September 11 2001 attacks and the creation of the US Homeland Security department. Canada implemented similar rules at the same time.

@talwinderrrr thanks. I used to take group trips to Montreal with my college starting in 1999. December of 2001, we were held in a line of busses at the border for 9 hours and we all had to get off the bus for a customs check. I think the last year I went was 2003 and I did not have a passport then. I haven't been back since but I love Montreal and it's on my travel list 100% I think I've been there 7 times in total.

This train ride sucks. It makes no sense for this train to take 10-12 hours to get from one city to the other. Pathetic speeds north of Albany, and even more pathetic speeds of 5-10 miles an hour when you get across into Canada. a 45 min ride from Rouses Point NY to Montreal QC takes 3 hours on this train.
@TalwinderDhillonTravels
@TalwinderDhillonTravels 3 ай бұрын
I agree that the ride sucks overall. But considering flights being twice as expensive and bus ride being super uncomfortable, i think it has its place. If you own a car, you have no business taking this train other than maybe once, purely for tourism purposes.
