If you're manually advancing the film and using the numbers on the back paper, doesn't it automatically mean that you'll be taking 12 pictures per roll?

I’ve got a 1950s Super Ikonta A (645 format). The camera is fiddly to adjust for sure, but in “street” mode I use its red dot settings: hyperfocal focus, aperture ~f/9. All I have to set from frame to frame is the shutter speed. This works real well.

Just got a 6 x 9 folding camera and damn it's light and portable for a huge negative!

The results from that Zeiss Tessar are stunning, that's reason enough to shoot it more! Folders will never be as quick to use as other cameras, but with familiarity you would improve your timing with the shutter release. I guess the best advice is to use it to its strengths, ask to take portraits (because it looks cool and will interest people) or set up a composition and wait for someone/ something to happen in it.

I bought a Mamiya 6 after watching your video about it. I've put a few rolls through it and I love the way they look. I find the focusing to be a bit fiddly since the patch is so small, but it's a fun camera to use!

Always great videos. I am owner of a lot of these folding cameras in various formats. I love the historical steam locomotiv design . I love the time taking process of writing with light. And the results mostly are really awesome. But if needed, with a mindfully , mechanical sequence of steps it is possible to accelerate this job a lot.

Nice to see you back in the streets, good tempo! Your Super Ikonta is a very early model, should be around 1935, lens could be even older - actually, the harder to find version. So keep in mind this is twenty years older than your Mamiya! These were used a lot during the war by press and military photogs. Later ones had a single rangefinder/ viewfinder combo. Alfer the war coated, BX version will give you 12 shots. Had several different versions of this, kept the BX, because it has the best lens. Yes, I do find there is some inconsistencies in the lenses, and the BXs I had come closest to my Rolleiflex 2.8C‘ Planar. The exposure meter is big, true, but if it works, is very accurate (post war), similar to those on the Contax IIIa. There is a Contameter for close-ups and much nicer, there is a set of two close-up lenses made in England which offer rangefinder coupling. Hard to find tho.

Also have one of these, although mine is a 532/16 which has a coated lens. I also shot the 530 but the lens was very prone to flare, so I kept the 532, which also has just one finder with a coupled rangefinder, making it much quicker to shoot with! If it wasn't so damn heavy, I'd use it much more. My Agfa Isolette, however, is so much lighter, and its lens nearly as good as the Zeiss. The Isolette needs regular shooting or CLA though, which I do myself, otherwise the focus wheel will stiffen up. Note as well, that with these old rangefinders you almost certainly will have to adjust the rangefinder to achieve critical focus for the sharpest frames those pretty good lenses are able to resolve. The Isolette is much easier in that regard. The Super Ikonta is quite a hassle to adjust. Great video as always!

Another great video. I will admit to being a little jealous that you have Acros in 120. I really miss that film.

My first medium format camera was a Zeiss Ikonta 520/16 (1937-1939). It’s very close to the camera you have there with one difference: instead of the two finders, you only have a „sports finder“ and it was hilarious to compose with this tiny metal frame that would pop up by accident all the time. 😂 Needless to say that the shutter speed setting lock, focusing (using only a scale) and aperture ring setting was a super finicky, not to mention that you could barely see what your final composition will look like with this little metal frame. I don’t want to say that I loved it, but it was fun, really. The lens, however, was astonishingly sharp and quite good for an Anastigmat type lens.

Nice walk around, and some really nice shots considering the hustle-bustle. My favorite of this era, similar to the Zeiss-Ikon, is the Franka Solida III... the RF is uncoupled (some do not have a range-finder however), so you must find the range in that window then set focus directly on the lens, so I often just use scale-focus estimations. :) But it's a simpler, smaller, lighter folding camera than the Super Ikontas and the Schneider-Krueznach lens is to die for in my opinion; one of my favorites of all time.

I mean if you want beside your digital images also the analog look you can easily take this camera with you and you have it! Light, very compact, reliable ... you can take portraits, street, architecture ( limited by the fixed focal length ) and landscapes with only this camera ...

Just got back from a trip to Shanghai. Was shooting my Agfa Super Isolette great little holding range finder for street. Get one from Certo6 like I did though.

If you're looking for a foldable 120 rangefinder, with a 2.8 lens, look for the Certo6. Really awesome camera. The focus is a lever, so the throw isn't super long like this camera.

You should try out a Balda Super Baldax. I've got one with a f/2.9 lens and coupled rangefinder that's way faster than the Ikonta. It's got the same set to 1 and go frame counter but I don't trust that, I use the red window. It's got that crazy petzval-like look wide open and it's super sharp stopped down. I have a Franka Solida IIIe with the same lens with uncoupled (but super accurate) RF, they're pretty affordable and compact too.

Good to see you back. Don't you think sometimes the challenges you have with one camera come also from shooting with so many different cameras? I have that exact same problem. You are never going back to the same stage of the camera's learning curve you left weeks or months ago. If I was shooting a lot with such camera, to speed up focusing I may want to pre-zone focus first and for the shutter release, not being a Leica, I would assume after some use you would start pushing slightly stronger on that release. Important to mention they are many variants of that camera with different lenses and some including a coupled range-finder which again would smooth things a bit. Last point if I may, it would be interesting to see a color roll to see how that old lens performs. I have a 531/16 that I took to Istanbul with Provia, and that I need to get developed. It might not be the best street photography camera but a cool travel camera to bring around and shoot 120 film.

I have a 532/16 -- similar camera, but with the RF patch in the main viewfinder. I modified the advance stop cam (under the top plate, below the advance knob) with a twelfth notch, and I get twelve on a roll. I do, however, have to start with the frame 1 number *barely* into the window, or the twelfth frame will run off the end of the film. No, this doesn't do anything good for collector value of the camera, but I got it (back in 2005) to use, not to look at or resell. I also have a Mamiya Six, and it's replaced the Super Ikonta B in my regular usage -- IMO, the Zuiko lens is better than the 2.8/80 Tessar, and with film-plane focus with a thumbwheel on the back of the top cover, it's easier to focus than even a single-window Super Ikonta. Mine doesn't have a frame counter, but some versions did (those were too much money, though now that I have one, I might have to look for one that has it), and the last one had automatic shutter cocking as well (but gave up the dual format option).

Excellent photos! I always love the b&w photos taken by these old folders. They just have the better results than modern lenses. A little question here, do you what f-stop you mostly use for 120 and 135 street? They look amazing.

Did you try to use in-ear headphones during photo walks? Big cities can be overwhelmingly loud that takes away the fun from the process.

Good you're making images and vids. You;re right - the 530/16 is not suited to street - portraits, landscapes etc. work. I own a BX/533 - 12 images, heavy, with a non-functioning selenium meter..(speeds 500,200,100,50,25,10,5,2,1, B). Thanks agin.

I've bought a Ikonta A and the manual says that the first shot must be taken when you see the letter "S" through the red window (not the number 1) and then you wind up the roll till you see the number 1 to take the second shot and so on. May be that 's why you take only 11 frames. Thank you for your videos

What you are mainly or firstly complaining about, the fine focusing that a longer travel distance and no be able anticipate the shutter opening, tell us two things; You are using the wrong camera, with features others find beneficial, and you have barely used this camera enough to be familiar with its basic functions. Shoot 25 rolls of film with it, or any other camera, in day to day use, and it will become second nature to your anatomical and mental capacities. Fast is relative to the camera and the period during which it was made, and you need to "train-up" for cameras that are no as intuitive as more modern kit. Buying old rangefinders in medium format is rarely, if ever, a one size fits all and until you take the decision to stick with a camera in a serious way, to actually learn it's operating routine, you will continue to be disappointed, and making reviews on the machine in which you've denied that simple learning process, you put off others that may find it superb in its operation. IMO.

I dislike most photos with modern cars in them.

When I came to New York I have found it's the only place I want to shoot street. I dont have a lot of experience. But I've shoot street in my cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, Chicago, LA Manhattan, Washington DC, Denver, and Souix City. By far Manhattan is my new photo mistress. I love the taste and photo smells in and around every corner. Btw love your videos. Very happy I found your channel.
