Blown away by this Camera | Film Photography | Zeiss Ikonta M
NOTE: FILM DEV INFO: Ilford FP4 Plus rated at ISO 400 developed in Kodak D76 stock solution mixed 1-1 with water. 18 Minutes development time.
The Zeiss Ikonta M a 6x6 medium format folding camera from the early to mid 1950s is an absolute gem capable of producing some very nice photographs. Winter has arrived in my part of the world but conditions were good so lets clean up the Mess (The Ikonta M aka Mess Ikonta) grab some FP4 and drag my captive supporter around the hood in the pursuit of making a few acceptable frames.
Hope you endure.
Tracks by Dan Henig.
Macro shots with the Canon 1DX and a 100mm macro lens
Video recorded on the Canon M50 and a Fimi Palm

I have the sense when I shoot my Olympic TLR, although I can focus through the ground glass, other than that, take a meter reading, set the aperture/shutter speed - shoot.

Shooting with a TLR is awesome, I enjoy it but the two I have both have issues, my best one is an Airesflex model U lovely camera in good light but in crap light it's hard to get focus, I was given a tip by a viewer to replace the fresnal screen, he did that with his and it made a massive difference.

I bought one of these in perfect condition a few years back for $15. I shot a couple of rolls and put it aside. I am inspired to revisit this little gem. Thanks!

That was a bargain Matthew definitely get it dusted off again. Only issue I have with mine actually same issue on my bessa is the shutter speeds from 1/50th and lower stick so they could do with adjusting I contacted a bloke who can do it but he’s so busy it will be a while so I’ll plod on with it. Great camera though love it to bits thanks for taking an interest appreciate it thanks 🙏

Wow! Great video and great pictures! 😊 The dev time in my book for FP4 in D-76 in 1+1 dilution at 20 ℃ is 11 minutes. But your pics are perfect at 18 min, so it can’t be wrong with a longer developing time. Keep it up! 👍🏻

Hey thanks mate sorry should have added to video info the FP4 was rated at iso 400 that’s where the 18 mins comes from I’ve been using FP4 at 400 for a while now loving the results. Sorry for the confusion mate I’ll update the info in description box asap. Thanks for taking a look 📷❤️

Zeiss Ikonta M is one of the best Ikonta cameras, which are folders, medium format in various formats, mostly 6x6cm, with the best equipped with a 4-element Tessar lens. From the 1930s to the mid-1950s, those with rangefinders used an external optical system to allow focusing by turning the front elements of the lens. The final versions, the III and IV used a more lightly built body with a more modern internal system which focuses the lens as a unit, optically superior. This Ikonta M represents a transition between those versions. It still has the over built, heavy body of the original; Ikonta design, but it uses the later focusing system. Sweet. There were not a lot of these M models made, so they are a bit rare and usually pricey.

Cheers Tony yeah the premier was for another video I’d set it all up and let it process the returned next morning to discover the wifi had packed a sad so the upload failed anyway that’s up now. Yeah the Zeiss is gorgeous far easier to focus than the one I’ve just loaded the bessa that one is a bit tricky. I’m loving the square format too. Any camera that gives you the initial spark and a lifelong passion is a good one my dad gave me an old zenit ttl as a kid I hadn’t a clue what to do with it but I remember mincing around with it no film just pretending to be a photographer much like today really 📷❤️

Great stuff Paul! Some lovely shots there. I've got a few Zeiss Ikon folders that look just like that one, but not an M. They're all pretty solid cameras, and all surprisingly good! Interesting the neatsfoot oil... I've been using a clear shoe polish to brighten up the leathers, but might look into that, seems to do a good job. Thanks for the vid, enjoyed it mate!

@@paultaylorphotography9499 Have to laugh a little. Right I have a Konica III , waiting for a Yashica Mat 124G and a Russian 35mm. I collect and like to use. 1965 I was sent on a temporary duty assignment to a naval air station, Midway Island. Bought a Kodak single use b& w camera. I walked around the island and took some photos. I really liked the results. So I'm getting back into film photography and I don`t like color film. I did slides for over 20 years and just can`t go to color film. So b & w is it

wow neatsfoot oil? Including the bellows? Could you share more details? How do you maintain the shutter mechanics?

Way above my limited ability that mate I’m good for splashing oil around and pressing buttons anything even slightly more mechanical than that and my fraudulent bs shines through. I’d suggest finding a camera repairer let them give the camera a Clean lubricate and adjustment we have some in NZ they do a great job for a reasonable price. Thanks for taking a look at my effort’s appreciate it
