Nice bit of film,, with a very pretty bird song in background. Is that a Gerygone (one of them). I can't guess at the other.

They either didn't hatch or the surviving chicks killed them. If food is scarce the siblings with rival with each other and if it's bad enough they will kill each other and eat them.

I'm not 100% sure about New Zealand falcons, but regarding other falcon species, e.g. Peregrines, this talk about killing siblings is so much bullshit. There's no siblicide among them and it's totally normal for falcons to have just one chick hatched out of even 3 eggs. Siblicide is common among eagles, not falcons.

@@j.b.6099Yeah, I was just thinking that. I haven't watched this type of falcons before but other types of falcons and no chicks pecking each other to death like with some eagles/hawks.

Why doesn't the chick move closer to the food? I see that behavior in other birds of prey chicks, it's as though there is some kind of invisible boundary...it's very odd!
