Fun fact: at the end, not only were they playing some of the most famous musical endings (1812 overture, Hallelujah chorus), but they were also recreating some of the most famous drill moves in DCI history. Lots going on there. :-)

Maybe it's just me, but the "crown to crown" drill at the very end seems like a nod to '91 Star of Indiana's famous "cross to cross" set in their closer. After all, Carolina Crown is the contemporary incarnation of Star, or Star of Indiana, Jr. as I like to call them.

2007 carolina crown was the first ever live drum corps show that I saw and it stuck with me ever since. Been a crown fan, and attending live shows at least once a year (outside of covid) since 2006. 2008 Crown is easily one of my top 5 favorite shows by them though. Such a great show

man I marched DCI in 08 for SOA and it was the last year finals was outdoors like you mentioned. We marched in semi finals in the summer heat and sun. I would have probably preferred the AC like they have now. We had some back field sections along with other corps and they sounded good off the back stands. Lucas Oil eats up anything backfield and the acoustics are completely different. This show has some really amazing back facing moments as well that came across so much better in the outdoor stadium.
@seanmundy8952
@seanmundy8952 3 жыл бұрын
I marched PC in 2003 when Finals was in Orlando. When we watched the corps for the remainder of semis and finals following our final performance, we sat in the upper deck and could hear everyone crystal clear. The acoustics from the domed stadiums are garbage by comparison. The nuances of backfield playing are not as clear because the huge curtain sucks up the sound, or the reverb bounces back right into the ensemble. What also annoys me is when the electronics and synths are turned up so loud that they nearly drown out the hornline. It isn't so bad outdoors, but it's amplified with the indoor stadiums. The crowd doesn't sound as loud as an open-air stadium, either. My sincere hope is that they'll go back to outdoor stadiums for Finals in the next couple of years. I'm honestly bored and tired of it always being in Indy every year.

Notice how "stunning" she keeps saying the ballad is. You know this hornline can play loud and in tune, but when you have a hornline that can play at Mezzo Forte to Pianissimo with such control and musicality in those dynamic ranges. Dear God it is moving.

Crown alum from the late 90s. I was at finals in 2008. Finals was supposed to be the inaugural event for Lucas Oil stadium in Indy. The stadium was not ready so this was the last outdoor finals in Bloomington Indiana. I love Lucas Oil but there is nothing quite like outdoor drum corps.

Agreed. My first finals at Indy I was concerned because I had played in domes before in high school. Unfortunately, the echo was a distraction for some time until my brain/ears sort of adjusted to it. I think it's a great venue for holding off weather (not to be underestimated) but I really do not enjoy the echo.

2008 was such a great year for Drum Corps. Crown, Blue Devils, and Cavaliers kept trading places all summer long, then Phantom Regiment went 3rd in Quarter Finals, Second in Semis, and won on finals night. I remember talking to our visual caption head (I marched in this show -- I'm laying on the 30 yard line at 7:02 of Claire de Lune) on finals night and him saying this year was so crazy and that literally any of the top four could have won in a normal year, but the talent and the design was so great that year, someone had to win. 2004 was a similar situation between Cavaliers, SCV, and Blue Devils. Great performances all around.

In case you were wondering what some of the classical pieces being played in this mash-up: Leonard Bernstein Overture to "Candide" with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" Rossini's Barber of Seville Overture, Mendelssohn's "Wedding March " (I know I'll miss some.) The quiet part you loved combined Debussy's "Clair de Lune" with Bernstein's "Somewhere" from West Side Story. Liszt "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2", Aaron Copland's "Simple Gifts" from Appalachian Spring, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah. I miss live shows.
