You should see the players warming up playing "catch" a couple hours before the game. Balls hitting gloves sounds like a target range. They play major league "catch" every day. That's why they can make these incredible throws.

As to the split decisions as to where to throw the ball, you’re taught to think ahead of the pitch as to where you’re going with it in certain situations if it comes to you; it helps with the speed of the decision.

I spent a good chunk of my life playing organized baseball. There is no way to explain the thought process behind a throw. You just do it. You just zero in on your target and your body does the rest. There is no thinking i can possible describe that goes into it. As for knowing where to throw the ball, because there isn't enough time to think about it, fielders are taught to go over the potential scenarios before the ball is pitched. So they know before it happens if the ball goes here, I throw it there and so forth. I was a catcher for 15 years. I took it as a personal offense if someone tried to steal and a nothing made me happier than gunning down a base runner.

Hey Courtney. In terms of speed of the throws, there are variables like distance etc. But the first one that they showed was the fastest outfield throw recorded at I think 105.5 mph. I was thinking with your interest in sports and your time spent in Japan a retrospective of highlights of Ichiro Suzuki would be good. He had a several year career in Japan and then got the chance to play in MLB. Set several records as a hitter, and had one of the best arms ever. If you do a YT search on Ichiro highlights there are a number of choices. I will leave it to you to decide which ones are the right length etc. Enjoy!!!

Trust me, that ball hurts. My home field in high school (I played 2nd) had a nasty bump. Not once did I stop a ground ball with my glove... always my body.

Great stuff again Courtney, love great defense in baseball. It's worth noting that Rick Ankiel started his career as a pitcher. He transitioned to the outfield because he couldn't throw the ball over the plate to save his life. Nailed it perfectly from the outfield though, many times. I'd suggest checking out Ichiro Suzuki. Amazing arm, which you saw there in the video, even better with the bat, and such a spectacular person on and off the field. His story is deservedly legendary.

You see how close all of those plays are, just think how radically different the game would be if the bases were 89 or 91 feet apart instead of the perfect 90 that the game's originators came up with.

The throw from third base over to first is really long. These men make it look easy.??? Good stuff.

Each team plays 162 games in a season (not including the playoffs or Spring Training). So 30 teams, at 162 games per pair, gives you 2,430 games in a season. With that said, these "cannon throws" from the outfield - particularly the deep parts of the outfield - that result in the runner being thrown out at home plate are very rare. It's decidedly not the norm. If you watch a lot of baseball, you will see it, but not often. Much more common are the slick double plays, or plays by the shortstop, or the catcher throwing out a runner trying to steal. Those are my favorite plays. Pitching is a fun part of it too. I like to see good pitching.

When the outfielders warm up they throw the ball to each other. However, there are three outfielders. The left fielder will sometimes play catch with a ball girl to warm up.

What's impressive about the Bo Jackson throw was that he was essentially playing on an reconstructed hip. This was after his hip injury in football which ended his career. Even more impressive was that throw was flat footed and the runner while not exceptionally fast, had speed. A better throw when Jackson was healthy, was the throw from left to get a speedy Harold Reynolds (Who still is upset about it after all these years)

I love when people don't understand how hard a ball is thrown that it is literally a flatline and barely drops... Especially with spin and wind resistance yet they hit their target from 200 ft away as they say on a bullet... (not at Courtney, just people who don't understand the game).

To your comment that "they always seem to make up for it": I played 3rd base myself so I had to make long throws a lot. However, when you make an error, it instantly triggers so much adrenaline than you temporarily gain superhuman strength. I remember several occasions when I bobbled a ball and when I recovered and threw it I could feel my body bypassing all of its safety measures and using every ounce of my strength. Also in those instances, I cannot remember seeing where I was throwing, instead I just instinctively knew exactly where my target was and only locked on with my eyes after I had released the ball.

When I first started playing baseball for the "Babe Ruth" league(teenagers), the players there were using metal spikes on their shoes for better traction. I was playing infield second base and had a ball thrown to me to get a runner out on second base. It was a force out with a runner already on first base so all I had to do was tag second base with the ball and the runner would be out. I stood above second base waiting to be thrown the ball, but the runner decided to try to take me out of the play by sliding at me with his metal spikes up in the air at my legs above the base. He hit my leg with his metal spikes and tore a big chunk of meat from my shin causing me to leave the base in pain. The umpire called him safe. I learned a big lesson that day. Anything or anybody blocking any part of the base paths with any part of their body is fair game for the runner to attack and knock out of the base path. If you watch the first base player, he places his foot on the side of the first base when another player throws him the ball and them quickly removes it after the runner is called out. He doesn't want his foot stepped on with metal spikes, either.

I always wondered how umpires made calls the are so close, when they can't see the ball and the guys foot hit the base at the same time, my aunts husband works as an umpire says, they heard the sound of ball hitting the glove while they watch the foot and base..

I always hate these videos because none of them ever put the video of Jeff Francoeur in his rookie year for Atlanta. Game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, twice a ball is hit his way to the warning track with Luis Gonzalez trying to tag up from third to score. BOTH TIMES Francoeur nails him with perfect throws to the plate. No hop, from the warning track! I had never seen anything like that before or since. At least not in the same game. I think the problem is that the video is damn near impossible to find, but I distinctly remember seeing it on Baseball Tonight and Sportscenter when it happened. He had an absolute cannon of an arm!

The players are completely and thoroughly studied and analyzed by the coaches before they are chosen to play a particular positiion for the team.

When you are seeing these fast throws youre missing out on one major detail... The catches from the first baseman with those throws. Down from a full split and bringing up 1 or 2 bounce throws. Check that aspect out.

I had such a school girl crush on Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners.

Many of these throws are within a step or two. It is like I heard an announcer say once play the game. Now you see why these men are in the majors. Notice the ball is often are the side that makes the tag easier.
