For a "Kiwi" (if you do not mind), it is really easy to understand us (and vice versa). Similar amounts of people who like to jump into the ocean, climb mountains, kayak and raft down rivers (I have worked with many New Zealanders both here in Norway and in Nepal doing just that). We have fiords and glaciers (for you on the south island). We like to backpack around the world. We are egalitarian societies. We both enjoy our beer (my first ever evening in Auckland caused me to be served drunk by fine kiwis welcoming a friend they wanted to know from abroad). We have really great passports to own as small nations. Since we do not start wars with people, we are received with a smile pretty much all over the place. We have pretty good educational levels (yes I have worked with more of you in the science of arctic environments, marine science and climatology) As almost twins and antipodes the major difference is that you drive British style while we drive European style. And a person from New Zealand is more approachable. We are rumoured to be more introverted up here (until being brought beer, as you clearly have figured out down there. More similarities: We both have good experiences with female political leaders. We both have really cool indigenous people that we both have treated less well in the past, but we managed to start learning with time. I am joking a bit, but I think I can say that when travelling - for a Norwegian to be in the same space as a New Zealander is an instant success - and this goes both ways. The general approach to life seems to just fit. Regarding Norwegians paying hard for petrol - this is a long-term plan to avoid turning into Saudi Arabia. We do not use oil wealth to reduce taxes (that would have caused catastrophic inflation, just ask our UK friends who were less smart about handling their natural resources by sending all the capital to foreign companies) - we save the cash. When you are born in Norway now, you are instantly worth ca 200,000 USD (over 300k of your pounds, I suppose). No, we can not cash it out - but together we own ca 1.5% of everything existing on all the stock markets on the planet. Instead, we have now gone electric (more than 90% of new private cars in Norway now come with a plug). We work hard, pay hard taxes and play hard with what is left. Again our shared egalitarian systems trying to keep the distance between the rich and the poor small. But yeah - for any kiwi watching, blending in here in Norway is perhaps the smoothest landing you will ever feel. This may be controversial, but I think you will feel more at home compared to even the home of your now very new but not so young King. Will I say Norway is easier to blend into than Australia for you? No. But I will say that for a Norwegian, NZ is as close as you can be to home while being far away.

Norway has high taxes on gasoline because it incentivizes progress. We started the production of predictable renewable energy eight hundred years ago and we know what that's worth. But the world doesn't stop consuming oil and gas even if we don't have to, So we sell the oil and gas to the countries who wants it, but we reinvest our profits in wind power in Scotland or fisheries in Canada. We may make mistakes along the way, but the Norwegians care. Norwegian honor can be a bit difficult to understand, but it's really quite beautiful. If you investigate Norway and boil it down to its essence, you will find that everything in this country is based on the princple that you will get a new day tomorrow, which is clean and untarnished. I am proud of that.

"Tap water" really depends on the source of that water. Many places in Norway get their tap water from glaciers and streams that does not need purification. This water can be a very high quality water with good mineral content and otherwise very pure and healthy directly from nature. If you sell it in bottles you have not really "tricked" anyone, unless you have told them lies in the marketing. VOSS water is good water, but because of the topography and weather in Norway this type of nice water is available a lot of places around Norway. But, in the more populated areas of Norway, especially in the south-east, the water comes from lakes or reservoirs that needs to be filtered and treated with chorine to make the tap water drinkable. All tap water has to be of drinkable quality. If you don't want traces of chlorine in your drink then you have to buy bottled water in these areas of Norway just like other parts of the world. Some 10-15 years ago there were a fake news campaign that made norwegians question their tap water. The campaign was paid for by the bottled water industry, and cleverly fed through news agencies that are usually trusted. The scheme was exposed, and government declared that tap water in Norway is safe to drink direct from the tap. But of course, the discussion are still alive in some areas of the country. There are so many different sources of tap water in Norway, so there are some variations from place to place.

In the late 80s, she rejected a multi million contract in LA and went home. She's still performing.

My grandfather with family to the US around 1920, My mother was born in Brooklyn NY in the terrible year of 1929, the year if the crash on the stock exchange,, My grandmother had a restaurant in Brooklyn the terrible year of 1929m the year of he crash on Wall Street. Norway has a very bloody history unfortunately. It really started with the unification of the various kingdoms of the Viking age thanks to single king which stopped most bloodshed for a few years until the England invasions as the Vikings hit England which took out at least several regional kings there. Even torturing one badly. It just was a free blood bath out there. The Norwegian king turned unfavorable later on and was killed on throne. Starting the cycle all over again. They got their act together eventually but it took so long.
