The other two are rattled. Mills don't talk nonsense to show off like Goldie and JK. They must realize they can't talk the AB's into the semi's. But they will have a long time to talk about the AB's weaknesses when the Irish or the French or SA beat them again.

Indeed. Mils is highly rated as a commentator in South Africa. Sadly, the other two are not. Oh, and just as a side: one of the reasons the Oceanians (once known as the All Blacks) is facing an uphill (future) battle is because their three academies (Tonga, Samoa and Fiji) have now gone solo with increasingly spectacular results. The islanders are now finding much more lucrative opportunities in Europe (and in their national teams) and will undoubtedly find New Zealand (and the All Blacks) far less attractive in years to come.

Ireland did not have good teams in the past. What Ireland had was overhyped teams with two or three talented players. Irish rugby has been evolving for the last three decades. Rugby in the professional era still growing in ireland but still behind Gaelic football, hurling and soccer...seems like no matter what ireland do, taking into account their playing pool, these guys struggle to give the team and indeed irfu, the credit they deserve..lesson for irfu, with similar competition player pool wise, is to look at what's happening to the great Australia. The real question is are SA better than the ABs. I think at this time they are head and shoulders above the ABs. Based on that Ireland will beat ABs, not by many but definitely more than 5 points. The ONLY thing that will stop Ireland is their mindset of historical failures at QF and personally I think they have put many many past failures to the sword this last 2 years - there is no better year for them to conquer this hurdle. @@lilalife666 Time has shown otherwise! It seemed to us South Africans that we weren't besotted with winning the Irish game because we realize that the RWC is a marathon and going all out in a pool game risks players getting injured or red-carded. There was some suggestions that we would prefer France in the quarter finals. Where things stand now, 3 of the 4 semi-finalists lost a pool game and of the 4 teams that one all their pool games, only one survives. I think New Zealand rugby will struggle to recover going forward. They are now isolated from global rugby, what Super Rugby offered was tours and strong competition. In 2025 South Africa will leave the Rugby Championship and join the 6 nations. There's no will from South Africa to rejoin the South and we are looking to expand into other markets as our game needs to grow! Be realistic now, Australia needs to make a real 180 as do Argentina Japan and the islands in order to have a league going forward... we talking a few years and alot of commitment from all parties. Without competition NZ is going nowhere!

South African teams only won three Super Rugby titles since 1996 and last won it in 2009. NZ's decline is more kids are choosing basketball and rugby league. There was a time when NZ use to win the U20's world cup every year and there was an endless conveyor belt of young talent coming through. They haven't won the U20's world cup for several years. I live in Auckland and our local rugby league team get far bigger crowds than the Blues rugby union team who are also based in Auckland. Former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen even admitted recently that rugby league is far more entertaining than rugby union. There's too much kicking, scrum resets and stoppages in union. I've played rugby league and it's harder than rugby union.

Not saying that South Africa aren’t still favourites but they are vulnerable under pressure, we saw that against The All Blacks in Auckland and now the Irish. As a neutral I agree that the Ireland v SA game was a step back for SA - it took the shine off their recent dominant performances, and showed that, under pressure, and against a side that matched them in every aspect of the game, including the 7-1 nuke squad, there was no other secret sauce for them to turn to. While it certainly isn't a case of the Emperor not having _any_ clothes, it _was_ a case of showing that the Emperor's clothes aren't quite as fancy as he would have you believe. Knowing your opponent isn't invincible is a lot better than fearing that they are.

I can't agree that it was a step back...not saying you are wrong though because thats obviously just my opinion. That was very very poor game management which the coaches will wear, which they will know what needed to be different, and because blame largely lies with them, I don't think it really knocks the player confidence, not against a team such as Ireland. I have always thought there is less margin for error in the SA game plan/style so the message is not that the style doesn't work, it's that it needs to be better executed and managed. If it comes off I would back a win, if even slightly off its not impossible we get hammered.

The Irish played the ref really well. They milked the ruck penalties both attacking and defensive. Not blaming the ref just saying the Irish managed him better than SA. @@pauljansen6650that’s not correct, Paul, Ireland uncharacteristically missed their first 6 line outs in that game, several of which were near the SA line and, in the normal course, result in Ireland getting over the line. In the same way SA kicking misfired, the Irish line out misfired. If Ireland correct the line out (which they likely will), SA fixing it’s kicking does not automatically put SA out in front. @8:00 tougher tournament competition is essential. But team cohesion appears to be the magic stuff (according to data analytics). The AB's need to build a team from players who play with each other almost every week. That can be done with combos in the forwards and backs, but that also starts with fewer top tier franchises. NZ should have three SupR teams, a North, Central and South. then cohesion centres of units of key positions from each franchise... or something like this together with similar cohesion in youth development. Gone are the days when we can hope to be world No.1 by assembling a team of talented superstars and hope they gel together.

Players like Aki as an example dont get a chance to rise to the top in NZ. Fringe Super Rugby players are often targeted by NH clubs and are left with a choice of chasing the dream of an AB jersey or heading north for far better money. With that also comes more playing time at a very competitive level which eventually makes them into better players. Pretty easy choice for a bloke in his early 20s from a humble background. Unless NZR can offer more money to these players and set them up financially for the future the liklihood of this ever changing is next to nothing. Eventually NZR will have to consider changing their stance on selection of foreign based players but thats opening a can of worms in itself.

Ireland kick to corner on almost every chance they have, knowing their lineout maul and/or set moves can be so effective for 7 points. They even did this 3 times in the SA match, eventho' they came away with nothing. That said, the key to this Irish team (which none of the boys in this analysis mentioned) is their pure accuracy. They are drilled to almost perfection. And the greatest compliment I can give to NZ is that we learned this from you over the years, and we've taken it a step further. Irish sysem has been in development for 10yrs..south sea players mentioned were absorbed,.moulded and fulfilled their potential in this system. granted 6 nations and European cup helped channel their development but it wasn't the seed...

When you play for a country in the main team you should never be allowed to play for any other country. This is not franchise, this is your country!! Please just remove that idiotic rule.

I'm not saying this as an arrogant South African but since we've left super rugby Australian and All Black quality of rugby seemed to have dropped a bit. I think there is a lot of politics involved as well but I absolutely loved the super rugby tournament, like some many others. For the southern hemisphere to become the dominant force in rugby again, SA, NZ, Auss and possible Argentina need to go back to basics.

NZ are being wrote off. They are very capable of playing our Ireland team off the field in that 1/4 final. They will be delighted that all the fuss is over SA, Ireland and France

A lot of waffle from former great players. At least Mils still has a realistic perspective of what's actually happening on and off the pitch. It's the same worldwide - old, big-name pundits talking hot air on TV.

Yeah nah, I think that the only reason those kiwi players in the Irish team are doing well is because the Irish pack is delivering a solid platform, so be careful Ireland the Ab,s know what needs to be done! ( so does the south Africans)

Knowing how to do some and then actually carrying that out effectively is not the same thing. NZ rugby is not as good as it was 8 years ago and has been in decline. I suspect Ireland will fold in the knock out stages but then again they surprised me with their tactics against SA.

It was a cracking game and a great win for Ireland but had South Africa had a world class goal kicker in the side the result could have been different.
