After 3 months how well do you like this over the opal? I have the opal that is about 2 years old. It seems to need to be cleaned every 6 weeks or so now which is annoying. Have you cleaned the newair yet? How does that process compare to the opal?

Our stand alone ice maker was almost $2000 at full price and we got it around $1400 as a previous year model and while the price difference is enormous to JK's it's a Godsend to never worry about filling up or worrying about every running out of ice. We have literally never came close to running out of ice even with company over. Combine this with our larger waterless/Iceless Refrigerator and it could be the start of a "dream kitchen".

For $1800 you can get a commercial Manitowoc ice machine that makes 137 pounds a day and stores up to 90 pounds. When you think about the difference in price, that countertop device is a toy. The price for that is outrageous.

Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing an advertisement for a machine like that at $1800, unless you are referring to used. By the way, even their smallest units would take up the space of an oven.

This Ice Maker left us tiny bits of plastic in the water trough and imbedded in the nugget ice itself. New Air says they knew of the problem and would send me a replacement. They also tried to coerce me to write them a glowing review in order to provide me with free shipping. (I have the e-mails to prove it) The new ice maker arrived only to find the same issue. Good luck with this product.

Awesome to see a video on this unit. Your video seems to be the first one on this new unit. It seems similar to the Opal you reviewed 2 years ago. Same tech and they both have the same two tube setup in the back. This one has no front window, and the Opal had a self cleaning feature. Wish this one had that. But this one seems to hold more ice. The $70 coupon is nice. A few observations if I may... 1-I wish you would have used a sound meter to test the hum/noise coming from the unit. Is it as loud or less than the Opal? 2-How is the cleaning process? Maybe post a follow-up video on the cleaning process. Overall very good video.
@JordanKeyes
@JordanKeyes 4 жыл бұрын
I believe I had a clip showing the sound level using my Apple Watch, but I guess it didn't make it into the final video. Just tested it again, and the loudest I've heard is 70-72dB with my watch less than 1ft from the ice maker. About 6ft away, it drops to 55-57dB. The user manual mentions a self-cleaning function: 1. Plug in the unit, keep it in standby mode (red LED ring) 2. Hold the power button for 3 seconds to start the self-cleaning. LED should go blue and purple 3. Let the cleaning process run at least 30 seconds 4. Hold the power button for 3 seconds to stop the self-cleaning process. There's a separate process for cleaning the exterior and interior that involves wiping it down with detergent and water.

@@JordanKeyes That is good to now, thanks for the update. I'm curious about something though, I was looking over the unit on their webpage and noticed that it has two hoses in the back like the Opal. Being that one of the tubes on the Opal is to connect to their external water tank, I wonder if the Newair offers a similar function with one of those hoses to attach to an external tank of their own. But I do not see any reference on their webpage regarding the use of the hoses except to drain. So far it's between this unit and the Opal, but even without an internal filter, see through front window and an external tank, I'm really liking this unit more. Again thanks for the video and updates.

They aren’t though... there’s MANY options online for as low as $106 & it makes ice within 7 mins. As well as many other options in the $110-200 price zone. I just checked Amazon and there is literally 11 options all with 5 star reviews under $150... so I guess your just not checking the right places? Or idk ?? Lol but there is definitely many affordable ice machines now a days.

This is a NUGGET ice maker. Its a different type of ice, and its not the same process as the ice maker in your freezer. To make things more difficult is the fact that nugget ice cannot be stored in the freezer, and needs to be allowed to melt. These are not typical ice makers, they are NUGGET ice makers. They are similar to the ice made in restaurants and hospitals. Thats why they aren't cheap. The commercial units cost $3500 and up.

Thanks for the video. If you were to buy a new nugget ice machine today which one would you buy the Opal or the NewAir?
@JordanKeyes
@JordanKeyes 3 жыл бұрын
They're both pretty similar in terms of the ice they make, and the fact that, unfortunately, they don't have a long-term refrigerant option, so the ice immediately starts melting. I think between the two, the NewAir keeps ice for a bit longer, because the basket is more contained within the unit, so I'd probably go with that. I definitely prefer being able to see exactly how much ice is in the unit, like the Opal, but I think it melted quite a bit faster.

Wow. I guess I never really thought about how expensive an ice maker could be. Is there like an ice maker monopoly out there that artificially increases the price of "Make water cold" machines? I just don't understand how this can be 5 times the price of a freezer...
@Greybeardmedic
@Greybeardmedic 2 жыл бұрын
That's because the process for making nugget ice is vastly different than making chunks of ice that are stored in the freezer. Nugget ice is chewable, its easier to use for making frozen drinks, and it cannot be stored in a freezer because it simply clumps up and becomes a huge iceberg and useless for drinks.

I think something like this is best used where space is at a premium, otherwise not worth it. All stand-alone ice-maker units usually are at-least $400 if they work AT ALL, so while the price IS steep "in general", not the worst for an ice-maker.
