This is part 2 of this fire. Part 1 is located here • Newark Ohio Fire Depar...
On April 30th at 2036 hours NFD units were dispatched to 643 McKinley Avenue for a report of a commercial building fire. While responding, Dispatch reported additional calls reporting smoke and fire. This building is a 100 x 50 lightweight wood frame metal building that was an auto repair shop. The building was not occupied at the time of the fire.
The following equipment was on the initial assignment:
Battalion-1 with a crew of 1 (Me)
Rescue-1 (engine/rescue) with a crew of 4
Tower-1 (105 ft platform) with a crew of 4
Engine-2 with a crew of 3
Medic-2 (firefighter/paramedics) with a crew of 2
Ladder-3 (100 ft ladder) with a crew of 3
Medic-3 with a crew of 2
Engine-52 (Heath FD) with a crew of 2
Rescue-51 (Heath FD-engine/rescue) with a crew of 3
The working fire assignment brought an additional 2 engines
Rescue-101 (Engine/Rescue from Madison Twp FD) with a crew of 3
Rescue-201 (Engine/Rescue from Granville FD) with a crew of 4
Upon arrival of Battalion-1 heavy smoke was showing from the entire structure and fire was visible from a window on the back/Charlie side of the building.
The first arriving fire apparatus was Rescue-1. They pulled a 2.5 inch blitz line and also pulled a Blitzfire portable monitor to attack the fire. Tower-1 positioned in the street on the Alpha side of the building and attacked the fire with an elevated master stream. Ladder-3 positioned on the Bravo/Charlie corner and attacked the fire with a 2.5 blitz line and one elevated master stream.
The fire was contained to the building and one car that was parked next to the building on the Charlie side in about 25 minutes. The building was a total loss. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
No firefighters or civilians were injured at this fire.
This video was recorded with a Motorola Z Force Droid cell phone, which limits the length of each video to about 30 minutes.

Wow a very tough fire with limited water, well done on protecting exposures. I am a volunteer fire fighter in Australia. I am trying to figure out how you’re job commander works. In Victoria (state of Australia) it is very rare for a commander to go to a fire, they only attend fires that are going to be over 6 hours long. Where I am we have 1 staffed brigade with 2 pumpers, 1 ladder platform. And many volunteers stations (about 10-15KM from each other). The ladder platform that the staff has to support 1/2 of out state (100,000km^2). All volunteers have a tanker and some are luck to have pumpers also, not all have BA including my brigade. The way the system works where I am. The fire appliance on scene takes command until they feel like it is to big for then to handle. The command person is always walking around, and never sits in a vehicle. How this fire would have played out where I am. Fire location in the staffed area. The staff would be on screen at about 7-8 minutes and start direct attach with live real and then set up 38mm attack lines, and start to attack the fire. By the time the pumper would be running low on water there would be 2 lines of 64mm run to the hydrant and connected to the truck and fire would be out soon after. But if all went wrong and the volunteers brigades would be called and arrive by about the 20-22 minutes mark and would then assist. Equipment that we have that is different Live real: is a always charged hose line attached to the truck. images.app.goo.gl/QYX4dxYULWJBGGZ79 Pumper: is the same as you’re fire fighting truck. (3000 litres) Tanker: is fire truck designed fore Grass and scrub fire, but is a good all rounder (3000-4000 litres) 38mm: primarily direct attach hose 64mm: used for connecting to hydrants and bigger hose for direct attach Hydrant: usually a stand pipe or ball, where there is 2x 64mm outlets. images.app.goo.gl/4B13e8YtiC9GKPJM8 Where our brigade is we are in a fully urban environment with over 100,000 people living in our town. I don’t want anyone to feel like we are under resourced we just use our resources in the most efficient way possible.

First off I want to send my deepest sympathies to the owner of this business, tough loss in a bad economy. Chief, being a layman I have a question for you, what takes an engine to a medic? I understand Rescue, ladder, engine but am slightly confused on why some of the units are referred to medic and some are not. Is it because one or some of the FF are EMT trained? Amazing job by the way, on an extremely hot fire, so glad no one was injured! 🖤❤️🖤
@John-cq3hk
@John-cq3hk 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not in Ohio , but my guess would be that the Medic is in reference to an ambulance unit that is staffed with 2 paramedic firefighters or EMT firefighters. In Texas all firefighters are are either a EMT or a Paramedic.
@wsettles3
@wsettles3 4 жыл бұрын
Nana: in this case A "Medic" is the FD ambulance/squad/Medic/EMS unit staffed by typically two FF/EMT-P. They respond to all fire calls and are assigned as needed. They do carry their fire gear on the Medic vehicle. While working the fire job that Medic/Ambulance is OOS, not available for other calls. These vehicles/crews also provide ready assistance to fire victims or injured firefighters.
@nanachick05
@nanachick05 4 жыл бұрын
William Settles from my understanding that is rescue. So I’m not sure how they identify in his department that’s why I was asking Chief Decker.
@wsettles3
@wsettles3 4 жыл бұрын
@@nanachick05 Sorry if I confused you. In our area a Rescue is usually an Engine that is equipped with additional rescue equipment such as hydraulic/electric cutting tools, ropes/rigging equipment and other specialized "rescue" equipment not normally found on a standard Engine. Other areas/larger cities may have specialized Rescue vehicles that are not pump/tank/hose equipped (thus not an Engine). It's all semantics so I suppose this equipment, in our area, is technically a Rescue Engine as it does both jobs well. Another example of multi-purpose is a "Quint"; this is an Engine with a mandated size of pump, hose, tank water, aerial ladder and ground ladders, thus performing five separate functions. Again semantics but very specific. And regional names/nomenclature enter into the mix as well; around here a "Tanker" carries a large amount of water, typically over 1,000gals up to around 3,000gals. In other areas of the country this same vehicle/apparatus is a "Tender". Hopefully, I made clear the ability of the "Medic" personnel to merge into firefighting mode assisting other crew assignments thus bolstering on-scene strength.

Chief, thanks for the videos. Are sprinkler systems required? Would a sprinkler system limited the damage?
@BMRHomesInc
@BMRHomesInc 4 жыл бұрын
Commercial building sprinkler systems do not use residential water connections for the system. The sprinkler system has a connection to the same main water system that the fire hydrant is attached to. In short a commercial sprinkler system would have helped keep the fire contained to give the fire fighters a shot at saving the building. This is my opinion, Chief I defer to your opinion.
@clickbaitbutton2485
@clickbaitbutton2485 3 жыл бұрын
Bill Williams I am also not an expert, but as far as i know sprinkler systems are not actually intended to douse a fire. They are actually intended to keep a building from flashing out which means you can see fire more then smoke. This is the first step in a fully involved structure fire like the video shows and almost always ends in the building burning down as shown. Also the sprinklers produce lots of steam which suffocates the fire and keeps it at a manageable stage where the fire department can fight an offensive fire where they go inside with the hoses instead of staying out. definitely worth putting on any new building, but sometimes retrofit systems cost more than he actual building because they need to be connected to the water main. This is from personal research and i am not in the industry at all so if someone says differently listen to them not me.

Chief Decker quick question. Does your department mandate use if mask and SCBA anytime in a smoke area and do you use decon of anyone performing ventilation it any other interior operations? Appreciate your help and admire your mastery of incident command. I was trained in NIMS at the 300 and 400 level and worked with our Cert program in Arizona. @nicholasuszko

I believe it has to do with the nozzle on the end. Some units have if preconnected so you can just grab place and put water on the fire fast, "hence the blitz".

A blitzfire is name brand nozel designed and manufacturer by a company in Valparaiso Ind. T.F.T TASK FORCED TIPS . It's a one man portable monitor that is free standing. This is so NOT a criticism. I a.m just curious. Lately I have noted that NFD ( an impressive Department ) does Not vertically ventilate. ( climb a ladder to the roof above the fire , cut a square or rectangle using a chain saw , then pike polls or whatever they are called now , and punching through the remainder of the Hole , allowing hot gases and fire to ventilate ) I subscribe to Stockton CA FIRE dept’s Channel As well which is Good but Not As Good As this Channel. Due to You Tube’s algorythm’s I Also get a great deal of other FIRE Videos. They , As are NYFD , LA City and LA County vertically ventilate with impressive results When I was a Reserve FF and in taking a few FIRE SCIENCE classes before the EMS bug hooked me forever I was taught this ventilation technique. The interesting thing is that despite the lack of vertical ventilation the working fires are extinguished expeditiously and more importantly , SAFELY. If someone in this Community can explain this I would be most greatful. Very Respectfully , Mike
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 4 жыл бұрын
On an ordinary home, there are typically windows in every room. So I can have a crew horizontally ventilate and create emergency egress at the same time. This requires less time and effort than vertical ventilation. If I was dealing with a billing the did not have windows in the immediate vicinity of the fire then roof ventilation would be the tactic. And I am not saying that I am right, that is just how I operate. Everybody does things just a little bit.
@mikepaz4870
@mikepaz4870 4 жыл бұрын
David Decker Thank you Chief. I Also note that NFD is atypical from other Departments. You and your MEN ( writ large ) and women treat EVERY structure - dwelling FIRE As though it belonged to a member. They do minimal damage .....even taking out a window its done to preserve the frame. Other FF’s seem to relish breaking windows , doors , fences and cause huge secondary water damage. Whereas NFD goes to great lengths to preserve As well As protect. Your FIRE Dispatchers deserve kudos As well....they truly Care , they anticipate the fireground’s needs and do an amazing job. You can have the best apparatus and FF’s but IF you have bad Dispatchers all is lost. Very Respectfully , Mike
