Let's Walk!

Let's Walk!

Күн бұрын

Join me for a walk around the centre of the windswept Northumberland town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, located just east of the great coal mining hub of Ashington. Home to centuries of history, striking landmarks and a number of unique sights, there's a lot to see in Newbiggin, a perhaps less-known but still fascinating town!
As we walk around Newbiggin, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including St. Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin Bay, Newbiggin Maritime Centre, Newbiggin Beach, Newbiggin Lifeboat Station, The Couple Scuplture, The Coble Pub, Newbiggin Bandstand, Newbiggin Piazza, The Old Ship Pub, The Queen Victoria Pub, The Queen's Head Pub, The Cresswell Arms Pub and the Time Capsule Stone on Church Point.
Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Newbiggin:

What a lovely video, my Mum is originally from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. I lived there for a short time years and years ago. Thank you for sending me down memory lane. Cheers!!

Lovely little seaside town, very underrated. If the car parks in Amble and Warkworth are too busy, I’d highly recommend popping down the coast to see this hidden gem.

That's a great suggestion! The Northumberland coast is littered with too many seaside towns to count, but Newbiggin certainly doesn't get the press of some of its more northerly counterparts, even though it really is a fascinating place to visit :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

I can imagine! Church Point is properly scenic whether on a sunny day or some day slightly more windswept - you're very fortunate to have stayed there :) Otterburn I've heard many good things about - looking forward to checking it out at some time in the near future! Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video :)

Really enjoyed the video (after just having watched the Blyth one). My wife and I are frequent visitors to the town and always enjoy a pint (or so) and a coffee in the Queen's Head - can't wait for it to reopen. It's a fascinating little town which we will never tire of visiting.

Thank you so much! A short hop up from Blyth, I'm sure you're more than aware of how nice a day out Newbiggin can offer by the seaside - and of course the chance for a pint in one of its many wonderful pubs :) Thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

@@LetsWalkUK You're most welcome - I'm so pleased that somebody chose to celebrate the virtues of such a wonderful town and showcase them to the world. Have you considered adding vocal commentaries to complement your videos - yes, I know you're probably shy and I'd personally baulk at the prospect of doing that but you've taken the plunge in making the videos and adding a written commentary so why not go the whole hog and transform your wonderful videos into something sensational?

Thanks again for the video. I had a great 24 hours here, stayed at the Old Ship (thanks to Jackie and all the friendly locals), dined at Due Fratelli (seafood linguini) and breakfasted at Endeavour (thanks to Michelle). Walked around the churchyard and read gravestones. People seemed either to get to a few weeks or months old, or into their 20s, or into their 70s and 80s, even an old lady of 95 with not much in between. I shall come again!

That sounds like it was a great stay indeed! The churchyard too is a great window into Newbiggin of the past as you mention, and along with the many eateries you visited you certainly had a good look at this lovely seaside town :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Brought up as a child in Newbiggen, many days playing in the "big dipper" and at "the needles eye ". before the new promenade wall was built. Returned to live here in 2020 Appreciating the small town and it's history much more now after having lived abroad for 40 years. People are very friendly and Christmas Eve in St Bartholomew on the church point is a must!!! Very pretty.

I am a fan of KZfaq video tours: this is one of the best, because the light is beautiful, and it feels like a leisurely stroll before dusk. John Braine was working in the branch library in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, when he received news that Room at the Top was to be published. Later he transferred Newbiggin to North Yorkshire in another novel, The Queen of Distant Country: this book features The Coble pub. I would very much like to attend a service in Saint Bartholomew's Church: I will drive down from my home in Scotland.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video - interestingly this video was filmed around midday, though in the winter in Northumberland that's not too far away from dusk :) Fascinating to know of John Braine's link with Newbiggin, I didn't know about that! I'm sure you'd have a wonderful time if you came to Newbiggin to visit. Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comments!

Thank you! Most interesting. Tomorrow (15/09/2021) I shall be driving to here from Ravenglass on the West coast at the start of a 6-day odyssey driving between here and Skegness. I will be staying at the Old Ship. BTW I am a nerd and impressed jointly with your walking speed and the smoothness of the video. Once again, thanks.

Redcar lifeboat station is from 1802 but it has moved buildings. Many years before Newbiggin's . Maybe Newbiggin's is the oldest one in continuous use. Coble boats are designed to be dragged across the sand, that's their main attribute. But I'm amazed I've never been to Newbiggin, it looks great
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I imagine Newbiggin's lifeboat station takes the crown of 'oldest operating' because it's in the same building as when it opened? But either way Redcar is indeed as old as it gets when it comes to lifeboats when you say :) I didn't know that about coble boats either - thanks for sharing :) I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - Newbiggin is a fascinating and spectacular place to visit!

At 17:24, a time capsule from 2000 to be open in 2100 ? Whose idea ? At that time, they will just watch KZfaq old archives !

Ha ha - back in 2000 I don't imagine anybody could have foreseen KZfaq in the way it is today, but even so I do wonder what's in that time capsule - it would be fascinating to see opened in 79 years' time :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

It’s a pity that the ubiquitous Air B+B’s are creeping into the town driving the genuine Northumbrian’s out…I hope the Town Council spots the problem before it gets out of hand. If you’re lucky you can still catch the local French like burr in the Northumbrian accent…sadly it seems to be on the decline with the rise of TV and the internet. I went there when I was a kid in the early 1960s, digging in the deep sand on the beach I found a Fairbairn Sykes commandos knife with a chunk out of the handle…standing on Church Point looking over the bay it always reminds me of a little Town on the Normandy coast… maybe it was a WW2 training ground? It’s a great place to spot Dolphins.

Please watch online: *A World of My Own: John Braine/ Yorkshire Film Archive.* Released online in 2020, this black and white documentary from half a century ago is a gem. Braine never wrote a dull book. He has a wonderful eye and refreshing honesty. A man of deep feeling who loved the North.
